What is a Plant Cell Wall?

A plant cell wall is a tough layer surrounding the cell that provide a number of functions:

Plant Cell Wall Model

  • strength to support the plant
  • fix cell shape
  • flexibility
  • porosity
  • water-proofing
  • barrier to pests
  • protection against environmental stress

Plant cell walls are a complex mixture of polysaccharides, proteins, lignins, inorganic compounds and water.

Primary cell walls are found in young growing tissue

  Primary cell wall      young barley

Secondary (thickened) cell walls are found in tissue that has stopped growing

Secondary cell wall      Maize stem environmental SEM      trees
