Naming Buildings, Rooms and Open Spaces Policy

Overview

Various buildings, rooms and open spaces around the University are named after major benefactors, distinguished former staff of the University or members of the community who have been associated with the University. This Policy sets out the principles and procedures for the naming of such areas.

Scope and Application

This Policy applies to all buildings, rooms and open spaces on the University's four campuses.

Policy Principle

1. Buildings, rooms, lecture theatres, seminar rooms and open spaces may be named eg after a person, organisation or concept.

Vice-Chancellor & President

Procedures

1. Any person associated with the University may submit to the Vice-Chancellor and President a request for the naming of a building, seminar room, lecture theatre, courtyard or part of the University grounds.

2. The Vice-Chancellor and President will, in accord with the Policy, consider the request.

3. If approval is not given, the proposer will be so advised.

4. Where a building, room or space is to be named after a person or organisation, further approval must be sought by the proposer from the person or organisation after whom the building, room or space is to be named, or if the person is deceased, from the person's family.

5. Only after the above approvals have been obtained may a public announcement be made by the Vice-Chancellor and President on behalf of the University.

6. Decisions on whether or not signage in the form of a plaque or memorial is appropriate; the appropriate siting or location if the proposal is deemed appropriate; and the appropriate type, size and materials for any proposed plaque or memorial shall be made with reference to policies for the time being in force on signage, visual identity and other relevant matters (see the Brand and Visual Identity Policy).
