Radiation Safety Policy & Guidelines (Unrevised)
Overview:
In South Australia ionising radiation activities are governed by legislation administered by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Radiation Protection Division, and the Federal Government authority National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The radiation policy deals with the control of the occupational exposures and radiation doses to radiation workers. Regulations set the annual effective dose limits for radiation workers at 20 mSv per year and, for the public 1mSv per year. The university has in place a combination of training, physical and engineering control measures, supervision, recording and auditing, under the supervision of the OH&S Unit, the University Radiation Safety Officer, and the Area Radiation Safety Officers (RSO), aim to meet the legislative requirements.
Whilst working with ionising radiation, the ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) principle must be used to ensure that exposures to workers and public are minimised while economic and other factors being taken into account.
