Lean Six SigmaThe Foundations of Business Excellence
NEW PROGRAMon this page "The Foundations of Business Excellence program introduces participants to concepts, tools and techniques that can be applied to private sector and public sector organisations with equal effectiveness." Six Sigma and Lean are the two pre-eminent business excellence and improvement methodologies currently used by leading organisations across a broad range of industries. Six Sigma is the comprehensive business improvement strategy made famous by organisations such as Motorola, General Electric, Honeywell and others, which has been used to generate significant improvements in business performance. Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and removing the causes of errors and variation in business and work processes. Lean is the embodiment of Toyota's Production System principles, which during the past decade has had an increasing impact on a range of organisations, both public and private, engaged in a variety of industries. Lean is an improvement practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. Both of these outstanding and globally proven methodologies will be covered in this program. Distinct Levels of QualificationBoth the Six Sigma and Lean methodologies are implemented in organisations by improvement leaders and team members qualified to the Yellow Belt (Advanced), Green Belt or Black Belt level. Yellow Belts and Green Belts identify and action improvement projects using team-based approaches. The University of Adelaide Executive Education Unit offers an integrated Six Sigma and Lean program in a modular format, with a bias towards non-manufacturing implementations. The modules have been designed to cater to participants from a wide variety of organisations and with varying needs regarding the implementation of formal improvement strategies. The program commences with the two-day Yellow Belt (Advanced) module, which is followed by two three-day Green Belt modules. The highest-qualification Black Belt module may also be taken after successful completion of the Green and will be made available in future, dependent on demand. Yellow Belt (Advanced)The Yellow Belt (Advanced) module forms the foundation for all others, introducing participants to the core concepts underpinning the Six Sigma and Lean approaches to business improvement. It is suitable for individuals or teams wishing to initiate and progress improvement projects in their area. Green BeltThe two Green Belt modules build on the foundation Yellow Belt (Advanced) module and introduce participants to a more advanced set of concepts, tools and techniques suitable for initiating and leading improvement efforts organisation-wide. Each level - Yellow Belt (Advanced), Green Belt and potentially the Black Belt - requires participants to undertake a workplace-based project to reinforce the learning in a practical context. Interactive LearningThe University of Adelaide Executive Education Lean Six Sigma programs are hands-on, stimulating learning experiences. Every program is highly interactive, with opportunities to advance your opinions and ideas. Participation is encouraged in a supportive environment. To ensure the concepts introduced during each program are understood, they will be reinforced through a mix of learning methods, including lecture-style presentation, open discussion, case studies, simulations and group work. Participants will be required to commence a team-based project showing the application of the Six Sigma techniques to their own workplace as part of each program to reinforce the practical application and workplace relevance of concepts, tools and techniques learned. Articulation optionsNot everyone will want or need to be a Green Belt. For many individuals and teams wishing to initiate and implement improvement projects, the Yellow Belt (Advanced) module may be all that's required. Those wanting more can commence with Yellow Belt (Advanced) and continue to the Green Belt modules. While those wishing to proceed to a highly advanced level of understanding may also consider going one step further to the Black Belt module (to be offered at a future date, demand dependent). Who should attend? The Lean Six Sigma program modules introduce participants to concepts, methodologies, tools and techniques by which business excellence is achieved and maintained. They are therefore suitable for anyone in any organisation - large or small, public sector or private sector, manufacturing, process or services - looking to make a difference through improvement. All modules challenge participants at a fundamental level to understand and manage their existing organisations as effectively and efficiently as possible given current constraints and equip them with the tools and methodologies to achieve increasingly better results.
