The modern business environment increasingly demands the use of teams, as few individuals are capable of knowing and doing it all.

It follows then that organisations are increasingly seeking and relying on people who can inspire and develop effective teams - big-picture thinkers who are able to bring out the best in large groups of people to shape the culture and lead change.

This new short course at the University of Adelaide will provide you with powerful tools to effectively work with a variety of different groups in your organisation. You will learn how to optimise team performance to foster relationships that achieve results.

This two-day Management Development Program will explore:

Team Leadership

  • Characteristics of effective teams
  • Team performance model
  • Shaping and developing the team

Organisational Leadership

  • Motivational tools and strategies
  • Understanding, influencing and shaping organisational culture
  • Leading effective change

If you are prepared to make a serious commitment to improving your skills and leadership ability, this course is for you.

Who should attend

This stand-alone course is designed for those in a people-management role. It also serves as a complementary course for those who have previously completed our Leading and Managing People (LMP) course, as it builds on the skills and knowledge already acquired. Where LMP focuses on leading individuals, this course focuses on the bigger picture of teams and organisational leadership.

Learning outcomes

Perhaps the biggest challenge for managers, professionals and team leaders is building leadership to drive growth. This requires an insight into others’ motivations, an understanding of the factors that influence culture and an appreciation of the dynamics of highly successful teams.

This practical course is designed to equip you with tools and techniques that you can use immediately to improve your personal leadership performance. Throughout, you will be exposed to workable ideas about what motivates people, how team relationships develop and how to create and sustain great teams.

You will learn how to identify organisational culture – “the way things are done around here” – and gain insights into how you can transform inflexible mindsets. A culture that focuses on results encourages better teamwork because people become committed to achieving shared objectives. As people learn to work in synergy, benefits flow to the whole organisation.

You will develop greater confidence in your ability to expertly drive change through your department, division or organisation.

The aims of this course are to help you:

  • Develop skills in creating and sustaining effective teams
  • Acquire a deep understanding of motivation and its place in developing organisations
  • Identify and shape organisational culture
  • Create a road map for change, and develop skills in working with people through change.

Interactive learning

The workshop will be practical, informal and participative, providing a rich, stimulating learning experience. You will experience fresh, innovative thinking, underpinned by intellectual rigour. The presenter's interactive teaching style uses a variety of methods to involve participants, including lecture input, diagnostic and self-assessment, group work and case studies.
