Full Semester Exchange

About the Full Semester Exchange

One of the options for studying overseas is the full semester exchange. This is a semester length program that allows you to complete a semester at an overseas institution, generally 6 months in length.

With over 150 exchange partners in more than 25 countries, you have a wide range of options to choose from. You can either select to undertake a program specific exchange or individual courses in your area of interest. Subject to approval from the Program Director, the courses will provide you with credits towards your degree at The University of Adelaide.

How does the Exchange Program work?

Read about the benefits of student exchange – The Good Uni Guide thinks it's a great idea!

You can also choose to study at a non-partner university as a Study Abroad student.

The Postgraduate Hub will guide you with your application to the exchange partner institution as well as contacting the exchange partner institution on your behalf. Speak with your Program Adviser or contact our International Executive Officer to discuss your plans of incorporating an exchange in your program of study.

Eligibility

Exchange programs are open to both domestic and international students studying onshore and offshore. International students, however, are not permitted to go on exchange at partner universities in their home country.

To apply for the exchange program, you must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • be a postgraduate coursework or research student
  • have completed at least 1 semester in your degree program by the time you depart for your exchange
  • have at least a Credit average overall (65%)

Accounting / Finance students: Whilst it is possible for Accounting and Finance students to participate in an exchange, the selection of exchange courses are more restricted due to strict degree requirements. Therefore it is recommended that students should complete all Accounting courses and Finance core courses at University of Adelaide and undertake Finance and non-Accounting elective units on exchange instead. Alternatively students may be able to participate in short-term overseas programs or study tours where equivalent full-time study load is not required.

Cost

The cost of undertaking an exchange overseas will vary widely across our range of partners. If there is a formal exchange agreement between the University and the exchange partner university, the student does not need to pay tuition fees at the exchange university. Tuition fees are waived by each exchange institution for incoming students. The student simply pays the standard full-time University of Adelaide tuition that he or she would normally pay.

If there is no formal exchange agreement between the University and the exchange partner university, students will need to pay tuition fees to the exchange partner university.

All other costs are the responsibility of the student. You will need to consider the following costs when preparing a budget:

  • Exchange university application fee
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Travel expenses
  • Passport and visa costs
  • Health and/or travel insurance
  • Any other incidental costs
  • Entertainment

Scholarships

Exchange Process

  1. Research your options and look at the courses available at the host university.
  2. Discuss your decision with your Program Adviser, as they need to approve your course selection.
  3. Once you are ready to apply, follow the steps below.

Applying for an Exchange

Students must complete two applications for Adelaide Abroad and for the host university. Students cannot apply to a host university until they have been accepted into the Adelaide Abroad Exchange program.

Adelaide Abroad Application

  1. Complete and submit the Adelaide Abroad Online Application Form with all the required documentation.
  2. Adelaide Abroad will notify you of the outcome of your application to the exchange program after application deadlines have closed. If you have been accepted, you will be sent an offer letter to your student email.
  3. Return the acceptance form attached to the offer letter and a nomination will be sent to the host university.

Adelaide Abroad Application form: Click here to complete the application form.

Study Plan Approval form: Use the Study Plan Approval form to obtain faculty approval for the studies you will be undertaking on exchange. This form should be returned to the Adelaide Abroad office once signed by the Postgraduate Hub. Click here for more information on how many courses you should take.

Academic Reference form: Some universities require academic references as part of their application process. You may be required to obtain an Academic Reference from a lecturer or tutor who knows you and your academic strengths.

The Host University Application

  1. Once you have returned the acceptance form to Adelaide Abroad, you will be sent application forms and instructions on how to apply to the host university.
  2. The host university will send a notification of acceptance or declination either directly or through the Adelaide Abroad office.

Preparing to go on Exchange

Plan your travel

  • Apply for your student visa
  • Book flights
  • Organise accommodation
  • Finalise any necessary insurance
    ...and prepare for take off!

Enrol for your exchange

If the host university is an exchange partner of the University of Adelaide, you are required to be enrolled in one of these exchange courses on Access Adelaide:

  • Business students - EXCHANGE 700XBUS
  • Economics students - EXCHANGE 700XECO

The 'X' indicates the different course catalogue number. Depending on your approved credits, you will need to enrol in the appropriate exchange course to indicate your equivalent study load overseas. Your course fees will be paid to the University of Adelaide whilst on exchange placement.

You will then need to enrol into the approved courses at your host university. Your host university will provide you with information on how to do this. You must undertake the equivalent of a minimum of 9 University of Adelaide units and up to a maximum of 12 University of Adelaide units at the host university.

Attend a pre-departure session at Adelaide Abroad

This provides you with important pre-departure information. The times and dates of the sessions will be advertised on the Adelaide Abroad website. Please also read the Pre-departure Guide for Accepted Students.

Returning from Exchange

Feedback

Once you have returned,  you will be sent an Adelaide Abroad evaluation survey. Complete and return the survey as soon as possible. The release of your academic transcript from the host university will be delayed until the survey has been returned.
