MBA Short Term Programs

About MBA Short Term Programs

The Adelaide Business School has strong exchange partnerships with some of the world's top ranking business schools, providing Adelaide MBA students the opportunity to study overseas in some of the most highly ranked MBA programs in the world. This opportunity also allows you to earn your business degree while immersing yourself in a different culture and learning a new language. Subject to approval from the MBA Program Director, the international study experience can count for credit towards your MBA at The University of Adelaide.

The MBA short term programs are conducted as intensive programs of study in the summer period (Jan-Feb) or winter period (June-July) and they vary from 2 to 6 weeks.

All programs are taught in English and are available to both Australian and international students.

MBA short term programs are also conducted at a non-partner university and student will be enrolled as a Study Abroad student.

The Postgraduate Hub will guide you with your application to the exchange partner institution as well as contacting the exchange partner institution on your behalf. Speak with your MBA Program Adviser or contact our International Executive Officer to discuss your plans of incorporating a short term program in your MBA.

Eligibility

The MBA short term programs are open to both domestic and international students studying onshore and offshore. International students, however, are not permitted to go on exchange at partner universities in their home country.

To apply for the MBA short term programs, you must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Enrolled in the MBA or MBA (Advanced) program
  • Successfully completed or will be finishing the following core courses of the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration prior to going on exchange:
    • Fundamentals of Leadership
    • Accounting for Managers
    • Marketing Management
    • Economics for Management
    • Managerial Finance
    • Managing Contemporary Organisations
  • Completed at least 18 units or 50% of the program prior to going on exchange
  • Have a strong academic record of at least a Credit average
  • Credits approved by School for proposed program of study.

Cost

The great thing about the MBA short term programs conducted at one of our exchange partner is that you don't need to pay tuition fees at the exchange university! Tuition fees are waived by each exchange institution for incoming students. You simply pay the standard full-time University of Adelaide tuition that you are paying already.

If the MBA short term program is at an institution with which the Adelaide Business School does not have an exchange agreement, you will be enrolling as a study abroad student and pay the tuition fees directly to the host institution.

All other costs while on exchange are your responsibility. You will need to consider the following costs when preparing a budget:

  • Exchange university application fee
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Travel expenses
  • Passport and visa costs
  • Health and/or travel insurance
  • Any other incidental costs
  • Entertainment

Costs will vary widely across our range of partners - as a very rough guide, you would need between AUD$1500-2000 per month. Cost of living information is available from our partner institutions.

The Host University Application

  1. Once you have returned the acceptance form to Adelaide Abroad, you will be sent application forms and instructions on how to apply to the host university.
  2. The host university will send a notification of acceptance or declination either directly or through the Adelaide Abroad office.

Attend an Information Session

TBC for 2013

At the sessions, you will learn about the European summer programs available, how the exchange can count as credits towards your Adelaide MBA, costs involved and available financial assistance as well as detailing the application process. Adelaide MBA students who returned from their 2011 and 2012 exchanges will be on hand to share their exchange adventures.

Applications for 2013 exchanges close on Friday, 2 November 2012. It is recommended that students attend an exchange information session before beginning the exchange application process.

Before and After You Travel

Plan Your Travel

Once you have been accepted, you can start planning for your travel:

  • Apply for your visa -
  • Book flights
  • Organise accommodation
  • Finalise any necessary insurance
    ...and prepare for take off!

Enrol for Your Exchange

If the host university is an exchange partner of the University of Adelaide, you are required to be enrolled in an exchange course on Access Adelaide:

  • EXCHANGE 700XBUS Exchange for Business PG Students (X units)

The 'X' indicates the different course catalogue number. Depending on your approved credits, you will need to enrol in the appropriate exchange course to indicate your equivalent study load overseas. Your course fees will be paid to the University of Adelaide whilst on exchange placement.

You will then need to enrol into the approved courses at your host university. Your host university will provide you with information on how to do this. You must undertake the equivalent of a minimum of 3 University of Adelaide units and up to a maximum of 6 University of Adelaide units at the host university for short term programs.

Pre-Departure Briefing

MBA students are required to attend a pre-departure briefing session that will be held by Postgraduate Hub and Adelaide Abroad. This is your opportunity to ask detailed questions, meet other students going on the MBA short term programs, and gain a clearer understanding of what you need to do to be fully prepared for your exchange.

The briefing is usually held approximately one month before the end of Trimester 1.

2014 MBA Exchange Opportunities

The 2014 study opportunities will be similar in format to those offered in 2013. We will continue to provide students with the opportunity to study in Montreal, Germany, Finland, Denmark and France. As a general rule-of-thumb MBA students should plan to study overseas during Trimester 2. The European Summer programs run during June and July. Programs range in duration from 2 weeks to 6 weeks. As a guide students should anticipate getting credit transfer for Global Business and an elective, although programs do vary and courses must match the program offered. Students are unable to take 2 courses that overlap more than 50% in content towards the same degree, so this may be an inhibitor.

We release program details to students as soon as we receive them. If you would like to express interest in study overseas towards your MBA, please contact the MBA Program Adviser, Sarah May, to map out your study plan. Courses in Finland, if they match, may be taken throughout the year and are not solely offered in the summer program.
