Guidelines for Drop-in Sessions
Drop-in sessions with Learning Advisors help you develop the following:
- Study skills: referencing, avoiding plagiarism, note-taking skills, reading skills, time-management.
- Writing skills: structuring and linking ideas, summarising, paraphrasing, integrating sources, academic style.
- Assessment tasks: essays, reports, case studies, literature reviews, oral presentations.
Drop-in sessions are approximately 15 minutes in length.

- Learning Advisors cannot help you with:
1. Where are the drop-in sessions held?
- Drop-in sessions are usually held at the Learning Advisor’s office in the First Year Learning Centre.
- The Learning Advisor’s office is located at the far end of the First Year Learning Centre, next to the suite of computers.
Print out a hard copy of your draft and identify the main concern(s) where you need advice.
- Drop by the First Year Learning Centre.
- At busy times, you will need to sign-up on the sheet on the door, otherwise go in.
3. How can you benefit from these sessions?
- Identify the main concern(s) for which you would like advice (Learning Advisors cannot cover everything in 15 minutes).
- Be prepared to actively take part in the session.
- Make sure you have edited your work as the Learning Advisor's role is not edit or proof-read your draft.
4. Learning Advisors cannot help you with:
- the content of your task (see a Study Coach assistance with underlying concepts).
- take-home exams.
- preparation for IELTS.
