How does the Internship work for my Organisation?
You submit a one page Internship Outline that includes information about your organisation and the type of work the Intern can expect to do.
Placements differ according to industry and organisation, with some interns working solely on projects and others also learning about and assisting with the day to day activities of the organisation. Placements to date have included:
- Financial Services
- Agriculture and Trade Policy
- Work in Regional Economics
- Education
- Business Strategy
- Marketing Strategy and Market Analysis
- Human Resource Management
- Organisational Development
- International Business
An intern would usually undertake a general mix of tasks as follows:
- Project work – 50% (includes the research and writing of a research report of use to the organisation)
- Observation / Client work – 40% (includes attending office meetings, board meetings, client meetings with supervisor, shadowing supervisor, researching clients, follow-up work and support work for placement supervisor)
- Clerical work – 10% (includes administrative duties, filing, reception)
Please note: these breakdowns are flexible and work negotiated will depend on your industry and your organisation. The most important thing is that the student Intern is able to obtain a real working experience, and that the project or tasks they undertake are of benefit to your organisation.
Once the Internships Team have received your expression of interest the process that generally follows includes:
- Liaising with you as you prepare a job description in order for us to advertise your opportunity to internship students.
- Students then indicate their interest in the internship and generally apply directly to the Internships Team.
Note: Students can register for the Internships Program at anytime; they do not have to wait until a specific opportunity is advertised. Students that register are invited for a brief interview to identify what they are looking for in regards to the internship placement and to determine their suitability for the Internship Program. If they meet the criteria they are added to our database to be notified when opportunities become available.
- Your internship opportunity will be advertised to all relevant students, not just those that have already been shortlisted for the Internships Program. The Internships Team will assess applications and conduct a brief shortlisting interview for those students not already on our database.
- Applications that specifically meet the criteria of your opportunity will be forwarded to you for review.
- You can then arrange to formally interview applicants directly otherwise the Internships Team can conduct interviews on your behalf, or together with you (you can be involved as little or as much as you would like).
- Once final candidate/s are selected the internship commences, (we assist with induction preparation, guidelines, insurance etc, and then monitor the students throughout the process).
