Prospective Internship Students

At the University of Adelaide, your future is our business. As a result, the Faculty of the Professions has developed an Internship Program for postgraduate students undertaking coursework masters degrees in Business and Economics. These Internships provide you with a great opportunity to gain practical experience and build skills, knowledge and contacts in your chosen field, starting you on your career path.

What is an internship?

It is a short term work placement where you spend time working in an organisation for a minimum of 12 days, usually averaging 1 or 2 days per week over a semester or trimester. There are also some intensive internships available over the summer and mid-semester break, where you would work 4 or 5 days per week over 3 or 4 weeks. The nature and type of work you undertake will differ for every placement and may consist of a small amount of clerical work, shadowing and observation of supervisors, client work and independent work on a project of benefit to your organisation. More information on previous internships will be available on this website soon.

Am I eligible?

You must be enrolled as a student at the University of Adelaide for the duration of the intended internship, in one of the following postgraduate coursework masters degree programs:

  • Master of Applied Economics (International)
  • Master of Economics
  • Master of Economics (Public Policy)
  • Master of Commerce (Accounting)
  • Master of Commerce (Applied Finance)
  • Master of Commerce (Marketing)
  • Master of Commerce (Performance Management)
  • Master of Accounting & Finance
  • Master of Finance & Business Economics
  • Master of Business Administration
  • Master of Accounting and Performance Management
  • Master of Accounting and Marketing

Students who have graduated, or who will graduate during the term of the Internship, cannot be considered.

You must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for the Internship Program:

  • You must have a credit average in your current degree program.
  • You must be able to commit a minimum of one day per week for the 12 week duration of the program. Or the equivalent of a minimum 12 days in your Internship.
  • If you are undertaking a program (except for the MBA Program) through the Business School and you are an International Student, you must have completed and passed the following elective: COMMERCE 7041: Business Communications (M)
  • You must be available for interviews and a half day training seminar.
  • It is recommended that an Internship be undertaken in your last or second to last semester or trimester of study (MBA students are exempt from this requirement).
  • If you gained credit for your undergraduate degree and thus are only undertaking a one year masters degree you are still eligible for the Internship Program, but you will need to send through your undergraduate transcript and the credit average will be taken from this.

Additional Information:

  • These Internships are unpaid.
  • The Program is voluntary and will not receive course credit at this stage.
  • If you are an International Student, at this stage, the Internship Program will be included in your 20 hours of working time per week. This means you must ensure that by participating in the Internship Program you are not breaching your visa requirements.
