Program Outline

The University of Adelaide’s Bachelor of Media is an innovative program which combines the university’s strong research culture with a theoretical and practical focus on the latest developments in digital and participatory media. The course offers multiple and flexible options in combination with core studies in media. Students will be prepared for new forms of writing and cross-media work in mainstream media, business and government organisations, as well as autonomous media work. Students are asked to think of themselves as critical consumers of media product, and innovative, ethical and creative makers for a range of media. They are encouraged to develop a global perspective and to take advantage of Adelaide’s international networks for study abroad. The program has strong links to industry and to the local community. The media placement opportunities and personalised study options it offers to senior students are diverse. It will suit adaptive, resourceful and committed students who want to prepare for the new fields and occupations created by digitisation and networking changes affecting mainstream media, and society more generally.

In first year, students take core courses on the impact of new digital technologies on industry and participatory user practices, a study of photographic and filmic images, broadcast radio and television, and story/technology. All these courses include optional practical elements. The advanced level core studies include media law, media research, global media, online democracy, democracies, professional practices, media and creative theory, and a range of options including a media industry placement. Production electives include Radio Production taught by Radio Adelaide. In a studio-based environment, Multimedia Production incorporates web graphics, virtual worlds, interactive media, and DVD production. Video Production includes industry-standard documentation reporting, scripts and real-world project scenarios. Journalistic and other forms of writing are also offered. In a dedicated final year core course, students are prepared for professional career pathways, or for further study.
