Program Outline

The Masters award is open to students who are graduates of health-related disciplines or who have relevant experience. Students may build on a certificate to achieve a diploma, and on a diploma to achieve a master's degree.

The program aims to stimulate students to think creatively about the the social, cultural, economic and environmental determinants of health and illness in populations and about the organisation and delivery of public health services, including policies and practices that support and improve the health of people.

The program consists of course work, comprising core courses and electives, and may include a dissertation on a research project or a practicum. While students are free to choose any combination of electives, and to make their award as general as they wish, they may choose to focus on a particular area of public health.

Our awards are well recognised by the South Australian Department of Health, the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, as well as the Public Health Association of Australia, the Faculty of Public Health Medicine and other relevant public health bodies.

Areas of Specialisation

Opportunity exists for some specialisation in occupational health and safety, public health policy, health promotion, environmental health, qualitative research, epidemiology or biostatistics.

Occupational Health and Safety

The Discipline of Public Health also runs a joint postgraduate Occupational Health and Safety Management program with the University of South Australia. The graduate certificate, diploma and masters degrees have been specifically developed for those seeking a career in OHS, particularly as a manager or consultant. Core and elective courses enable participants to acquire the skills and knowledge to design, implement and evaluate OHS systems and interventions. The program is recognised by OHS professional bodies including the Safety Institute of Australia and the Australasian Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

Biostatistics

The Discipline of Public Health in collaboration with the Discipline of Statistics at the University of Adelaide offers high quality postgraduate coursework awards in Biostatistics through the Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia. [read more]

Electives
All candidates shall complete 18 units selected from the following elective courses: Dental Public Health (3 units) Occupational Hygiene and Ergonomics (3 units) Public Health Practicum (6 units) Biostatistics (3 units) Diseases of Occupation (3 units) Epidemiological Research Methods (3 units) Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases (3 units) Public Health Ethics (3 units) Industrial Toxicology (3 units) Introduction to Environmental and Occupational Health (3 units) Public Health Law (3 units) Public Health Studies (3 units) Health Technology Assessment (3 units) Or, other courses offered by this University or other universities which the Faculty approves for presentation in lieu of elective courses listed above to the value of 6 units.
Dissertation
Candidates may complete a research dissertation in lieu of 12 elective units.
