Program Structure

The double degree provides students with the opportunity to pursue education courses from the beginning of their university studies. The primary focus in the first three years is on undertaking study in the two discipline areas in which the student intends to teach. This study generally includes courses taken at Levels 1, 2 and 3 of the degree program. These courses are taken as part of the degree program that accompanies the Bachelor of Teaching in the subject areas of the student's choice.

In each of the first three years, students also take an education course designed to provide an on-going orientation to educational issues and practice. The first and third year education courses involve observation and experience in school contexts. The final year is taken up entirely with education studies and is commenced after the other degree is completed. This year is organised around two five-week periods of teaching practice in secondary schools, one in the Adelaide metropolitan area, the other in country South Australia.

The Bachelor of Teaching is designed primarily for students who have not already commenced university study. Students who have commenced a degree should consider completing their degree and then applying for the Graduate Diploma of Education.

Selection Criteria ?

Year 12 applicants
You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You compete for a place with your Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER).
Alternative entry pathways
  • Higher Education applicants
    You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent university study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA.
  • Special Entry applicants
    You must meet the following criteria: you must be 21 years or over on January 1st of the year that you will be studying*, you must not hold a completed higher education level award, and if you have been enrolled in a course leading to a higher education level award in the last 3 years, you must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study. If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. Personal Competencies (PC) and Employment Experience (EE) statements are not considered. *The age restriction is 19 years or over if you have completed either the Flinders Foundation course or the UniSA Foundation Studies program or the UniSA Program for Adult Learners. Indigenous applicants may be eligible for entry through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Scheme. See Wilto Yerlo for further information.

Additional Entry Requirements ?
A successful National Criminal History Record Check (NCHRC) is required by teacher-employment authorities in South Australia. A successful NCHRC is required prior to undertaking any professional experience/practicum placements which involve contact with minors (under 18 years of age). These placements form a compulsory part of the program.
