Program Outline

The creative writing programs aim to develop a writer's skill by providing:
 

• opportunities to work with qualified staff, mentors and fellow writers over an extended period in order to develop writing skills
• opportunities to explore individual approaches to writing and creativity in a supportive, structured environment
• practical experience through the sharing of writing exercises in workshops, as well as skills in research, revision, development of material and critical understanding
• an opportunity to contribute to professionally published anthologies of writing and to experience the benefits of commercial publication. Writers will gain knowledge of the processes involved in editing and publication, as well as distribution, promotion and dissemination
• development of an understanding of the changing possibilities for creative writing in Australia and internationally, from an author's point of view
• encouragement of artistic confidence and independence.

The programs are structured around weekly on campus seminars and individual consultations on work in progress.

Students who choose to leave with a Graduate Certificate may re-apply later to re-enter the Graduate Diploma or Masters program in order to complete a higher qualification.

Information on part-time study is available from the English Discipline office, but students need to be aware that there is no mid-year intake.

The Graduate Certificate is comprised of two courses: Writing Process (a workshop which explores writing process from concept to discovery draft, to revision and editing) and Thinking Aloud (a seminar, taught by a team of the discipline's writers and literary critics, which explores issues and themes in contemporary literature).

Students who choose to leave with a Graduate Certificate may re-apply later to re-enter the Graduate Diploma or Masters program in order to complete a higher qualification.

Selection Criteria

Graduate entry only.

You must have a completed Bachelor's degree or equivalent and submit a portfolio to the Discipline.

Additional Entry Requirements

Submission of a good portfolio of creative writing to the Discipline of English (Napier Building, North Terrace) at the time of application. Details of requirements for the portfolio can be obtained from the English Discipline.
