This program commences the development of advanced levels of expertise in pedagogy (learning, teaching and related processes) and performance while developing a thorough understanding of their relationship. It forms the first year of the two-year Master of Music (Performance and Pedagogy) sequence.
The program provides 12 units of performance courses and 12 units of pedagogy courses. Two minor recitals, with pedagogy related themes, are undertaken as the result of thirty hours of individual tuition. Pedagogy courses are taught in seminars and workshops with off-campus teaching practice in selected schools and colleges.
Core courses: Pedagogy Seminar IV (6 units), Pedagogy Practicum IV (6 units), Minor Recital IV (6 units), Negotiated Project IV (6 units).
In special cases the Director may approve different but equivalent sets of exercises.

Graduates commence dual careers as performers in one or more specialist branches such as solo performance, chamber music or orchestral playing and secondly as teachers able to function successfully in a variety of settings and circumstances. Subject to local registration or accreditation requirements, graduates may consider primary or secondary level teaching in the private studio, the school and college campus, as well as various teaching modes such as individual, or small-group.
