Program Outline

The creative writing programs aim to develop a writer's skill by providing:
 

  • opportunities to work with qualified staff, mentors and fellow writers over an extended period in order to develop writing skills
  • opportunities to explore individual approaches to writing and creativity in a supportive, structured environment
  • practical experience through the sharing of writing exercises in workshops, as well as skills in research, revision, development of material and critical understanding
  • opportunities to contribute to professional journals and other publications. Writers will gain knowledge of the processes involved in editing and publication, as well as distribution, promotion and dissemination
  • development of an understanding of the changing possibilities for creative writing in Australia and internationally, from an author's point of view
  • encouragement of artistic confidence and independence.

Program Structure

Students may enrol directly into the Graduate Diploma if they only wish to undertake one year of full-time study and may qualify for a Graduate Certificate after successfully completing the first semester's required courses.

The coursework program is structured around weekly on campus seminars and individual consultations on work in progress. Information on part-time study is available from the English Discipline office.

Graduate entry only.
You must have a completed Bachelor's degree or equivalent and submit a portfolio to the Discipline; or, you must have a completed Graduate Diploma in Creative Writing with at least a distinction average.
Additional Entry Requirements ?
Submission of an excellent portfolio of creative writing to the Discipline of English (Napier Building, North Terrace) at the time of application. Details of requirements for the portfolio can be obtained from the English Discipline.
