Program Outline

The Master of Commerce (Accounting) is designed to offer knowledge and skills in accounting and related fields. It enables candidates possessing undergraduate degrees in non-accounting disciplines to move into careers in accounting, auditing, taxation, financial management and business advisory services in public practice, industry or government.

For candidates with a recognised degree in accounting, advanced level courses are offered within this specialisation to provide greater depth in the study of accounting and add perspectives in knowledge management, public sector management, financial management or research.

Program Structure

Students complete core courses which include four foundation courses and seven accounting courses. The remaining course will be chosen from a number of electives, depending on the student's main specialisation.

Foundation courses (12 units)
Accounting courses (21 units)

*All of the above accounting courses must be undertaken to meet ICAA requirements. Courses marked with an asterisk may be replaced with one accounting elective and one non-accounting elective if students wish to meet CPA Australia requirements only. Read more below about Professional Accreditation.

*Unless exempted, all international students are required to undertake COMMERCE 7041: Business Communications (M) which will be presented in lieu of an elective.  

Advanced Level Accounting Courses

Candidates who have a recognised accounting degree will choose from the courses listed below. This arrangement will apply to candidates who have previously graduated with an accredited accounting degree from an Australian University and has gained CPA Associate Membership. Eligible graduates may be able to complete the Master of Commerce (Accounting) in one year.

Professional Accreditation

The Master of Commerce (Accounting) satisfies the academic requirements for associate membership to the CPA program of CPA Australia. In addition, graduates would also fulfil the associate membership requirements of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia by including appropriate courses.
