Location: North Terrace Campus
Duration: 6 years (full-time or part-time? equivalent)

Program Outline

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree is globally accepted as the degree which provides most flexibility for students, while equipping them with the skills base essential for many careers. The choice of courses available in the BA is extensive, and this is reflected in the list of possible majors. We aim to accommodate students with both specific study interests and career plans and also those who want to sample new disciplines and explore associated employment opportunities. Students have complete control throughout their degree, with expert guidance on appropriate course selection available at all times.

Music programs provide the intensive professional training required for employment in the music industry. They seek to provide a challenging and stimulating learning environment in which all students may achieve their full potential. They develop educated, flexible and imaginative graduates who possess the knowledge and skills required to function effectively in a wide range of professional contexts.

The Bachelor of Music Education combines a study of music with a major study in music teaching.  Graduates are able to apply for registration as a secondary school teacher in South Australia.

The combined degree Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Music Education comprises completion of the Bachelor of Music Education (96 units) plus selected Level I, II and III Arts courses (52 units) to finalise the Bachelor of Arts program. It enables students to pursue a broad range of interests in music and the arts in a self-designed, integrated academic program. The study of foreign languages is of particular significance to vocalists and musicologists, while history or anthropology may be of particular interest to an ethnomusicologist. Various media studies may also be of interest to Composition and Music Technology majors.

Program Structure

This program involves 144 units of study, normally taken full time over six years. First year studies focus on music courses, specialising in classical or jazz performance or composition or music technology.  The remaining five years combine courses from the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Music Education programs

Experience is also gained in music education which eventually results in formal recognition for teacher registration. Students undertake three periods of teaching practice in the latter years, with an introductory 30 day practicum and two five-week periods, one in the country and one in metropolitan Adelaide. The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Music Education is recognised and accepted by the Teachers Registration Board in South Australia, interstate and some overseas countries. Graduates from this program do not need to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Education.

Alternative entry pathways

You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent higher education study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You must also undertake an audition/interview including an aural/theory test. You compete for a place based on your audition score. Your best GPA is used in the case of a tie-breaker. This program may not be deferred.

  • Without formal qualifications?
You may be eligible for our special access schemes.
Additional Entry Requirements ?
Applicants must attend and pass an audition/interview and an aural/theory test. Selections for music programs are made on the basis of audition/interview scores combined with academic achievement and the aural/theory test score. It is possible to audition for more than one instrument or area of specialisation if you have multiple interests and could pursue studies in any one of them. Separate audition application forms are required in that case. The auditions/interviews will be held from Monday 7 to Friday 11 December 2009. The audition application form and full details are available on the web: www.music.adelaide.edu.au/students/prospective/auditions/ Application forms for the December round must be returned to the Elder Conservatorium of Music by 30 September 2009. Late applications will be accepted however, while every effort will be made, it may not be possible to accommodate them in the audition schedule. For those applicants who are unable to attend in December, a small number of auditions/interviews will be held in the week beginning 28 September 2009. In this case, the audition application form must be returned to the Conservatorium no later than Friday 11 September 2009 with an explanation about the problem. A late round of auditions/interviews is highly likely to be held in February 2010, subject to final numbers in the January offer round. Please note that not all specialisations will be available at this time. Auditions for Jazz specialisations are particularly unlikely to be held after the December round. Enquiries should be directed to the Conservatorium either through the web (www.music.adelaide.edu.au), phone (08 8303 5995) or email (music@adelaide.edu.au).
