Agriculture is one of Australia’s leading export sectors with four out of five agribusiness jobs dependent on foreign trade. This program aims to educate future decision makers in global agricultural markets and provides both the general and specialist skills necessary to succeed. The program contains core studies in accounting, agricultural business, economics, finance, law, and marketing. Considerable choice is available in the areas of economics and agribusiness studied at second and third year, including Australian and international agribusiness, and development and international economics.

Students use computer software to explore how some of the country’s most important corporations manage, distribute and market primary and processed farm products including wine, seafood, horticultural goods, grains and livestock products.  Courses in humanities, social sciences, science, mathematical and computer science and commerce may also be included in the degree program.

Program Structure

This program contains core studies in economics, finance, accounting, law, agricultural business and marketing. Considerable choice is available in the area of economics and agribusiness to be studied in second and third years, including Australian agribusiness, development economics, environmental economics, international agribusiness and international economics. Students learn how to use computer software to explore how some of the country's most important corporations manage, distribute and market primary and processed farm products including wine, fish, seafood and horticultural goods in addition to grains and livestock products. Courses from arts, science, maths, computer science and commerce may also be included in the student's degree program.

Selection Criteria ?

Year 12 applicants
You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You compete for a place with your Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER).
Alternative entry pathways
  • Higher Education applicants
    You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent university study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA.
  • VET applicants
    You must have completed an AQF Diploma or above. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award.
  • Special Entry applicants
    You must be 18 years or over on February 1st of the year that you will be studying, you must not have studied more than 2 years full-time equivalent higher education in the last 2 years and you must not hold a completed higher education level award. If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. Personal Competencies (PC) and Employment Experience (EE) statements are not considered. Indigenous applicants may be eligible for entry through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Scheme. See Wilto Yerlo for further information.

Applicants who wish to be considered for entry on the basis of a completed VET/TAFE Diploma/Advanced Diploma (or overseas equivalent) must submit an official academic transcript and evidence of completion of the VET/TAFE course to the Business School, 10 Pulteney Street, Adelaide SA 5000. Official transcripts for completed VET/TAFE Diploma/Advanced Diploma must be received by the School no later than the first week of January, 2009. Plus two Level 1 electives

Level II

(PLEASE NOTE: Course codes below are only applicable from 2009)   

Plus four Level II Electives from the Economics courses or from other disciplines within the University.

  • AGRIBUS 3010WT: International Agribusiness Environment III
  • An additional 9 units of Level III Economics courses, with at least another 12 units of Level III courses
or
  • An additional 15 units of Level III Economics with the remaining courses at Level II or higher.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be employed in the private business sector within merchant banks, food and wine exporting companies, and the like. Employment opportunities also exist in the public sector such as in departments of trade, agriculture and environment. Other jobs include international trade analysts, natural resource managers, agricultural economists, finance managers and marketing consultants.
