Program Outline

Please note: In 2010 this program will only be on offer to current Bachelor of Science (Viticulture) students.

Internationally recognised for its wine related programs, the University of Adelaide is offering a Bachelor of Science (Viticulture) which will provide graduates with the scientific knowledge and practical skills to gain employment as viticultural scientists. Students wishing to focus on winemaking will be able to transfer to the Bachelor of Oenology degree at the end of their second year. The wine industries are significant contributors to the Australian economy and demand for viticultural science and oenology graduates is high. Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities available at the Waite campus and at the National Wine Centre, and from the work experience opportunities within the wine industry.

Program Structure

The first year level teaches the basic sciences and the foundations of wine science at the North Terrace campus and the National Wine Centre. In second year level the emphasis is on the scientific and technological aspects of winemaking and viticulture, with courses taught in the winery at the Waite Campus. Students wishing to complete the B.Sc. (Viticulture) undertake a third year level majoring in advanced viticulture technology and management practices, which includes ten weeks experience in the viticulture industry. Students wishing to major in oenology apply to enter the B. Oenology at the end of the second year level. This program requires a further two year levels of study on all aspects of wine production, including ten weeks of practical experience in the wine industry during a vintage period. Options to undertake a research honours program is also available.

Student Profile

Corrina’s winemarketing degree helped turn her family’s 6 generation tradition of grape growing into their own wine brand.

Corrina Rayment

Six generations of Corrina Rayments's family have worked the same property in McLaren Vale, so you could say that wine and grapes have always been a part of her life.

But now Corrina has used the skills she learned during her wine making degree at the University of Adelaide to turn her family's vineyard in McLaren Vale into their own wine label.

"Now we don't just grow grapes for other wineries, but we make them into our own wine brand as well".
