Program Outline

No new admissions into this program.

The focus of this program is 'active environmental management': mitigation, recovery, restoration and conservation. Students will develop a sound scientific knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge in a practical way to natural resource management. Students will be given the opportunity to develop skills in resource survey and assessment, integrated resource planning and monitoring, and landscape restoration.

This program will provide an understanding of the social, political and economic context of natural resource management and the skills needed for work with the community. Students will have the opportunity to specialise in areas such as soil and water, biodiversity and ecology, spatial information systems and pest management.

The first year of this program includes studies in a broad range of basic sciences, including biology, chemistry, physics and geology.

Second year develops this foundation by providing more in-depth study in areas including soil and water resources, ecology, environmental and regional planning and spatial information.

In third year, students will examine in depth specific issues in Natural Resource Management and will be able to choose between a wide variety of electives in the following areas: soil and water management; pest, animal and plant management; spatial information and research methodology; and biodiversity and ecology.

An additional year of study is available for those wishing to obtain an Honours degree.
