This program offers students knowledge and skills in the application of modern information technology within business. There is a growing need in industry for professionals who have skills in information technology together with a sound business background. The degree is designed to prepare students for a career in the development, implementation and management of business information systems. It builds skills in computer programming, business problem analysis, application design and development and implementation of IT solutions to business problems. Communication and decision-making skills are developed throughout the program.  

Students complete a sequence of studies in information technology and electronic commerce as well as a range of business courses. The first year of the degree provides the foundation necessary for a career in business information technology and includes core courses in accounting, economics, statistics and computer science. In the second and third years students will undertake studies in electronic commerce, computer systems, software engineering, networks and data communications.

Program Structure

The first year comprises core courses in computer science, information systems, economics, accounting and statistics. Approximately half the courses in later years are compulsory, including studies in programming, databases, systems analysis, software engineering and electronic commerce. The elective courses for second and third years may be chosen from the schools of Commerce and Computer Science, including marketing, management, finance, computer architecture, operating systems, networks and artificial intelligence.
