Emergency Lighting

Back to Building Fire Safety Features

In accordance with Division 2.6 Emergency Facilities and Procedures (OHSW Regulations), a workplace must provide for the safe and rapid evacuation persons in the event of an emergency.

If the failure of an artificial lighting system could cause a risk to the safety of persons at work, a suitable emergency lighting system must be provided and maintained.

Emergency lighting must be installed:

  • in every fire-isolated stairway
  • in every fire-isolated passageway
  • on every storey of a building where the storey has a floor area more than 300m2  including in every passageway, corridor, hallway that is part of the path of travel to an exit
  • in any room having a floor area more than 100m2 that does not open to a corridor or space that has emergency lighting
  • in any room having a floor area more than 300m2

Exit signs will also provide sufficient lighting during an emergency, and illuminate the safe route to exit the building.

Should the power fail, emergency lighting (including exit signs) will operate on battery power for a period of 90 minutes.
