Persons With a Disability

In accordance with AS 3745 (Emergency control organization and procedures for buildings, structures and workplaces), persons with disabilities are those having physical, intellectual, visual or auditory disabilities or impairments, either temporary or permanent.

It is important to ensure strategies for helping persons with disability are discussed with the individuals concerned to minimise the risk.

Evacuation Exercises

On commencement at the University, please ensure your Manager and your Warden are informed if you have any disability which may affect your ability to hear an alarm or evacuate. Strategies in the event of an emergency will then be discussed with you.

In the event of an Emergency

If you have a disability, or are aware of someone with a disability
Please report, or report with them to the Floor/Area Warden.
ie ensure someone is aware if you require assistance.

The Warden will remain with you, in a safe place until the arrival of the Emergency Services or until given the “All Clear”.

Evacuation

If evacuation is required, and you are ambulant (ie able to walk unaided), however have a minor injury/disability affecting your mobility, wait until the floor/area has been evacuated. You may be placed at risk if you try to evacuate via the stairs when there are a large number of people.

Note : Do not use the lifts, unless under the direction of the Emergency Services.

If you are unable to use the stairs, inform/report to the Warden and they will provide instructions.
Where evacuation of the area/building is required, this should be managed by the emergency services.

Remember, if you are not at immediate risk, it may be safer to remain where you are.

For a fire emergency and you are on the fire affected floor, move away from the fire and wait in a safe place (eg fire isolated stairwell) for the Fire Service. Ensure someone is aware of your location.
