Lower Level Campus Development

The University of Adelaide is known for its number of significant buildings, many associated with benefactors. Expansion in the middle of last century resulted in many new buildings being built with limited public funding and therefore lacked merit. The space between these structures was poorly considered. The task was to create more pleasant open spaces.

A building was demolished to open up the view to the main façade of the Barr Smith Library with flanking buildings.

The University of Adelaide engaged Hassell, MGT Architects and Hardy Milazzo to:
  • mask the old engineering building from the vista
  • respond to the awkward geometry of the Union Hall
  • bend the new building and control the elevations
  • refrain from populating the ground plane
  • underscore the library with a freestanding wall.

The success of the design was recognised by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (SA Chapter), who bestowed the 2006 Award of Merit in the Urban Design category.
