Refurbish Lower Napier

Back to completed projects

The Napier building contains a high concentration of the University's available common teaching spaces. They were upgraded through a $7.0m redevelopment project completed in March 2006. The project was managed by GHD, an international project consultancy company.

Lecture Theatres and Tutorial Rooms

The refurbishment of the lecture theatres listed below included new finishes, seating and state of the art audiovisual equipment.

  • Lower Ground: LG23, LG24, LG28 and LG29
  • Ground Floor: G03 and G04
  • 1st Floor: 102 (also video conferencing facilities)
  • 2nd Floor: 208 and 209

The tutorial rooms on the lower ground floor were refurbished including the installation of air conditioning, lighting, ceilings and audio visual equipment. Some of the existing rooms were enlarged so that they can offer increased flexibility for teaching class sizes between 15 and 35 people.

Improved amenity

The project addressed a number of Equity of Access and OHS issues. The foyers to both the lower ground and first floor have been greatly improved with the removal of internal stairs on the lower level and the extension of the main ground floor entrance to the west.

The project incorporated modifications and features that increased the amenity of the facilities:

  • The western entrance to the lower ground floor now has new automatic sliding doors to create an airlock.
  • The existing toilets on the lower ground, ground and 1st floor were refurbished.
  • The security of the facilities was increased by the installation of an access control system.
  • State-of-the-art audiovisual equipment was installed, with electronic controls to the lighting, data projectors, motorised screens and DVD players, while the newly-installed lighting takes advantage of the latest energy-efficient technology.

This upgrade will increase the flexibility of use of the spaces, particularly on the lower ground floor, so that they can be utilised by other users outside teaching periods e.g. conferences and seminars by external organisations.
