North Terrace Redesign

Back to completed projects

The University of Adelaide completed a significant upgrade of the North Terrace frontage in April 2005. It complements the Adelaide City Council-funded North Terrace Redevelopment.

The design by Taylor Cullity Lethlean landscape architects implemented significant principles recommended in the University's North Terrace Campus Development Strategy 2002. It reinforces the values and visions of the University and creates a pedestrian friendly environment.

As a result this important Adelaide space and the University's front door was greatly enhanced in the following ways:

Safety

Safety was improved with existing roadways converted to shared pathways. More lighting and low understorey landscaping enhances safety and security.

Pedestrian friendly

The redevelopment provided two strong north-south pedestrian links that connect with the University's hub (Hughes Plaza) and lower campus. The pathway, along the east side of the Elder Hall, links to the external lift located on the eastern side of the Plaza building.

Character

The design formalised the forecourts and carefully considered the value and character of the three heritage buildings (Mitchell, Bonython Hall and Elder Hall). The paving materials and the various forms of street furniture complement the neutral colours and textures of the buildings and enhance their ceremonial character.

The Elder statue was refurbished and relocated to realign with the centre of the Elder Conservatorium. At the foreground of the Bonython Hall, a section of paving was etched with the University's logo 'sub cruce lumen' and the Southern Cross depicted with LED lighting. A Reconciliation monument was commissioned and located in the garden east of Mitchell building. The Hughes monument was significantly enhanced by partial removal of the North Terrace fence.

A green environment

Goodman Crescent was replanted with a new lawn and flanked by Jacarandas. All landmark trees remained and greenery was significantly increased in the area.

While any visitor can attest to the success of the final design, the awarding of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects’ (SA Chapter) 2006 Adelaide Prize to the North Terrace Development is a fitting tribute to all who were involved in this major project.
