Psychology I is made up of two 3-unit courses, PSYCHOL 1000 Psychology IA (Semester 1) and PSYCHOL 1001 Psychology IB (Semester 2). These courses are available as single courses, or as part of a sequence in Psychology. They may be taken separately, and Psychology IA is not a prerequisite for Psychology IB. However, BOTH courses must be passed if you wish to proceed to Second Year Psychology

On successful completion of Psychology I, students will have:

  • an introductory knowledge of selected areas of basic psychological enquiry
  • an elementary understanding about how Psychology is applied to real-life problems
  • an ability to discuss and enter into debate on psychological topics
  • basic review skills in critically evaluating knowledge claims regarding psychological theory and in formulating research questions on the basis of that review
  • an elementary understanding of research methods in the discipline of Psychology
  • elementary skills in the quantitative analysis and interpretation of psychological data
  • an introductory knowledge about conventions for presenting in a structured way written reports and essays that cover topics introduced within the program.
