Role of the Pro Vice Chancellor (International)

The role of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) is to provide strategic direction for the University of Adelaide in its internationalisation. In pursuing this, the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) provides leadership and vision in achieving the university's strategic goals, particularly in relation to international policy across the University.

Key responsibilities include:

  • facilitation of the further development of international activities and services to students across the university;
  • provision of leadership in relation to the development of academic programs that are attractive to international students, articulation arrangements with offshore institutions, and twinning arrangements with strategic partners;
  • development of strategic marketing plans for international student recruitment;
  • identification of international opportunities, facilitation of strategic alliances and institutional links and management of the university's international Memoranda of Understanding agreements;
  • development of research agreements with international partners;
  • provision of support and advice to faculties to ensure the incorporation of internationalisation activities as part of their core business.

These responsibilities are carried out in the context of the wider university and involve close collaboration with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic), Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research), Executive Deans and Academic Board, Prospective Students Office, Adelaide Research & Innovation and Student Services.

Biography of Professor John Taplin

Professor Taplin is the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) for the University of Adelaide in South Australia.  In this capacity, he provides leadership in relation to the University’s international education programs and research relationships.  His role includes the development of policies and strategies for international student recruitment, the establishment and conduct of international agreements with overseas partner institutions, and quality assurance in relation to the provision of services for international students.

Prior to taking up this position, Professor Taplin held the Chair in Psychology at the University of Adelaide and also served for brief periods as Acting Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.  His previous research and teaching positions were at the University of Colorado and the Claremont Graduate School in the USA and the University of New South Wales in Australia.  In addition, he has twice held visiting appointments at the University of Michigan, and he has also been made an Honorary Professor by Weifang Medical University in Shandong, China.  The University of Adelaide is both his present employer and his alma mater: he was awarded the BSc (Hons) degree in 1968 and the PhD in 1972.

Professor Taplin’s research interests are concerned with the study of child development from a cognitive science perspective.  His contributions have ranged from basic research into the development of children’s thinking to the clinical assessment and management of pain in children, the design of programs for enhancing the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities, and the evaluation of alternative models for primary mental health care.   He has been the recipient of numerous research grants from the Australian Research Council and the National Health & Medical Research Council in Australia.  He has produced almost 200 scientific journal articles, book chapters, technical reports and conference papers, and served on the editorial boards of some of the leading international journals in his field.  He has also supervised the research theses of over 100 students.

Professor Taplin is registered to practise as a Psychologist in Australia and is a Fellow the Australian Psychological Society.  He is also a member or life member of a number of other major scholarly associations around the world. These include: the American Psychological Association; the Australian and New Zealand Association for Psychiatry, Psychology and Law; the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development; the European Association for International Education; NAFSA: the Association of International Educators; and the Society for Research into Child Development, for which he is the Australian representative on the International Affairs Committee.  Professor Taplin is a Director of Education Adelaide, which aims to promote this city as a destination of choice for international students, and also chairs the Board of Directors for the Ngee Ann - Adelaide Education Centre in Singapore.
