Tall Poppy Campaign Awards 2008

The prestigious Young Tall Poppy Science Awards inaugurated in 1999, are held each year in South Australia and in the Eastern States and continue to identify high achievers in an exciting and innovative approach that recognises the outstanding professional and personal commitment of our young South Australian researchers from all fields of science.

The awards acknowledge the recipients’ achievements, whilst also providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate their value as role models in the community, by promoting and encouraging an interest in science within the education sector.

For selection, an individual must show excellence in academic achievement in science or medical research, justified by a track record or by clearly demonstrated potential, whilst also providing defined excellence in community engagement.

Applications for the Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith Fund are due at the Research Branch by c.o.b tomorrow, Wednesday 9 July. The Fund encourages scientific study, research and education in disciplines related to aeronautics and aerospace technology. Applications can be submitted for Research and Development Projects or Scholarships/Sponsorship. eResearch SA Roadshow for Researchers

eResearch SA is a collaborative joint venture between the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia.

The mission of eResearch SA is to support the development, implementation and use of eResearch methodologies and activities in South Australia and to provide access to eresearch facilities and practical support for researchers from all disciplines.

Established in 2007 to coordinate the implementation of national and state eresearch strategies in South Australia, eResearch SA has three key functions:
1. To provide eresearch support to the South Australian research community.
2. To serve as the South Australian partner of Australian Research Collaboration Service.
3. To serve as the state node of anticipated future national eResearch activities.

eResearch SA is presenting a roadshow to introduce researchers to the services we offer. The free presentation will provide a 1 hour introduction to eResearch, and what eResearch SA can do for you.

This will be followed by more detailed information and demonstrations of the services provided by eResearch SA:

• data storage, management and sharing
• web-based collaboration tools
• videoconferencing
• data visualisation
• high performance computing

eResearch has something to offer researchers from all disciplines, so come along and learn more about it.

Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7) - Energy Call (European Commission)

The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) bundles all research-related EU initiatives together under a common roof playing a crucial role in reaching the European Union’s Lisbon Strategy to become the “most dynamic competitive knowledge-based economy in the world”. The ‘knowledge triangle’ — research, education and innovation — is a core factor in European efforts to meet the ambitious Lisbon goals.

The objectives of FP7 have been grouped into 4 categories: Cooperation, Ideas, People and Capacities. For each objective, a specific programme corresponds to the main areas of EU research policy. All specific programmes work together to promote and encourage the creation of European poles of (scientific) excellence in the European Knowledge Society.

FP7 is made up of 4 main blocks of activities forming 4 specific programmes plus a specific programme on nuclear research and for the Joint Research Centre (JRC):

1. Cooperation — Collaborative research (61% of the budget)
2. Ideas — European Research Council, frontier research actions (14%)
3. People — Human Potential, Marie Curie actions (9%)
4. Capacities — Research capacities (8%)
5. Euratom — Nuclear research and training (5%)
6. Joint Research Centre (3%).

Australia researchers can participate in FP7, but with their own funding. EU funding is only granted in exceptional cases, generally when specifically set out in the relevant work programme.

Projects involving Australian researchers based in Australia that are chosen for funding from the European Commission, may be eligible for NHMRC or International Science Linkages (ISL) support.

VALUE: Collaborative projects are expected to last typically two to five years. However, there is no formal minimum or maximum duration.

Fund Available:

• Renewable Electricity: EUR 42 million
• Renewable Fuel: EUR 35 million
• Clean Coal Technologies and Activity Energy: EUR 20 million
• Smart Energy Networks: EUR 5 million
• Energy Efficiency and Savings: EUR 5 million
• Energy Efficiency and Savings: EUR 40 million
  

The sponsor will not provide funding to meet the University's indirect costs (overheads). The application's budget should not include requests for this purpose. The Matsumae International Foundation

This fellowship was founded as a result of Dr Shigeyoshi Matsumae's call. The Foundation hopes to accept researchers from as many nations as possible. First priority will be given to the fields of natural science, engineering and medicine. Fellowships are available between April 2009 - March 2010.

Australian Development Research Awards 2008 Funding Round

AusAID, the Australian Agency for International Development, manages the Australian Government's official overseas aid program. As a part of AusAID's Development Research Strategy, which aims to increase the role of research in contributing to the effectiveness of the aid program, a competitive funding round has been established. AusAID is currently advertising the 2008 Funding Round for the Australian Development Research Awards.

The aim of the Australian Development Research Awards (ADRA) is to attract high quality research that informs policy development and increases the general stock of knowledge around development issues.

The 2008 ADRA Funding Round is open to all Australian and international not-for-profit institutions or organisations where research is a core component of the organisation's mandate.

Proposals should address pertinent and cutting edge questions in development research in the following areas of high priority:

Development Effectiveness
Disability
Economics
Education
Environment
Food Security
Gender
Governance and State Building
Health

Applicants can apply for funding for projects up to three years in duration, with successful proposals eligible to receive between A$50,000 and A$250,000 per year. The Funding Round consists of one stage only. Applicants are invited to submit Online Applications to AusAID by 5pm AEST Friday 29 August 2008.

Faculty Research Program (Canadian High Commission)

The FRP is designed to assist individual academics in higher education institutions to undertake short term research in and about Canada. The purpose is to increase knowledge and understanding of Canada through publication abroad of pertinent articles in the scholarly press.

While applications from all disciplines are accepted, the Canadian High Commission is particularly interested in projects that have policy relevance for Canada and Canada's foreign policy. For instance; Democracy and Rule of Law, Economic Development, Environment, Managing Diversity, North American Partnership, Peace and Security. Comparative studies will be given priority.

Applicants must hold a masters or PhD and be proficient in either English or French.The award will consist of a contribution towards international air fare of up to CDN$2,600 and an allowance of CDN$800 per complete week of stay in Canada to assist with costs of domestic travel and living expenses for a maximum of four weeks. Smaller awards may be made.

Australian Academy of the Humanities- Special Joint Project Funding: Australia and Britain - Travel Grant

The Australian Academy of the Humanities, the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and the British Academy will provide support of joint projects between Australian and British scholars.

Funding is generally provided to cover travel and maintenance costs. Projects are expected to be of one year's duration, with a possible extension of one year on reapplication. Reapplication for a further year is permissible however applicants must provide evidence of clear development of the project and understand that they are in competition with new applications. Funding is not intended to cover major research expenses.

One award of up to 8,000 pounds for a project which covers both humanities and social sciences disciplines or two awards of up to 4,000 pounds per project will be available each year to cover travel and maintenance expenses.
The award will be for one year with possible extension upon re-application.

Jean Denton & Lillian De Lissa Scholarships Committee

The scholarship is for the purpose of completing postgraduate study or advanced research or a combination of both, within Australia and/or overseas, in an area of early childhood education. The benefit of such studies or research is to advance the knowledge of early childhood education within Australia.

The purpose of the scholarship is to advance knowledge in early childhood education. The scholarship is available to any Australian citizen(s) working in Australia. In 2008, the value of the Jean Denton Memorial Scholarship will be up to a maximum of $16,000: tax exempt.

The Commonwealth Fund-Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy

The Commonwealth Fund's Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy provide a unique opportunity for mid-career health services researchers and practitioners from Australia to spend up to 12 months in the United States, conducting original research and working with leading U.S. health policy experts. Harkness Fellowships are designed for mid-career professionals who are committed to advancing health policy and practice in The Commonwealth Fund's principal areas of interest: improving health insurance coverage and access to care; and improving the quality and efficiency of health care services. Projects may include comparisons between the United States and the applicant's home country.

Each Harkness Fellowship provides up to U.S. $107,000. This amount covers:
1. Roundtrip airfare to the United States; A fixed monthly stipend for U.S. living expenses; Set up and shipping allowances;
2. Support toward the portion of the project conducted in the home country, if appropriate;
3.Funds for project-related travel, case studies, conferences and research expenses;
4.Travel funds to attend the Harkness Fellows Orientation, Commonwealth Fund International Symposium on Health Care Policy; Washington Health Policy Briefing, Canadian Health Policy Briefing, Final Reporting Seminar, and Academy Health Annual Research Meeting;
5.Institutional allowance for US mentor/placement; Health insurance coverage while in the United States; U.S. and state taxes.

Research and Innovation Policy Dialogue Workshops at The Australian National University

A series of five research and innovation policy dialouge workshops that The Australian National University has organised to support the Review of the National Innovation System. Some of these workshops have been organised in partnership with other bodies, namely the Group of Eight, the University of Melbourne, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (CCI) and the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies (FASTS).

There is also a policy dialogue underway aimed at learning from different Central Economic Ministry Perspectives on research and innovation-to be conducted via a series of smaller meetings. Award for Research Excellence 2009- GlaxoSmith Kline

The GlaxoSmithKine Australia Award for Research Excellence has recognised world-class Australian medical research, and the annual presentation dinner has become a significant event in the Australian research calendar.

Each year GlaxoSmithKline receives applications from researchers around Australia, and the first step in the selection process is the completion of nomination form. The nomination form can be downloaded from here:

The ricipient will come from the field of human health. The award is to recognise a researcher with a demonstrated track in human health, and for whom the award will facilitate career development and further achievements with potential importance to human health and Australian research.

The work will have been carried out mainly in Australia. The Award ricipient will be selected by a panel which may include members of GSK Australia and/or senior members of the scientific community. The award is valued at $60,000 to further the scientist's work and knowledge. The closing date for applications is 1 October 2008.

GSK is committed to investing in the development of the innovative Australian research, and to working alongside the scientific community to further this aim.

NHMRC Program Grants – Call for Applications (for grants commencing 2010)

NHMRC Program Grants – Call for Applications

The NHMRC will open a call for applications under its Program Grants Scheme on 31 May 2008, for grants commencing in 2010. The aim of the Program Grants scheme is to provide support for teams of high calibre researchers to pursue broadly based collaborative research activities, contributing to new knowledge health and medical research.

Program Grant applications have been scheduled to eliminate the need for applicants to make simultaneous Project Grant applications. Applications are open for new teams or current Program Grant holders in their 4th or 5th year in 2008.
