2008 DEEWR Publications Collection

Researchers and school coordinators are reminded that DEEWR (formerly DEST) publications are due in Research Branch by the end of March. We expect to receive and check over 2500 papers before the June deadline. Many thanks to those coordinators who have begun to submit papers on a progressive basis.

SA Cardiovascular Research Development Program - Call for Applications

Internal Deadline

The South Australian Cardiovascular Research Development Program (SACVRDP) will support high quality research, which is relevant to heart, stroke and blood vessel disease with a focus on supporting early career researchers.

1. Research Fellowships: Research Fellowships (4 x $150,000 per annum for 3 years) to enhance the capability of outstanding early career researchers
who have completed an MD or PhD award within the last three to ten years. Funding for this program will commence in 2009 and a maximum of two awards will be offered in this funding round. Internal Closing date is 23 February 2009.

2. Development Grants: Development Grants (2 x $400,000 per annum for 4 years) to assist emerging research leaders who have completed an MD or PhD award within the last three to ten years to collaborate and improve their research excellence sufficient to be more competitive for larger, national and international research funding per capita basis. Funding for this program will commence in 2010 and a maximum of two awards will be offered in this funding round.
Internal Closing date is 10 March 2009.

The Physiotherapists Board of Queensland - Research Funding Scheme

Department of Health & Ageing - Cancer Australia: Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme 2009

Internal Deadline

This research scheme brings together founders of cancer research in a nationally coordinated approach to funding cancer research and funding partnerships established through this scheme to help coordinate and maximise the investment in cancer research in Australia. A range of project grants that vary in duration and funding value will be offered through the Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme in 2009. Grants may be funded solely by one funding partner or co-funded by multiple funding partners. The funding categories are:

1. Funding Category A: Project grants of up to three years duration, with funding available up to $600,000 (GST-exclusive), with a maximum in any one year of
$200,000 (GST-exclusive) will be offered.

2. Funding Category B: Project grants of up to two years duration, with funding available up to $200,000 (GST-exclusive) per annum (total: $400,000 GST exclusive) will be offered.

3. Funding Category C: Project grants of up to two years duration, with funding available up to $135,000 (GST-exclusive) per annum (total: $270,000 GST exclusive) will be offered.

4. Funding Category D: Project grants of up to three years duration, with total funding available of $250,000 (GST-exclusive), and with a maximum in any one
year of $200,000 (GST exclusive), will be offered.

5. Funding Category E: Project grants of one year duration up to $90,000 (GST exclusive), will be offered by the Cure Cancer Australia Foundation to support post-doctoral researchers with less than seven years post-doctoral experience undertaking a one year research project into malignant disease.

Cure Cancer Australia Foundation - 2009 Project Grants

Australian Dental Research Foundation Inc (ADRF) - Research Grants

Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists - Novice Investigator & Project Grants

Cancer Council SA - Research Project Grants - Open for applications for funding in 2010

Research Project Grants will be for one or two years, beginning 1 January 2010. Two years of funding will generally be awarded for the more competitive grants.

Applications follow the NHMRC format which includes the requirement for lay and scientific summaries, aims, methods and expected results. The relevance of the research to cancer must be explicit in the application, under the aims and significance of the project section.

BHP Billiton Community Trust - Corporate Community Program

The BHP Billiton Corporate Community Program manages a key group of partnerships with Australian and International community and environment not-for-profit organisations and includes the administration of the BHP Billiton Community Trust.

In addition to the key partnerships, a small number of national projects from not-for-profit organisations in Australia are selected for support each year. Medical Advances Without Animals (MAWA) - Honours Research Scholarship

MAWA's aim is to promote research into the development and utilisation of valid techniques and procedures to replace the use of living animals in biomedical research. The MAWA Honours Research Scholarship has been established with the specific intention of encouraging new scientists to advance the development, validation or application of non-animal methods of research.

Applicants must be Australian citizens and recipients of the scholarship will receive an annual stipend of $7,000 with a further $3,000 to the host laboratory for research project support.

Australia & Pacific Science Foundation - Project Grants

Typically the Australia & Pacific Science Foundation (APSF) provides project grants up to A$15,000 per year for up to three years. Grants are awarded to institutions within Australia or other countries of the south west Pacific region for activities within those countries or within the region.

In seeking to achieve its aims, The Australia & Pacific Science Foundation provides support, on a competitive basis, for the following activities:

1. The top priority is to encourage high quality research by scientists in Australian national or state institutions, and similar institutions in other countries of the south west Pacific.
2. Occasional support may also be given to such activities as training, publications or conferences. Travel expenses for attendance at conferences are not funded, nor are expenses associated with the participation of scientists from countries other than that of the recipient institution.

APSF particularly favours activities that seem likely to lead to improved systems of managing land, water, plants and animals in ways which will enhance the productivity and quality of food, fisheries, plants and forests, while simultaneously conserving the natural environment, preserving biodiversity, avoiding pollution of soils and water, and enhancing human health and welfare.

The Hermon Slade Foundation - Grants

Cancer Research Institute(CRI) - Investigator Award Program

Internal Deadline

The Investigator Award Program supports accomplished assistant professors undertaking their first independent investigations in cancer immunology or general immunology. CRI now designates at least one Investigator Award per round for projects with high relevance to cancer immunology. Applicants must indicate whether they wish to be considered for this Cancer Immunology Investigator Award and, if so, must provide a description of the relevance of their proposed research to cancer immunology.

Investigators must hold a doctoral degree and be a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the time of award activation. CRI has no citizenship restrictions.

Hereditary Disease Foundation - Research Grants

Internal Deadlines

The focus of the Hereditary Disease Foundation is on Huntington's disease. Support will be for research projects that will contribute to identifying and understanding the basic defect in Huntington's disease. Areas of interest include trinucleotide expansions, animal models, gene therapy, neurobiology and development of the basal ganglia, cell survival and death, and intercellular signaling in striatal neurons.

The maximum award for research grants is $50,000.

The A-T Children's Project - Research Grant Program

The A-T Children's Project strives to assist respected scientists in developing a clearer understanding of ataxia-telangiectasia. The Project provides competitive grant awards for basic and translational research grants related to A-T. One- and two-year projects are funded up to a maximum total direct cost of US$75,000 per year.

Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF)- 2009 Research Fellow Awards

The MMRF supports innovative research efforts in the most promising areas of multiple myeloma research through several grant-making programs. The MMRF accepts applications from U.S.-based and international non-profit institutions and universities. Program guidelines and applications are available approximately 6-8 weeks prior to the submission deadline.

1. Research Fellow Awards: Research Fellow Awards provide funding to researchers with less than five years experience (post graduate degree) and working under the supervision of a research sponsor. Proposals may request up to $75,000 for one year.

Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research - Clinical Intervention Awards

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease (MJFF) announces the launch of the Clinical Intervention Awards 2009
program, an Edmond J. Safra Core Program for PD Research. The goal of the program is to support novel or critical clinical
intervention trials of promising therapeutic approaches that can significantly and fundamentally improve treatments for Parkinson’s
disease (PD). Ideal proposals will focus on tests of novel treatments that can slow or halt disease progression, or that can greatly
reduce PD motor and non-motor symptoms beyond and without the complications of current standards of care. $3 million is

National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) - Academic Advising Research Support Grant

The NACADA has a long history of supporting research within the academic advising field. Currently the association has a particular interest in soliciting proposals that document the outcomes of different advising models.

The Harvard Australian Studies Committee: Harvard-Australia Conference Grants

The Harvard Australian Studies Committee encourages applications for grants of up to US$40,000 to support academic conferences / symposia organised jointly by Australian scholars and Harvard faculty. German - Canadian Studies Research Grant

The German - Canadian Studies Research Grant is awarded on an annual basis for the best project proposal on any aspect in the field of German-Canadian Studies. The awards are for research on a subject that is relevant to the mandate of the Chair in German - Canadian Studies.

Applicants may be academics and scholars with or without institutional affiliation, K-12 teachers and students, artists, activists, undergraduate students and anyone else with a clearly defined research project in German-Canadian Studies. There are not citizenship or residency requirements.

British Academy - Small Research Grants

Internal Deadline

Grants are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences. The maximum grant is £7,500 over two years. Applications for collaborative or individual projects are equally welcome under this scheme. Applications from international groups of scholars are welcome, provided there is a UK-based scholar as lead applicant.

All applications should demonstrate that Academy funds are sought for a clearly defined, discrete piece of research, which will have an identifiable outcome on completion of the Academy-funded component of the research.

Foundation Fyssen - Post Doctoral Study Grants

The aim of the FYSSEN FOUNDATION is to "encourage all forms of scientific inquiry into cognitive mechanisms, including thought and reasoning, which underlie animal and human behaviour; their biological and cultural bases, and phylogenetic and ontogenetic development".

These study grants are meant for the training and support of post-doctoral researchers working in disciplines relevant to the aims of the Foundation such as ethology, paleontology, archaeology, anthropology, psychology, epistemology, logic and the neurosciences. AusAID - International Seminar Support Scheme

The ISSS is an Australian Government aid activity administered by AusAID. ISSS funds attendance at international development-oriented seminars in Australia and overseas. The scheme helps to develop knowledge and technical expertise in developing countries, and builds linkages between the government, academic and community sectors in Australia and partner developing countries.

Funds are limited and competition for them is strong. Applications need to provide a convincing case for support, with clear objectives and details of how they will be achieved. Successful applications must demonstrate tangible outcomes and practical contributions to the economic development/social advancement of developing countries.

Oxford Nuffield Medical Fellowships 2009/10 - Call for Applications

South Australian Cardiovascular Research Development Program - Research Fellowships

AIATSIS Conference 2009 - Call for papers

The next AIATSIS National Indigenous Studies Conference will be held from 29 September to 1 October 2009. We are now inviting expressions of interest for papers to be presented at the Conference.

In summary, the Conference theme is:

"Perspectives on urban life: connections and reconnections."

As its major theme, the Conference will consider a range of "lifestyle" questions for Indigenous people living in urban and semi-urban / regional areas. Most Indigenous people live in urban areas. To people who grew up with the cities, this was their "country" and they continued, despite hardships and a vigilant legal regime, to remain there.
