Ramaciotti Foundation - General Awards |

Applications are invited for two types of gifts only Establishment Grants and Equipment Grants. Establishment Gifts are intended to provide short term research support for a young investigator who is taking or has taken up a new position in an institution. The gift can be used for any combination of personnel, equipment, consumables or other expenses, but not for overseas travel.
Equipment applications may be made for a contribution towards the purchase of a single item of equipment costing $100,000 or more. Preference will be given to applications for an item of equipment that is to be used on various projects by a number of investigators within a department or institution or by investigators from other institutions working on collaborative projects. Preference will also be given to applications that demonstrate that such a gift from the foundations towards the cost of an expensive item would by providing leverage assist in the raising of the balance of funds required.
The Establishment gift maximum total amount is $30,000. Major Equipment applications may be made for a contribution of $30,000.
Establishment Gift applicants must have a minimum of two and a maximum of five years' cumulative postdoctoral experience as at January 1, 2009. The applicant must be the sole chief investigator of the proposed project and be in or commencing in a full-time position with a tenure for a minimum of three years and that will terminate no earlier than December 31, 2010. All applicants must be able to commence the project no later than July 1, 2009.

Australian Diabetes Society (ADS): ADS - Servier Diabetes Grants in Memory of Barry Young |

Grants will be awarded for clinical projects that involve improvement of patient care consistent with the aims of the National Service Improvement Framework for Diabetes as paraphrased below:
1. Prevent and limit the progression of diabetes Slow the onset of complications
2. Reduce preventable hospital admissions
3. Reduce variations in care between clinicians and health services, across metropolitan, rural and remote settings and in care provided to disadvantaged groups
4. Preference will be given to projects with potential applicability to diabetes care throughout Australia.
The value of the grants will vary depending on need but it is anticipated that the average grant will be for $20,000. Three to five grants will be awarded in this round.

Eligible applicants will be medical graduates or graduates of other clinical disciplines who have completed both their clinical and research training which will normally be at doctoral level and are commencing their first definitive clinical position, or have been in such a post for no more than 24 months on 1 May 2008.
The value of the fund is $60,000 for one year.
Full-time research fellows will not be eligible. Applicants should be actively engaged in clinical work and pursuing health and medical research in a university clinical department, a teaching hospital, a clinical research unit of a research institute or in an academic general practice setting.

The Distinguished Investigator Award program supports basic and/or clinical investigators.
Research must be relevant to schizophrenia, major affective disorders or other serious mental illnesses including research with bipolar disorders, borderline disorders with depression and suicide, and research with children.

The National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program, an initiative of the National Geographic Society and the Waitt Institute for Discovery, helps qualified and experienced individuals launch the most difficult stage of a project for which to secure funding—the search. Grants are made for exploratory fieldwork that holds promise for new breakthroughs in the natural and social sciences. NGS/Waitt Grants applications are processed throughout the year and grants are awarded expeditiously to help researchers take advantage of immediate opportunities.
Funded through a five-year grant from the Waitt Family Foundation, the NGS/Waitt Grants Program is administered by National Geographic Mission Programs and makes approximately one hundred grants annually of $5,000 to $15,000. The focus of the Hereditary Disease Foundation is on Huntington's disease. Support will be for research projects that will contribute to identifying and understanding the basic defect in Huntington's disease. The A-T Children's Project - Research Grant Program |

The A-T Children's Project strives to assist respected scientists in developing a clearer understanding of ataxia-telangiectasia. The Thrasher Research Fund - Early Career Award (Paediatrics)

The Thrasher Research Fund is pleased to announce the fourth year of its Early Career Award Program in for 2009. The Fund will continue to make 30 awards in 2009,expanded from 21 awards in 2006-2007. There are three funding cycles per year for New Researcher Award Program grants. Up to ten grants per cycle will be made in 2009.
The Fund is open to a variety of research topics important to children’s health. The Fund’s current focus is on clinical/translational pediatric research. Emphasis is placed on projects with the potential for findings that could be clinically applicable in a relatively short period of time for the prevention, diagnosis and/or treatment of pediatric medical problems.

AusAID - International Seminar Support Scheme

The ISSS is an Australian Government aid activity administered by AusAID.
ISSS funds attendance at international development-oriented seminars in Australia and overseas. The scheme helps to develop knowledge and technical expertise in developing countries, and builds linkages between the government, academic and community sectors in Australia and partner developing countries.
Funds are limited and competition for them is strong. Applications need to provide a convincing case for support, with clear objectives and details of how they will be achieved. Successful applications must demonstrate tangible outcomes and practical contributions to the economic development/social advancement of developing countries.
Applications are due 100 days before the relevant seminar.

Australian Museum - Fellowships |

The Museum offers a variety of fellowship opportunities including the Chadwick Biodiversity Fellowship, Visiting Research Fellowships and Visiting Collection Fellowships.
1. Chadwick Biodiversity Fellowship: This fellowship is to help recent PhD graduates establish a career in biodiversity research. Success in applying for research positions is very heavily dependent on the track record of applicants in terms of their publications and awarded grants. Students who have recently completed their PhD often have not had the opportunity to publish papers from their thesis or apply for grants. The Chadwick Biodiversity Fellowship provides this opportunity.
2. Visiting Research Fellowships: These fellowships are available to researchers working as collaborators in research projects with Australian Museum Scientists.
3. Visiting Collection Fellowships: These fellowships are designed to promote research into significant collections held by the Museum. The primary aim is to promote collection-based research that enhances the collection, including fieldwork.

Humboldt Research Fellowships for experienced researchers are the instrument with which the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables highly-qualified scientists and scholars from abroad, who completed their doctorates less than twelve years ago1 to spend extended periods of research (6-18 months; may be divided up into a maximum of three blocks) in Germany.
The value of the fellowship is worth 2,450 EUR per month.

The VESKI Innovation Fellowships are awarded annually to outstanding researchers. The VESKI Innovation Fellowships (Australian) are open to individuals who meet the following criteria in the fields of science, technology and design specifically relating to innovative technology, biotechnology, design, advanced manufacturing, environmental technologies, or the enabling sciences and technologies.

The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young researchers (after Master-level but not post-doctorate) from all countries and from all academic fields.
The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months. The monthly allowance is 810-1 200 euros (in 2009). The scholarship is intended to cover living expenses in Finland for a single person. No additional allowance for housing is paid. Expenses due to international travel to and from Finland are not covered by CIMO.
How to apply?
The prerequisite for applying is that the visiting researcher must have established contacts with the Finnish host university. The Finnish university department wishing to host him or her applies to CIMO for the grant.
Applications should be submitted at least 3 months before the intended scholarship period. Please note that although the application form is in Finnish, Swedish and English the guidelines are only in Finnish as it is the Finnish host department which applies for the grant to CIMO.
