NHMRC - New Research Grants Management System (RGMS): Implementation Commenced |

NHMRC has commenced implementation of a new Research Grants Management System to assist researchers and RAOs by supporting the full grants management process from application through to grant acquittal. RGMS features a significant on-line component allowing:
1. Researchers to maintain their profile and CV (which will automatically upload into applications).
2. Applicants, review panel members and external assessors to submit information directly into the system.
3. Grant holders and RAOs to manage grants (ethics approvals, progress and financial reports, transfers, variation requests, acquittal and final reporting).
The new RGMS is planned to be fully operational by December 2009 following a staged implementation. Development Grants, which will open in April 2009, will be piloted in the RGMS.

ARC Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development for funding commencing in 2010 |

The Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development Funding Rules and Instructions to Applicants forms for funding commencing in 2010 are now available on the ARC website at http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/dird/dird_default.htm
The main changes to the Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development scheme from the previous year are summarised in Section 5 of the Funding Rules.
A key change is the introduction of a new fellowship—the (senior) Australian Research Fellowship Indigenous (ARF Indigenous) - in addition to the current Indigenous Researcher Fellowships.
The University's internal closing date for the submission of Proposals is Monday 4 May 2009.

NHMRC - International Collaborative Indigenous Health Research Partnership (ICIHRP) Grants (Request for Applications) |

The RFA will seek joint proposals from multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral research teams bringing together Australian, New Zealander and Canadian researchers. The NHMRC, NZ HRC and the CIHR have each committed $5 million in their respective currencies to the 2009 Request for Applications (RFA). This RFA is focussed on reducing the burden of disease and inequalities in health caused by chronic disease in Indigenous people. $15 million is available to fund two type of grants:
- Proposal Development Grant and
- ICIHRP Grants
The RFA will seek joint proposals from multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral research teams bringing together Australian, New Zealander and Canadian researchers.
Note: Registration of Interest (RoI) must be submitted to the NZ HRC by 5pm, 11 April 2009 (NZ time). The Expression of Interest (EoI) must be submitted to the Research Branch by 4 May 2009.

Australian Cancer Research Foundation - Cancer Research Grants |

This Foundation is dedicated to awarding grants of significant magnitude, stimulating Australia's best scientists to embark on groundbreaking research projects to treat and prevent cancer.

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program (Deadline Extended) |

The National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program is designed to foster wide collaboration between groups of investigators and pooling of knowledge, expertise and resources to enable larger scale or accelerated research programs into the prevention, causes, treatment or management of breast cancer.
Funding will now be made available in two stages:
Stage 1: up to $1 million dollars, per annum, for 3 years (Years 1-3).
Stage 2: up to $1 million per annum for an additional two years (Years 4 and 5). Provision of Stage 2 funding will be dependent on satisfactory completion of Stage 1 research and the availability of funds.

National Breast Cancer Foundation -
Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant |

It is anticipated that research completed through a NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant will provide sufficient preliminary data to enable the investigator to prepare a proposal for future research funding. It is not expected that researchers applying for these awards will present preliminary data with their application. Applications are invited from the entire continuum of breast cancer research, from basic science to prevention, treatment and care, insofar as the proposed idea has the potential to help prevent breast cancer, improve survival and enhance quality of life.
The NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant funding is for a maximum of two years. This grant is limited in scale, with a maximum value of $200,000 per grant for direct costs over one or two years and is non-renewable.

Pfizer Australia - Research Grants |

The following are the grants programs that Pfizer Australia will be supporting in 2009:
1. Cardiovascular and lipid research: who are early in their research career having entered the field of research (or returned after an appropriate break) within the last five years. Funding for the Cardiovascular Lipid Research Grants will be up to AU$55,000 (including GST) per annum.

2. Cancer research: They are open to medical graduates who have obtained specialist qualifications within the last five years, or are currently in advanced training. The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme |

The program related primarily to health problems using beer additives which initially arose in Canada and the United States. The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme (AHRGS) aims to provide financial support for independent research in the area of Alcohol and Health.
Value of the fund is up to $35,000. The grants are available to post-graduate researchers on a competitive basis. The key objective of the AHRGS is to help build capacity among young researchers in the early stages of their career.

The Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia (ORIA) - Research Grants 2009 |

The ORIA Research Advisory Committee encourages projects which have clearly defined aims that can be achieved in the one or two years of funding. The Committee encourages pilot projects that will produce data to enable subsequent submission to other bodies for larger grants.
Grants will be available to ophthalmologists, trainee ophthalmologists or for work being done in University Departments of Ophthalmology. ORIA can consider funding individual grants in the future up to $50,000 for one year; or up to $70,000 for two years.

Australian Society for Fish Biology - Barry Jonassen Award & Hall Student Innovation Award |

1. Barry Jonassen Award: The award is to assist with the research costs incurred by an honours or post-graduate student in the field of freshwater fish biology or freshwater fisheries ("fish" includes commercially important invertebrates).
The value of the award will be at the discretion of the Society President and Education Committee but is approximately $1,000.
2. Hall Student Innovation Award: The Hall award is to assist innovative research in marine fish biology. The award is to assist with the research costs incurred by an honours or post-graduate student in the field of marine fish biology or fisheries ("fish" includes commercially important invertebrates). The application should show a significant contribution to science in general; a high degree of originality in choosing the research topic and methodology; the potential for significant benefits to the management of fisheries and aquaculture resources; and collaboration with other researchers. The value of the award will be at the discretion of the Society President and Education Committee but is approximately $500.
The award is restricted to full time honours or post-graduate students in the first or second year or their degree. This award is open to any student member of ASFB who is currently enrolled at an Australian or New Zealand university. Applications consist of a 2 page research proposal on the proposed or underway research, written during the student's first or second year of enrolment.
Applications should include, to a maximum of 2 * A4 pages, in 12 point font:
(i) Title of project, Name, University, Supervisor, Degree enrolled for, Year commenced, Contact details.
(ii) 7 line summary.
(iii) Aims, Background, Significance, Methods.
(iv) Brief budget (with respect to the value of the award) and justification.
(v) Signed by applicant and counter-signed by supervisor.

The M.A. Ingram Trust was established to support the Preservation and Study of Australian Mammals and Birds. The purpose and objects of the trust are:

The Barth Syndrome Foundation (BSF) provides funding for research on the natural history, biochemical basis, gene product function and treatment of Barth syndrome. Value of the fund is up to $40,000 for two years.
BSF is most interested in providing “seed money” to be used by experienced investigators for the testing of initial hypotheses and collection of preliminary data leading to successful long-term funding by NIH and other major granting institutions. In addition, we are especially interested in attracting new investigators to the very interesting field of Barth syndrome research.

The Leakey Foundation - General Research Grants (Pre-Application) |

The Leakey Foundation was formed to further research into human origins. Recent priorities include research into the environment, archeology and human paleontology; into the behavior, morphology, and ecology of the great apes and other primate species; and into the behavioral ecology of contemporary hunter-gatherers. Other areas of study are rarely considered.
The majority of the Foundation's General Research Grants to doctoral students are in the $3,000-to a maximum of $13,500 range; the limit of funding for a single proposal submitted by a post-doctoral applicant or a senior scientist is $22,000.
Advanced doctoral students as well as established scientists are eligible for general research grants. There are no citizenship restrictions.

The Ian Potter Foundation provides small travel grants to early career researchers with at least 3 years tenure to attend overseas conferences, to pursue their research, to have the opportunity to gain further experience and to meet their peers in the international scene.
Grants are also made to assist with the travel costs of an international key-note speaker at conferences of international status to be held within Australia.
Note: This funding round is for travel after 4 September.
The Foundation does not provide funds for domestic travel; travel grants for undergraduate, masters or doctoral students; or retrospective grants for travel already undertaken in part or in whole. Applications must be received at least 3 months prior to the intended departure date. Applicants may only submit a specific proposal once.

The Australian Academy of Science (AAS) - Scientific Visits to Europe |

The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from Australian professional scientists, including early career researchers, to visit Europe between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2010 to collaborate with European researchers.
