NHMRC - New Research Grants Management System (RGMS): Implementation Commenced

Internal Date


NHMRC has commenced implementation of a new Research Grants Management System to assist researchers and RAOs by supporting the full grants management process from application through to grant acquittal. RGMS features a significant on-line component allowing:

1. Researchers to maintain their profile and CV (which will automatically upload into applications).
2. Applicants, review panel members and external assessors to submit information directly into the system.
3. Grant holders and RAOs to manage grants (ethics approvals, progress and financial reports, transfers, variation requests, acquittal and final reporting).

The new RGMS is planned to be fully operational by December 2009 following a staged implementation. Development Grants, which will open in April 2009, will be piloted in the RGMS.

ARC Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development for funding commencing in 2010

Internal Deadline


The Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development Funding Rules and Instructions to Applicants forms for funding commencing in 2010 are now available on the ARC website at http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/dird/dird_default.htm

The main changes to the Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development scheme from the previous year are summarised in Section 5 of the Funding Rules.
A key change is the introduction of a new fellowship—the (senior) Australian Research Fellowship Indigenous (ARF Indigenous) - in addition to the current Indigenous Researcher Fellowships.

The University's internal closing date for the submission of Proposals is Monday 4 May 2009.

NSW Department of Commerce - The Co-operative Development Grants Program

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) - Research Program

Internal Deadline


The PCFA recognizes that current strategies for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer are inadequate. Progress in the management of prostate cancer requires research as well as measures to make scientifically-rigorous clinical trials accessible to patients with prostate cancer.

PCFA Grant Categories:

1. Young Investigator Grants: To support young scientists beginning a career in prostate cancer research.
2. Concept Grants: For senior scientists not currently working in prostate cancer who have an innovative proposals and are seeking startup funding.
3. Project Grants: For general proposals for prostate cancer research, including support for innovative clinical trials.
4. Equipment Grants: For significant items of equipment needed to progress ongoing prostate cancer research.

NHMRC Program Grants - Call for Applications

The aim of the Program Grants scheme is to provide support for teams of high calibre researchers to pursue broad based, multi-disciplinary and collaborative research activities. Teams will be expected to contribute to new knowledge at a leading international level in important areas of health and medical research. The scheme is available for all research approaches relevant to better health (ie biomedical, clinical, public health or health services research) and is typically for 5 years.

NHMRC - International Collaborative Indigenous Health Research Partnership (ICIHRP) Grants (Request for Applications)

Internal Deadline


The RFA will seek joint proposals from multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral research teams bringing together Australian, New Zealander and Canadian researchers. The NHMRC, NZ HRC and the CIHR have each committed $5 million in their respective currencies to the 2009 Request for Applications (RFA). This RFA is focussed on reducing the burden of disease and inequalities in health caused by chronic disease in Indigenous people. $15 million is available to fund two type of grants:

  • Proposal Development Grant and
  • ICIHRP Grants

The RFA will seek joint proposals from multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral research teams bringing together Australian, New Zealander and Canadian researchers.

Note: Registration of Interest (RoI) must be submitted to the NZ HRC by 5pm, 11 April 2009 (NZ time).  The Expression of Interest (EoI) must be submitted to the Research Branch by 4 May 2009.

Australian Cancer Research Foundation - Cancer Research Grants

This Foundation is dedicated to awarding grants of significant magnitude, stimulating Australia's best scientists to embark on groundbreaking research projects to treat and prevent cancer.

Applications featuring multi-disciplinary teams working collaboratively are encouraged. Evidence of translational impacts of research will be sought in applications. Grant Applications for amounts from $1.5m to $5m are sought.

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program (Deadline Extended)

Internal Deadline


The National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program is designed to foster wide collaboration between groups of investigators and pooling of knowledge, expertise and resources to enable larger scale or accelerated research programs into the prevention, causes, treatment or management of breast cancer.

Funding will now be made available in two stages:
Stage 1: up to $1 million dollars, per annum, for 3 years (Years 1-3).
Stage 2: up to $1 million per annum for an additional two years (Years 4 and 5).  Provision of Stage 2 funding will be dependent on satisfactory completion of Stage 1 research and the availability of funds.

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant

Internal Deadline


It is anticipated that research completed through a NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant will provide sufficient preliminary data to enable the investigator to prepare a proposal for future research funding. It is not expected that researchers applying for these awards will present preliminary data with their application. Applications are invited from the entire continuum of breast cancer research, from basic science to prevention, treatment and care, insofar as the proposed idea has the potential to help prevent breast cancer, improve survival and enhance quality of life.

The NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant funding is for a maximum of two years. This grant is limited in scale, with a maximum value of $200,000 per grant for direct costs over one or two years and is non-renewable.

Australian Society for Fish Biology - Barry Jonassen Award & Hall Student Innovation Award

Internal Deadline


1. Barry Jonassen Award:  The award is to assist with the research costs incurred by an honours or post-graduate student in the field of freshwater fish biology or freshwater fisheries ("fish" includes commercially important invertebrates). The value of the award will be at the discretion of the Society President and Education Committee but is approximately $1,000.

2. Hall Student Innovation Award: The Hall award is to assist innovative research in marine fish biology. The award is to assist with the research costs incurred by an honours or post-graduate student in the field of marine fish biology or fisheries ("fish" includes commercially important invertebrates). The application should show a significant contribution to science in general; a high degree of originality in choosing the research topic and methodology; the potential for significant benefits to the management of fisheries and aquaculture resources; and collaboration with other researchers. The value of the award will be at the discretion of the Society President and Education Committee but is approximately $500.

The award is restricted to full time honours or post-graduate students in the first or second year or their degree. This award is open to any student member of ASFB who is currently enrolled at an Australian or New Zealand university. Applications consist of a 2 page research proposal on the proposed or underway research, written during the student's first or second year of enrolment.

Applications should include, to a maximum of 2 * A4 pages, in 12 point font:

(i) Title of project, Name, University, Supervisor, Degree enrolled for, Year commenced, Contact details.
(ii) 7 line summary.
(iii) Aims, Background, Significance, Methods.
(iv) Brief budget (with respect to the value of the award) and justification.
(v) Signed by applicant and counter-signed by supervisor.

Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia - University Student Grants 2009

The Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia will provide ten grants of $1,000 each to honours or postgraduate students conducting research that will contribute to the conservation of Australian wildlife. Ian Potter foundation - Travel and Conference Grants

Internal Deadline


The Ian Potter Foundation provides small travel grants to early career researchers with at least 3 years tenure to attend overseas conferences, to pursue their research, to have the opportunity to gain further experience and to meet their peers in the international scene.

Grants are also made to assist with the travel costs of an international key-note speaker at conferences of international status to be held within Australia.

Note: This funding round is for travel after 4 September.

The Foundation does not provide funds for domestic travel; travel grants for undergraduate, masters or doctoral students; or retrospective grants for travel already undertaken in part or in whole. Applications must be received at least 3 months prior to the intended departure date. Applicants may only submit a specific proposal once.

The Australian Academy of Science (AAS) - Scientific Visits to Europe

Internal Deadline


The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from Australian professional scientists, including early career researchers, to visit Europe between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2010 to collaborate with European researchers. Proposals in any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science, will be considered. The applicant must be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident living in Australia at the time of submitting the grant application. 2009 L'ORÉAL Australia For Women in Science Fellowships

1. The $100,000 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards are awarded annually to five outstanding female scientists chosen across the world.
2. The $40,000 UNESCO-L'Oréal For Women in Science International Fellowships are awarded annually to 15 young life scientists across the world.

The Australia-Netherlands Research Collaboration (ANRC) - Overseas Travel Fellowships for PhD students

The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) - Antarctic Science Fellowships 2009-10

The SCAR Fellowship Programme is designed to encourage the active involvement of early career scientists and engineers in Antarctic scientific research, and to strengthen international capacity and cooperation in Antarctic research. The Research Advisory Committee of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) invites applications from Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the College and its Faculties and Chapters for Awards to be granted in 2009 for 2010. There are various scholarships and awards available.

1. Research Entry Scholarships: These Awards are designed to assist Advanced Trainees or younger Fellows to get started on a research career. Channel 7 Children's Research Foundation

Since 1976 the Foundation has provided grants to support research into conditions that may affect the health, education and welfare of children in South Australia and Northern Territory.

  • Each year the Foundation disburses approximately $1,000,000.
