2008 DEEWR Publications Collection

Researchers and school coordinators are reminded that DEEWR (formerly DEST) publications are due in Research Branch by the end of March. NSW Department of Commerce - The Co-operative Development Grants Program

The Australian Rotary Health - Mental Health Research Grants

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) - Research Program

Internal Deadline

The PCFA recognizes that current strategies for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer are inadequate. Progress in the management of prostate cancer requires research as well as measures to make scientifically-rigorous clinical trials accessible to patients with prostate cancer.

PCFA Grant Categories:

1. Young Investigator Grants: To support young scientists beginning a career in prostate cancer research.
2. Concept Grants: For senior scientists not currently working in prostate cancer who have an innovative proposals and are seeking startup funding.
3. Project Grants: For general proposals for prostate cancer research, including support for innovative clinical trials.
4. Equipment Grants: For significant items of equipment needed to progress ongoing prostate cancer research.

Pfizer Australia - Research Grants

The following are the grants programs that Pfizer Australia will be supporting in 2009:

1. Cardiovascular and lipid research: who are early in their research career having entered the field of research (or returned after an appropriate break) within the last five years. Funding for the Cardiovascular Lipid Research Grants will be up to AU$55,000 (including GST) per annum.

The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme

The program related primarily to health problems using beer additives which initially arose in Canada and the United States. The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme (AHRGS) aims to provide financial support for independent research in the area of Alcohol and Health.

Value of the fund is up to $35,000. The grants are available to post-graduate researchers on a competitive basis. The key objective of the AHRGS is to help build capacity among young researchers in the early stages of their career.

The Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia (ORIA) - Research Grants 2009

The ORIA Research Advisory Committee encourages projects which have clearly defined aims that can be achieved in the one or two years of funding. The Committee encourages pilot projects that will produce data to enable subsequent submission to other bodies for larger grants.

Grants will be available to ophthalmologists, trainee ophthalmologists or for work being done in University Departments of Ophthalmology. ORIA can consider funding individual grants in the future up to $50,000 for one year; or up to $70,000 for two years.

Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) - 2009 Research Grants

ACRF, as a ‘seed’ funding body, seeks applications for projects and/or programmes which require funds over and above the amount sought directly from ACRF. Ramaciotti Foundation - General Awards

Internal Deadline

Applications are invited for two types of gifts only Establishment Grants and Equipment Grants. Establishment Gifts are intended to provide short term research support for a young investigator who is taking or has taken up a new position in an institution. The gift can be used for any combination of personnel, equipment, consumables or other expenses, but not for overseas travel.

Equipment applications may be made for a contribution towards the purchase of a single item of equipment costing $100,000 or more. Preference will be given to applications for an item of equipment that is to be used on various projects by a number of investigators within a department or institution or by investigators from other institutions working on collaborative projects. Preference will also be given to applications that demonstrate that such a gift from the foundations towards the cost of an expensive item would by providing leverage assist in the raising of the balance of funds required.

The Establishment gift maximum total amount is $30,000. Major Equipment applications may be made for a contribution of $30,000.

Establishment Gift applicants must have a minimum of two and a maximum of five years' cumulative postdoctoral experience as at January 1, 2009. The applicant must be the sole chief investigator of the proposed project and be in or commencing in a full-time position with a tenure for a minimum of three years and that will terminate no earlier than December 31, 2010. All applicants must be able to commence the project no later than July 1, 2009.

Australian Diabetes Society (ADS): ADS - Servier Diabetes Grants in Memory of Barry Young

Grants will be awarded for clinical projects that involve improvement of patient care consistent with the aims of the National Service Improvement Framework for Diabetes as paraphrased below:

1. Prevent and limit the progression of diabetes Slow the onset of complications
2. Reduce preventable hospital admissions
3. Reduce variations in care between clinicians and health services, across metropolitan, rural and remote settings and in care provided to disadvantaged groups
4. Preference will be given to projects with potential applicability to diabetes care throughout Australia.

The value of the grants will vary depending on need but it is anticipated that the average grant will be for $20,000. Three to five grants will be awarded in this round.

Brain Foundation - 2009 Research Grants

Canine Research Foundation - Research Grants

The Canine Research Foundation is seeking applications for grants for research to commence in the year 2010. The Foundation is an independent public trust for the purposes of funding research directed at improving canine health, which it does through a program of annual research grants.

ANZ Charitable Trusts - Sylvia and Charles Viertel Clinical Investigatorship

Internal Deadline

Eligible applicants will be medical graduates or graduates of other clinical disciplines who have completed both their clinical and research training which will normally be at doctoral level and are commencing their first definitive clinical position, or have been in such a post for no more than 24 months on 1 May 2008.

The value of the fund is $60,000 for one year.

Full-time research fellows will not be eligible. Applicants should be actively engaged in clinical work and pursuing health and medical research in a university clinical department, a teaching hospital, a clinical research unit of a research institute or in an academic general practice setting.

The Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG) - R.M.Gibson Research Grants

Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) – Postdoctoral Fellowships

Native Vegetation Research Grants

The Native Vegetation Research Grants are established under the Native Vegetation Act 1991 to facilitate research into the preservation, enhancement and management of native vegetation

The Native Vegetation Council manages the Native Vegetation Fund and has an annual program of grants to support research activities related to native vegetation conservation.  While the Council is willing to consider any research proposals that will enhance our knowledge regarding the conservation and management of native vegetation in South Australia, it assesses applications against the following criteria:

• outcomes that inform and assist in the development of native vegetation policy by the Council,
• outcomes leading to improved management of native vegetation and/or conservation status of species or communities,
• specific recommendations aimed at improving some aspect of habitat or biodiversity conservation in South Australia.

The Barth Syndrome Foundation, Inc. (BSF) - Science & Medicine Research Grant Process (Request for Research Proposals)

The Barth Syndrome Foundation (BSF) provides funding for research on the natural history, biochemical basis, gene product function and treatment of Barth syndrome. Value of the fund is up to $40,000 for two years.

BSF is most interested in providing “seed money” to be used by experienced investigators for the testing of initial hypotheses and collection of preliminary data leading to successful long-term funding by NIH and other major granting institutions. In addition, we are especially interested in attracting new investigators to the very interesting field of Barth syndrome research.

The Leakey Foundation - General Research Grants (Pre-Application)

Internal Deadline

The Leakey Foundation was formed to further research into human origins. Recent priorities include research into the environment, archeology and human paleontology; into the behavior, morphology, and ecology of the great apes and other primate species; and into the behavioral ecology of contemporary hunter-gatherers. Other areas of study are rarely considered.

The majority of the Foundation's General Research Grants to doctoral students are in the $3,000-to a maximum of $13,500 range; the limit of funding for a single proposal submitted by a post-doctoral applicant or a senior scientist is $22,000.

Advanced doctoral students as well as established scientists are eligible for general research grants. There are no citizenship restrictions.

World Anti-Doping Agency - Social Science Research Grant Program

WADA invites applications for its Social Science Research Grant Program. For the 2009 program, WADA has identified the following three categories of projects:

1. Increasing knowledge of causes of doping behaviour and of risk and protective factors
2. Evaluating anti-doping intervention
3. Improving social science research on doping prevention (e.g., design and validation of measurement tools, behavioural models, specific cultural or regional perspectives, etc.)

Within the priorities of its 2009 program, WADA will favour projects that help understand youth with regards to doping.
The average budget of previously funded projects is the following:
1. One year projects: 17,420 USD
2. Two year projects: 30,300 USD
3. Three year projects: 64,000 USD

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) - Research Grants

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) - IDA MSI Grant Program

The International Dyslexia Association announces a competitive grant program to stimulate scientific study investigating the value of multisensory instruction (MSI) in teaching reading, particularly to students at risk for academic failure or underachievement such as those with dyslexia. Funding will be provided for new educational, neuroscience, cognitive science, or other research projects focused on this topic. Value of the is up to US$20,000 for one year.

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) - 2010 Distinguished Investigator Award

The Distinguished Investigator Award program supports basic and/or clinical investigators.

Research must be relevant to schizophrenia, major affective disorders or other serious mental illnesses including research with bipolar disorders, borderline disorders with depression and suicide, and research with children.

A small number of letters of intent will be selected for further review with additional information requested. The second tier of applications will also be brief, but will provide the investigator an opportunity to provide more detail on methods, potential significance, feasibility, and institutional support. The total request should not exceed $US100,000.

Australian Society for Fish Biology - Barry Jonassen Award & Hall Student Innovation Award

1. Barry Jonassen Award:  The award is to assist with the research costs incurred by an honours or post-graduate student in the field of freshwater fish biology or freshwater fisheries ("fish" includes commercially important invertebrates). The value of the award will be at the discretion of the Society President and Education Committee but is approximately $1,000.

2. Hall Student Innovation Award: The Hall award is to assist innovative research in marine fish biology. The award is to assist with the research costs incurred by an honours or post-graduate student in the field of marine fish biology or fisheries ("fish" includes commercially important invertebrates). The application should show a significant contribution to science in general; a high degree of originality in choosing the research topic and methodology; the potential for significant benefits to the management of fisheries and aquaculture resources; and collaboration with other researchers. The value of the award will be at the discretion of the Society President and Education Committee but is approximately $500.

The award is restricted to full time honours or post-graduate students in the first or second year or their degree. This award is open to any student member of ASFB who is currently enrolled at an Australian or New Zealand university. Applications consist of a 2 page research proposal on the proposed or underway research, written during the student's first or second year of enrolment.

Applications should include, to a maximum of 2 * A4 pages, in 12 point font:

(i) Title of project, Name, University, Supervisor, Degree enrolled for, Year commenced, Contact details.
(ii) 7 line summary.
(iii) Aims, Background, Significance, Methods.
(iv) Brief budget (with respect to the value of the award) and justification.
(v) Signed by applicant and counter-signed by supervisor.

Marine National Facility - Call for Applications 2010-2011

Applications are invited for time in the Marine National Facility vessel RV Southern Surveyor's 2010-2011 Voyage Schedule. It will accept applications for projects operating in all Australian and regional seas and oceans. Southern Surveyor is equipped to support research in the following general areas:

• Physical, chemical and biological oceanography;
• Marine geosciences;
• Environmental sciences; and
• Fisheries research.

The Angelman Syndrome Foundation - 2009 Request for Behavioral Research Proposal

The Angelman Syndrome Foundation announces the availability of up to $200,000 to be awarded in support of research aimed at providing improved understanding, identification and effective therapeutic strategies for the behavioral difficulties known to occur in the Angelman syndrome.  Proposals are encouraged to concentrate on practical treatment strategies that may be implemented in the home and school setting. National Geographic Society - Waitt Grants Program

Internal Deadlines

The National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program, an initiative of the National Geographic Society and the Waitt Institute for Discovery, helps qualified and experienced individuals launch the most difficult stage of a project for which to secure funding—the search. Grants are made for exploratory fieldwork that holds promise for new breakthroughs in the natural and social sciences. NGS/Waitt Grants applications are processed throughout the year and grants are awarded expeditiously to help researchers take advantage of immediate opportunities.

Funded through a five-year grant from the Waitt Family Foundation, the NGS/Waitt Grants Program is administered by National Geographic Mission Programs and makes approximately one hundred grants annually of $5,000 to $15,000. Proposals are considered as they are received and awards are made within weeks of application.

Centre for International Mobility (Finland)

The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young researchers (after Master-level but not post-doctorate) from all countries and from all academic fields.

The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months. The monthly allowance is 810-1 200 euros (in 2009). The scholarship is intended to cover living expenses in Finland for a single person. No additional allowance for housing is paid. Expenses due to international travel to and from Finland are not covered by CIMO.

How to apply?

The prerequisite for applying is that the visiting researcher must have established contacts with the Finnish host university. The Finnish university department wishing to host him or her applies to CIMO for the grant.
