NHMRC - New Research Grants Management System (RGMS): Implementation Commenced

Internal Date


NHMRC has commenced implementation of a new Research Grants Management System to assist researchers and RAOs by supporting the full grants management process from application through to grant acquittal.

The new RGMS is planned to be fully operational by December 2009 following a staged implementation. Development Grants, which will open in April 2009, will be piloted in the RGMS.

ARC Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development for funding commencing in 2010

Internal Deadline


The Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development Funding Rules and Instructions to Applicants forms for funding commencing in 2010 are now available on the ARC website at http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/dird/dird_default.htm

The main changes to the Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development scheme from the previous year are summarised in Section 5 of the Funding Rules.
A key change is the introduction of a new fellowship - the (senior) Australian Research Fellowship Indigenous (ARF Indigenous) - in addition to the current Indigenous Researcher Fellowships.

The University's internal closing date for the submission of Proposals is Monday 4 May 2009.

Prime Minister's Prizes for Science: 2009 Nominations Now Open

Nominations are invited for the Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science, which are offered to Australian citizens or those who hold permanent residence status in Australia. Nominations are now open for national science and science teaching awards:

• The $300,000 Prime Minister’s Prize for Science.
• The $50,000 Science Minister’s Prize for Life Scientist of the Year.
• The $50,000 Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year.

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission - Fulbright Symposium

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its programs for educational and cultural exchange between Australia and the United States in 2010, and will offer a grant of $30,000 to an organisation selected to host the special Fulbright 60th Anniversary Symposium.

The Fulbright Symposium is to be held between 1st March and 30th September 2010 and will be identified as the Fulbright 60th Anniversary Symposium in all publicity. The grant is a contribution towards the cost of organising the Symposium and may be applied to any cost elements at the discretion of the organisers.

The Group of Eight - Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme

Internal Deadline


The Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme aims to:

  • foster research collaboration of the highest quality between Australian researchers from Go8 universities and German researchers.
  • result in research outcomes and the exchange of skills and knowledge of mutual benefit to Australia and Germany.

The Go8 and the DAAD will each provide around 160,000 euros (AUD250,000) in 2010 and 2011 to support projects successful in the 2009 selection round. The German researchers must apply through DAAD and the Australian researchers apply through the Go8. Exchange participants must either be employed as academic staff members in a teaching and research or research only role at a Go8 university, or a PhD student involved in the research project submitted by an eligible staff member.

Beyondblue Victorian Centre of Excellence in Depression and Related Disorders Research Grant Round 2009

The beyondblue Victorian Centre of Excellence is now calling for applications for research grants for 2009. For this funding round, a total of $1.5 million will be made available for a combination of large and small grants. Large grants are valued up to $500,000 over three to five years and small grants are valued up to $100,000 over two years.

The principal investigator must be based in Victoria; however interstate or international collaborations are welcome. Researchers who have been the principal investigator on two or more previous grants are not eligible to apply for further funding grants, though they may be co-investigators.

NHMRC Program Grants

The aim of the Program Grants scheme is to provide support for teams of high calibre researchers to pursue broad based, multi-disciplinary and collaborative research activities. Teams will be expected to contribute to new knowledge at a leading international level in important areas of health and medical research. The scheme is available for all research approaches relevant to better health (ie biomedical, clinical, public health or health services research) and is typically for 5 years.

NHMRC - International Collaborative Indigenous Health Research Partnership (ICIHRP) Grants

Internal Deadline


The RFA will seek joint proposals from multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral research teams bringing together Australian, New Zealander and Canadian researchers. The NHMRC, NZ HRC and the CIHR have each committed $5 million in their respective currencies to the 2009 Request for Applications (RFA). This RFA is focussed on reducing the burden of disease and inequalities in health caused by chronic disease in Indigenous people. $15 million is available to fund two type of grants:

  • Proposal Development Grant and
  • ICIHRP Grants

The RFA will seek joint proposals from multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral research teams bringing together Australian, New Zealander and Canadian researchers.

Note: Registration of Interest (RoI) must be submitted to the NZ HRC by 5pm, 11 April 2009 (NZ time).  The Expression of Interest (EoI) must be submitted to the Research Branch by 4 May 2009.

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program (Deadline Extended)

The National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program is designed to foster wide collaboration between groups of investigators and pooling of knowledge, expertise and resources to enable larger scale or accelerated research programs into the prevention, causes, treatment or management of breast cancer.

Funding will now be made available in two stages:
Stage 1: up to $1 million dollars, per annum, for 3 years (Years 1-3).
Stage 2: up to $1 million per annum for an additional two years (Years 4 and 5).  Provision of Stage 2 funding will be dependent on satisfactory completion of Stage 1 research and the availability of funds.

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant

Internal Deadline


It is anticipated that research completed through a NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant will provide sufficient preliminary data to enable the investigator to prepare a proposal for future research funding. It is not expected that researchers applying for these awards will present preliminary data with their application. Applications are invited from the entire continuum of breast cancer research, from basic science to prevention, treatment and care, insofar as the proposed idea has the potential to help prevent breast cancer, improve survival and enhance quality of life.

The NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant funding is for a maximum of two years. This grant is limited in scale, with a maximum value of $200,000 per grant for direct costs over one or two years and is non-renewable.

Cultural Cooperation Program between the Ministry of Culture and the Australian National University - Call for Applications

The Spanish Ministry of Culture is delighted to announce that the Cultural Cooperation Program between the Ministry of Culture and the Australian National University is now open for 2009. The objective of the program is to foster cultural and research links between Australia and Spain to encourage ever deeper friendship and cultural cooperation between the peoples of our two countries.

Any cultural project implemented in Australia or in Nauru, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu, which has a link with Spain, preferably present day Spain are eligible.

The cooperation program covers up to 50% of the costs of a project. The remaining 50% should be provided by any other legal or physical person, from either the private or public sector, of any nationality but, preferably Australian. It is the responsibility of the applicant to look for this co-sponsor.

The Wenner - Gren Foundation: International Collaborative Research Grants

Internal Deadline


The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills to the project.

Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication. By encouraging international collaborations, the grant contributes to the development of an international anthropology that values and incorporates different national perspectives and resources. By providing training funds, the grant helps to build capacity in countries were anthropology may be under-resourced. Each researcher must hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification in anthropology or a related discipline.

The grants are for a maximum of US$30,000 for the research project.

Internal deadline for Round 1 is 25 May 2009 for projects starting in January through June of the following year.
Internal deadline for Round 2 is 24 November 2009 for projects starting in July through December of the following year.

Ian Potter foundation - Travel and Conference Grants

Internal Deadline


The Ian Potter Foundation provides small travel grants to early career researchers with at least 3 years tenure to attend overseas conferences, to pursue their research, to have the opportunity to gain further experience and to meet their peers in the international scene.

Grants are also made to assist with the travel costs of an international key-note speaker at conferences of international status to be held within Australia.

Note: This funding round is for travel after 4 September.

The Foundation does not provide funds for domestic travel; travel grants for undergraduate, masters or doctoral students; or retrospective grants for travel already undertaken in part or in whole. Applications must be received at least 3 months prior to the intended departure date. Applicants may only submit a specific proposal once.

Royal Australasian College of Physicians - Research Entry Scholarships & Post Higher Degree Awards

The Research Advisory Committee of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) invites applications from Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the College and its Faculties and Chapters for Awards to be granted in 2009 for 2010. There are various scholarships and awards available.

1. Research Entry Scholarships: These Awards are designed to assist Advanced Trainees or younger Fellows to get started on a research career. The Awards provide stipend support while they further develop their skills and experience in clinical, epidemiological or basic research. The internal closing date is 24 April 2009.

2. Post Higher Degree Awards: These Awards are designed for Fellows who have received a substantial level of formal research training normally a PhD/MD. The internal closing date is 22 June 2009.

The Australia-Netherlands Research Collaboration (ANRC) - Overseas Travel Fellowships for PhD students

Applications are invited from individuals currently enrolled in a PhD program in an Australian university who are researching Southeast Asia. Funding is available for students to conduct specific, defined tasks in the Netherlands related to their PhD. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) - Antarctic Science Fellowships 2009-10

The SCAR Fellowship Programme is designed to encourage the active involvement of early career scientists and engineers in Antarctic scientific research, and to strengthen international capacity and cooperation in Antarctic research. Topics for support should make a contribution to the objectives of one or more of the five Scientific Research Programmes endorsed by SCAR

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Early Career Fellowship

The aim of this award is to support the development of early career researchers with outstanding potential for a career in breast cancer research. Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations - Indigenous Staff Scholarships

Internal Deadline


A strong and visible presence by Indigenous people in higher education reduces cultural isolation and heightens the potential for successful outcomes for Indigenous people studying or working in the higher education sector. Many Indigenous staff at Australia’s public higher education institutions are also leaders and mentors to Indigenous people contemplating or undertaking study, and the demands of this role may limit their professional development opportunities.

Five national scholarships are awarded annually, each providing approximately $12,000 (indexed annually) to cover tuition fees and/or student contribution amounts for that year, and a non-taxable stipend of approximately $24,200 for each scholarship holder (indexed annually).

BURSARY


International Education Association Inc. (ISANA) - Bursaries

These bursaries are being offered to students undertaking research at the post-graduate level in a university in Australia or New Zealand, into areas relating to the education, support and well-being of international students studying in these countries.

The bursaries will be awarded for a refereed paper authored or co-authored by the student, presented at the conference, and deemed to be most worthy by the selection panel.

Bursaries will range in value from $A1500.00 to $A500.00. All of the bursaries will be accompanied by a conference registration fee waiver, to allow the recipients to present their papers and receive their awards.

Since 1976 the Foundation has provided grants to support research into conditions that may affect the health, education and welfare of children in South Australia and Northern Territory.

Australian Society for Fish Biology - Barry Jonassen Award & Hall Student Innovation Award

1. Barry Jonassen Award:  The award is to assist with the research costs incurred by an honours or post-graduate student in the field of freshwater fish biology or freshwater fisheries ("fish" includes commercially important invertebrates). The value of the award will be at the discretion of the Society President and Education Committee but is approximately $1,000.

2. Hall Student Innovation Award: The Hall award is to assist innovative research in marine fish biology. The award is to assist with the research costs incurred by an honours or post-graduate student in the field of marine fish biology or fisheries ("fish" includes commercially important invertebrates). The application should show a significant contribution to science in general; a high degree of originality in choosing the research topic and methodology; the potential for significant benefits to the management of fisheries and aquaculture resources; and collaboration with other researchers. The value of the award will be at the discretion of the Society President and Education Committee but is approximately $500.

2009 L'ORÉAL Australia for Women in Science Fellowships

1. The $100,000 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards are awarded annually to five outstanding female scientists chosen across the world.
