2009 SA Science Excellence Awards |

The SA Government support the South Australian Science Excellence Awards as a means to highlight the diversity of scientific research in this State, and facilitate a better understanding of the ways in which research is linked to the development of new technologies and products.
Researchers are encouraged to nominate for these prestigious awards. Awards will be presented in the following categories:
- South Australian Scientist of the Year:
One will be awarded receiving prize money to the value of $50,000.
- South Australian Young Tall Poppy of the Year:
One will be awarded receiving prize money to the value of $15,000.
- Excellence in Research: One will be awarded in each category receiving prize money to the value of $10,000.

The Group of Eight - Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme |

The Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme aims to:
- foster research collaboration of the highest quality between Australian researchers from Go8 universities and German researchers.
- result in research outcomes and the exchange of skills and knowledge of mutual benefit to Australia and Germany.
The Go8 and the DAAD will each provide around 160,000 euros (AUD250,000) in 2010 and 2011 to support projects successful in the 2009 selection round. The German researchers must apply through DAAD and the Australian researchers apply through the Go8. Exchange participants must either be employed as academic staff members in a teaching and research or research only role at a Go8 university, or a PhD student involved in the research project submitted by an eligible staff member.

National Breast Cancer Foundation -
Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant |

It is anticipated that research completed through a NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant will provide sufficient preliminary data to enable the investigator to prepare a proposal for future research funding. It is not expected that researchers applying for these awards will present preliminary data with their application. Applications are invited from the entire continuum of breast cancer research, from basic science to prevention, treatment and care, insofar as the proposed idea has the potential to help prevent breast cancer, improve survival and enhance quality of life.
The NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant funding is for a maximum of two years. This grant is limited in scale, with a maximum value of $200,000 per grant for direct costs over one or two years and is non-renewable.

The following are the grants programs that Pfizer Australia will be supporting in 2009:
1. Cardiovascular and lipid research: who are early in their research career having entered the field of research (or returned after an appropriate break) within the last five years. Funding for the Cardiovascular Lipid Research Grants will be up to AU$55,000 (including GST) per annum.

Australian Antarctic Science applications 2010/11 - Applications Open |

Australian Antarctic Science applications for the 2010/11 season are now open. In 2010/11:
1. A special focus is writing-up projects and finalising data sets from research undertaken within the International Polar Year and the current Science Strategy.
2. Multidisciplinary projects offering a synthetic approach to data analysis are particularly encouraged.
The total grant funds available to Australian University researchers is $750,000 (check eligibility). Grants up to $30,000 are available for individual projects. Multidisciplinary projects may seek up to $60,000 but applicants need to seek approval from the Chief Scientist prior to applying.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) - Research Grants Opportunities |

AFSP offers six types of research grants:
1. Linked Standard Research Grants: for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.
2. Young Investigator Grants: for up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator’s research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.
3. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.
4. Standard Research Grants: for up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.
5. Distinguished Investigator Grants: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.
6. Pilot Grants: of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

The A-T Children's Project - Research Grant Program |

The A-T Children's Project strives to assist respected scientists in developing a clearer understanding of ataxia-telangiectasia. The Project provides competitive grant awards for basic and translational research grants related to A-T. One- and two-year projects are funded up to a maximum total direct cost of US$75,000 per year.

The Catherine Helen Spence Memorial Scholarship 2009 |

This Scholarship is awarded to enable the holder to undertake, in Australia or overseas, a study in the field of social science, the investigation of social problems, or a combination of both those areas. The investigation or study must be relevant to social conditions in South Australia and be capable of being applied for the benefit of the people of this state.
It is open to women between the age of 20 and 40 years who have been a bona fide resident of South Australia for a minimum of 5 years immediately prior to the closing date of applications.

African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) - Victor Rothschild Fellowships |

AIMS specially encourage African PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working overseas to apply for Victor Rothschild fellowships to help them establish contacts with African scientists, students and teachers across the continent.
AIMS will cover full travel, accommodation and subsistence costs for the selected Victor Rothschild fellows. A research lab will be available and the fellows will receive a small stipend to cover incidental costs. Fellows will be encouraged to participate in the AIMS teaching program, and to use the AIMS facilities including computer laboratory and library, to conduct scientific research during their stay

Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) - Fellowships Programme |

The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young researchers (after Master-level but not post-doctorate) from all countries and from all academic fields.

ARC Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development for funding commencing in 2010 |

The Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development Funding Rules and Instructions to Applicants forms for funding commencing in 2010 are available on the ARC website at http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/dird/dird_default.htm
The main changes to the Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development scheme from the previous year are summarised in Section 5 of the Funding Rules.
A key change is the introduction of a new fellowship - the (senior) Australian Research Fellowship Indigenous (ARF Indigenous) - in addition to the current Indigenous Researcher Fellowships.
The University's internal closing date for the submission of Proposals was Monday 4 May 2009.

International Education Association Inc. (ISANA) - Bursaries |

These bursaries are being offered to students undertaking research at the post-graduate level in a university in Australia or New Zealand, into areas relating to the education, support and well-being of international students studying in these countries.
The bursaries will be awarded for a refereed paper authored or co-authored by the student, presented at the conference, and deemed to be most worthy by the selection panel.
Bursaries will range in value from $A1500.00 to $A500.00. All of the bursaries will be accompanied by a conference registration fee waiver, to allow the recipients to present their papers and receive their awards.

Ian Potter foundation - Travel and Conference Grants |

The Ian Potter Foundation provides small travel grants to early career researchers with at least 3 years tenure to attend overseas conferences, to pursue their research, to have the opportunity to gain further experience and to meet their peers in the international scene.
Grants are also made to assist with the travel costs of an international key-note speaker at conferences of international status to be held within Australia.
Note: This funding round is for travel after 4 September.
The Foundation does not provide funds for domestic travel; travel grants for undergraduate, masters or doctoral students; or retrospective grants for travel already undertaken in part or in whole. A strong and visible presence by Indigenous people in higher education reduces cultural isolation and heightens the potential for successful outcomes for Indigenous people studying or working in the higher education sector. Many Indigenous staff at Australia’s public higher education institutions are also leaders and mentors to Indigenous people contemplating or undertaking study, and the demands of this role may limit their professional development opportunities.
Five national scholarships are awarded annually, each providing approximately $12,000 (indexed annually) to cover tuition fees and/or student contribution amounts for that year, and a non-taxable stipend of approximately $24,200 for each scholarship holder (indexed annually).
