2009 SA Science Excellence Awards

External Deadline

The SA Government support the South Australian Science Excellence Awards as a means to highlight the diversity of scientific research in this State, and facilitate a better understanding of the ways in which research is linked to the development of new technologies and products.

Researchers are encouraged to nominate for these prestigious awards. Awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • South Australian Scientist of the Year: One will be awarded receiving prize money to the value of $50,000.

  • South Australian Young Tall Poppy of the Year: One will be awarded receiving prize money to the value of $15,000.

  • Excellence in Research: One will be awarded in each category receiving prize money to the value of $10,000.

The Group of Eight - Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme

Internal Deadline


The Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme aims to:

  • foster research collaboration of the highest quality between Australian researchers from Go8 universities and German researchers.
  • result in research outcomes and the exchange of skills and knowledge of mutual benefit to Australia and Germany.

The Go8 and the DAAD will each provide around 160,000 euros (AUD250,000) in 2010 and 2011 to support projects successful in the 2009 selection round. The German researchers must apply through DAAD and the Australian researchers apply through the Go8. Exchange participants must either be employed as academic staff members in a teaching and research or research only role at a Go8 university, or a PhD student involved in the research project submitted by an eligible staff member.

Arthritis Australia - Grants In Aid and Project Grants 2010

Internal Deadline


Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.

Grants are typically for short-term projects with well defined aims that can be achieved within a 12 month period. The amount allocated is generally in the range of $10,000 - $15,000 per grant for new investigator grants. A maximum of four project grants valued up to $50,000 will be available, including grants focusing on rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Selection is by review process. It is expected that an explicit, justified budget will be provided as part of your application.

Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia Inc - Research Grants 2010

Internal Deadline


Researchers working in Australia in fields that are relevant to motor neurone disease are invited to apply for funding to support research in the calendar year 2010.

1. Grants-in-Aid for research into motor neurone disease in 2010: Applications for projects in biomedical and health care research are encouraged. A
range of grants, including the named grants below, are offered. In recent years, grants-in-aid have ranged from $15,000 to $35,000 with an average of around $25,000.

2. Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010 - 2012)
: The Fellowships of the MND Research Institute of Australia aim to encourage young researchers to focus their interest on MND. The Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record in
areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease. Salary will be funded for up to three years at $72,500 per year.

Kidney Health Australia - Medical Research Funding Program (Seeding Grants)

Internal Deadline


The Kidney Health Australia Medical Research Funding Program provides funding annually to kidney related research projects.

1. Seeding Grants: Kidney Health Australia provides funding for seeding grants of up to $15,000 per year (or more depending on MSAC consideration) for up to an optional maximum of two years for research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract.

The application should be for a genuinely new research idea. Preferred ranking will be given to applicants in the early stages of their research career applying for the first time as Chief Investigator. The grants will be for biomedical research work to be carried out by Australians in Australia. The internal deadline is 23 June 2009.

2. Biomedical Research Scholarships: Kidney Health Australia provides scholarships for individuals wishing to study full time for the research degrees of PhD or MD and Masters by research, by undertaking research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidney. The amount of the scholarship stipend will range from $28,000 (Science) to $33,000 (Medical), depending on the qualifications the applicant holds and duration of study, for a period of up to 2 years for a Masters by Research, and up to 3 years for a PhD degree. Applicants should have graduated, or be proposing to graduate in the current academic year. The internal deadline is 21 August 2009.

Cystic Fibrosis in Australia - Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust Grants

The Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust (ACFRT) seeks to allocate funds for high quality research at a national level. The Trust calls for applications for research grants for projects relating to Cystic Fibrosis, its cause, treatment and attendant social issues.

Pfizer Australia - Research Grants

Internal Deadlines


The following are the grants programs that Pfizer Australia will be supporting in 2009:

1. Cancer research: They are open to medical graduates who have obtained specialist qualifications within the last five years, or are currently in advanced training. Applications will also be considered on a case by case basis from graduates returning to research after an appropriate break. Funding for the APEC Research Grants will be up to AU$55,000 (including GST) per annum. The internal closing date is 22 May 2009.

2. The Norman Wettenhall Foundation - Foundation Grants

Australian Antarctic Science applications 2010/11 - Applications Open

Internal Deadline


Australian Antarctic Science applications for the 2010/11 season are now open. In 2010/11:

1. A special focus is writing-up projects and finalising data sets from research undertaken within the International Polar Year and the current Science Strategy.
2. Multidisciplinary projects offering a synthetic approach to data analysis are particularly encouraged.

The total grant funds available to Australian University researchers is $750,000 (check eligibility). Grants up to $30,000 are available for individual projects. Multidisciplinary projects may seek up to $60,000 but applicants need to seek approval from the Chief Scientist prior to applying.

French Australian Science and Technology (FAST) Program - Call for proposals Round Seven 2009

Internal Deadlines


The objective of FAST is to promote and support scientific and technological cooperation between Australian and French researchers from public and private institutions or enterprises.

Under the FAST program, Australia will contribute a total of up to $A 250,000 per round and France up to 150,000 € per round.

FAST will provide financial assistance, on a competitive basis, for collaborative research projects (including project specific follow-up meetings) between Australian and French researchers. Eligible activities for funding support are international travel and living expenses only. Accordingly, funding does not extend to insurance, salaries or equipment expenses. Individual applications may request funding for up to 2 years.

Under the FAST program Round Seven, applications will be considered for research collaboration in the areas of space sciences and astronomy, Materials and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT). Projects which include an environmental science component will be encouraged and assessed on merit along with all applications.

US Defense Threat Reduction Agency - Basic Research for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction (C-WMD)

The aim of the project is to provide capabilities to reduce, eliminate and counter the threat and effects from chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high yield explosives.  Each seeks to identify, adopt, and adapt emerging and revolutionary sciences that may demonstrate high payoff potential to counter-WMD threats. This announcement solicits Proposals for long-term challenges in specific fundamental areas of Basic Research that offer a significant contribution to the current body of knowledge or further the understanding of phenomena and observable facts and may have impact on future capabilities

Funding for participation in this program is highly competitive and the cost of proposed research should be strictly maintained in the award amounts outlined. Preference will be given to Single Investigator Awards and Young Investigator Awards.

Arthritis Australia - Fellowships & Scholarships

Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.

1. Fellowships:
The Heald Fellowship is available for research programs both overseas and in Australia. Please note that this is for one year only and there will be no renewals, except in rare circumstances e.g. part-time research.

2. Scholarships
: Arthritis Australia offers scholarships for young science and medical graduates to undertake thesis studies into arthritis and related disorders at recognised universities. These scholarships provide research training to doctorate or masters level and are designed to develop the intellectual and technical expertise required for a career involving laboratory and clinical investigation. Scholarships are intended, in general, to support basic and clinical research training within Australian research units and as a precursor to more advanced study in Australia and overseas. Scholarships are for one year and are renewable for three years, depending on progress and funding priorities.

UNESCO - L'Oréal: Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme for Young Women in Life Sciences

Within the framework of the UNESCO Co-Sponsored Fellowships Scheme, a joint programme has been launched with the L'Oréal Corporate Foundation with a view to promoting the contribution of young women - from all over the world - in research developments in the field of life sciences.

Candidates must already be engaged in pursuing research at the doctoral or post-doctoral level in one or allied fields of life sciences including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and physiology. Projects involving animal models (i.e. experimentation using vertebrate laboratory animals) are rejected, and proposals in the area of cosmetics research are NOT encouraged; preference is given to non cosmetic research.

At least half of the period of the fellowship must be undertaken abroad, for a minimum duration of 6 months and a maximum duration of 12 months. If an extension is granted then duration abroad is minimum 12 months and maximum 22 months. In the latter case, the applicant is requested to complete the studies in her own country for a minimum of two months.

Durham University's Institute of Advanced Study - Fellowship Opportunity 2010/11

Internal Deadline


There are two types of fellowship available: 'fast track' for early to mid career academics and 'distinguished' for mid to late career academics. Each fellowship bestows its recipient with an honorarium £23,000),a travel allowance, accommodation, and money to buy out them out from their teaching if this is necessary in order for them to be able to accept the fellowship (up to £8,000).

There are up to 20 fellowships available and each is for a three month period (either October - December 2010 or January - March 2011) and most, but not all, will be awarded to individuals whose research provides the best fit with the Institute's annual theme.

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant

Internal Deadline


It is anticipated that research completed through a NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant will provide sufficient preliminary data to enable the investigator to prepare a proposal for future research funding. It is not expected that researchers applying for these awards will present preliminary data with their application. Applications are invited from the entire continuum of breast cancer research, from basic science to prevention, treatment and care, insofar as the proposed idea has the potential to help prevent breast cancer, improve survival and enhance quality of life.

The NBCF Novel Concept Award / Pilot Study Grant funding is for a maximum of two years. This grant is limited in scale, with a maximum value of $200,000 per grant for direct costs over one or two years and is non-renewable.

Ian Potter foundation - Travel and Conference Grants

Internal Deadline


The Ian Potter Foundation provides small travel grants to early career researchers with at least 3 years tenure to attend overseas conferences, to pursue their research, to have the opportunity to gain further experience and to meet their peers in the international scene.

Grants are also made to assist with the travel costs of an international key-note speaker at conferences of international status to be held within Australia.

Note: This funding round is for travel after 4 September.

The Foundation does not provide funds for domestic travel; travel grants for undergraduate, masters or doctoral students; or retrospective grants for travel already undertaken in part or in whole. Applications must be received at least 3 months prior to the intended departure date. Applicants may only submit a specific proposal once.

Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations - Indigenous Staff Scholarships

A strong and visible presence by Indigenous people in higher education reduces cultural isolation and heightens the potential for successful outcomes for Indigenous people studying or working in the higher education sector. Many Indigenous staff at Australia’s public higher education institutions are also leaders and mentors to Indigenous people contemplating or undertaking study, and the demands of this role may limit their professional development opportunities.

Five national scholarships are awarded annually, each providing approximately $12,000 (indexed annually) to cover tuition fees and/or student contribution amounts for that year, and a non-taxable stipend of approximately $24,200 for each scholarship holder (indexed annually).

The aim of the Program Grants scheme is to provide support for teams of high calibre researchers to pursue broad based, multi-disciplinary and collaborative research activities.
