2008 DEEWR Publications Collection

Researchers and school coordinators are reminded that DEEWR (formerly DEST) publications are due in Research Branch by the end of March. We expect to receive and check over 2500 papers before the June deadline. Many thanks to those coordinators who have begun to submit papers on a progressive basis.

The NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing (OLGR) - Gambling Harm Minimisation: The Impact of ATM Location, Withdrawal Limits and Restrictions on Note Acceptors

The NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing is seeking proposals to undertake a research project to determine the most appropriate distance between ATMs and gaming areas in venues with gaming machines in order to minimise harms associated with problem gambling. The study will also examine the impacts of implementing withdrawal limits for ATMs in gaming machine venues and modifying gaming machine note acceptors so they do not accept $100 and $50 notes.

A total funding budget of up to $195,000 (excluding GST) is available for the conduct of the Gambling Harm Minimisation Research.

NSW Department of Commerce - The Co-operative Development Grants Program

The Co-operative Development Grants Program provides funding for research projects, education and feasibility studies that assist the NSW co-operative sector to grow and remain a viable sector of our economy. Criminology Research Council - 2009 Research Grants

Arthritis Australia - Grants In Aid and Project Grants 2010

Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.

Grants are typically for short-term projects with well defined aims that can be achieved within a 12 month period. The amount allocated is generally in the range of $10,000 - $15,000 per grant for new investigator grants. A maximum of four project grants valued up to $50,000 will be available, including grants focusing on rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Selection is by review process. It is expected that an explicit, justified budget will be provided as part of your application.

Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia Inc - Research Grants 2010

Researchers working in Australia in fields that are relevant to motor neurone disease are invited to apply for funding to support research in the calendar year 2010.

1. Grants-in-Aid for research into motor neurone disease in 2010: Applications for projects in biomedical and health care research are encouraged. A
range of grants, including the named grants below, are offered. In recent years, grants-in-aid have ranged from $15,000 to $35,000 with an average of around $25,000.

2. Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010 - 2012): The Fellowships of the MND Research Institute of Australia aim to encourage young researchers to focus their interest on MND. The Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record in
areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease. Salary will be funded for up to three years at $72,500 per year.

Kidney Health Australia - Medical Research Funding Program (Seeding Grants)

The Kidney Health Australia Medical Research Funding Program provides funding annually to kidney related research projects.

1. Seeding Grants: Kidney Health Australia provides funding for seeding grants of up to $15,000 per year (or more depending on MSAC consideration) for up to an optional maximum of two years for research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract.

The application should be for a genuinely new research idea. Preferred ranking will be given to applicants in the early stages of their research career applying for the first time as Chief Investigator. The grants will be for biomedical research work to be carried out by Australians in Australia. The internal deadline is 23 June 2009.

2. Biomedical Research Scholarships: Kidney Health Australia provides scholarships for individuals wishing to study full time for the research degrees of PhD or MD and Masters by research, by undertaking research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidney. The amount of the scholarship stipend will range from $28,000 (Science) to $33,000 (Medical), depending on the qualifications the applicant holds and duration of study, for a period of up to 2 years for a Masters by Research, and up to 3 years for a PhD degree. Applicants should have graduated, or be proposing to graduate in the current academic year. The internal deadline is 21 August 2009.

Cystic Fibrosis in Australia - Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust Grants

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program (Deadline Extended)

The National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program is designed to foster wide collaboration between groups of investigators and pooling of knowledge, expertise and resources to enable larger scale or accelerated research programs into the prevention, causes, treatment or management of breast cancer.

Funding will now be made available in two stages:
Stage 1: up to $1 million dollars, per annum, for 3 years (Years 1-3).
Stage 2: up to $1 million per annum for an additional two years (Years 4 and 5).  Provision of Stage 2 funding will be dependent on satisfactory completion of Stage 1 research and the availability of funds.

Speech Pathology Australia - Nadia Verrall Memorial Research Grant

The Australian Rotary Health - Mental Health Research Grants

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) - Research Program

The PCFA recognizes that current strategies for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer are inadequate. Progress in the management of prostate cancer requires research as well as measures to make scientifically-rigorous clinical trials accessible to patients with prostate cancer.

PCFA Grant Categories:

1. Young Investigator Grants: To support young scientists beginning a career in prostate cancer research.
2. Concept Grants: For senior scientists not currently working in prostate cancer who have an innovative proposals and are seeking startup funding.
3. Project Grants: For general proposals for prostate cancer research, including support for innovative clinical trials.
4. Equipment Grants: For significant items of equipment needed to progress ongoing prostate cancer research.

The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme

The program related primarily to health problems using beer additives which initially arose in Canada and the United States. The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme (AHRGS) aims to provide financial support for independent research in the area of Alcohol and Health.

Value of the fund is up to $35,000. The grants are available to post-graduate researchers on a competitive basis. The key objective of the AHRGS is to help build capacity among young researchers in the early stages of their career.

Ramaciotti Foundation - General Awards

Internal Deadline

Applications are invited for two types of gifts only Establishment Grants and Equipment Grants. Establishment Gifts are intended to provide short term research support for a young investigator who is taking or has taken up a new position in an institution. The gift can be used for any combination of personnel, equipment, consumables or other expenses, but not for overseas travel.

Equipment applications may be made for a contribution towards the purchase of a single item of equipment costing $100,000 or more. Preference will be given to applications for an item of equipment that is to be used on various projects by a number of investigators within a department or institution or by investigators from other institutions working on collaborative projects. Preference will also be given to applications that demonstrate that such a gift from the foundations towards the cost of an expensive item would by providing leverage assist in the raising of the balance of funds required.

The Establishment gift maximum total amount is $30,000. Major Equipment applications may be made for a contribution of $30,000.

Establishment Gift applicants must have a minimum of two and a maximum of five years' cumulative postdoctoral experience as at January 1, 2009. The applicant must be the sole chief investigator of the proposed project and be in or commencing in a full-time position with a tenure for a minimum of three years and that will terminate no earlier than December 31, 2010. All applicants must be able to commence the project no later than July 1, 2009.

Australian Diabetes Society (ADS): ADS - Servier Diabetes Grants in Memory of Barry Young

Grants will be awarded for clinical projects that involve improvement of patient care consistent with the aims of the National Service Improvement Framework for Diabetes as paraphrased below:

1. Prevent and limit the progression of diabetes Slow the onset of complications
2. Reduce preventable hospital admissions
3. Reduce variations in care between clinicians and health services, across metropolitan, rural and remote settings and in care provided to disadvantaged groups
4. Preference will be given to projects with potential applicability to diabetes care throughout Australia.

The value of the grants will vary depending on need but it is anticipated that the average grant will be for $20,000. Three to five grants will be awarded in this round.

Brain Foundation - 2009 Research Grants

Canine Research Foundation - Research Grants

The Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG) - R.M.Gibson Research Grants

African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) - Victor Rothschild Fellowships

AIMS specially encourage African PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working overseas to apply for Victor Rothschild fellowships to help them establish contacts with African scientists, students and teachers across the continent.

AIMS will cover full travel, accommodation and subsistence costs for the selected Victor Rothschild fellows. A research lab will be available and the fellows will receive a small stipend to cover incidental costs. Fellows will be encouraged to participate in the AIMS teaching program, and to use the AIMS facilities including computer laboratory and library, to conduct scientific research during their stay

Arthritis Australia - Fellowships & Scholarships

Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.

1. Fellowships: The Heald Fellowship is available for research programs both overseas and in Australia. Please note that this is for one year only and there will be no renewals, except in rare circumstances e.g. part-time research.

2. Scholarships: Arthritis Australia offers scholarships for young science and medical graduates to undertake thesis studies into arthritis and related disorders at recognised universities. These scholarships provide research training to doctorate or masters level and are designed to develop the intellectual and technical expertise required for a career involving laboratory and clinical investigation. Scholarships are intended, in general, to support basic and clinical research training within Australian research units and as a precursor to more advanced study in Australia and overseas. Scholarships are for one year and are renewable for three years, depending on progress and funding priorities.

The Myer Foundation's current priority areas are:

The 2009 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry are open to Australians aged 18 to 35 who work or study in primary industries.  There are thirteen awards of $20,000 available, with one award winner also receiving an additional $30,000 as the recipient of the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry’s Award.  Awards can be used for a range of activities including research projects, industry visits or attending conferences.

The Norman Wettenhall Foundation - Foundation Grants

Australian Antarctic Science applications 2010/11 - Applications Open

Internal Deadline

Australian Antarctic Science applications for the 2010/11 season are now open. In 2010/11:

1. A special focus is writing-up projects and finalising data sets from research undertaken within the International Polar Year and the current Science Strategy.
2. Multidisciplinary projects offering a synthetic approach to data analysis are particularly encouraged.

The total grant funds available to Australian University researchers is $750,000 (check eligibility). Grants up to $30,000 are available for individual projects. Multidisciplinary projects may seek up to $60,000 but applicants need to seek approval from the Chief Scientist prior to applying.

Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) – Postdoctoral Fellowships

Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) awards Postdoctoral Fellowships to enable young scientists with appropriate research experience to undertake independent research relevant to MS. In a unique partnership arrangement, the National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) have agreed to jointly fund a number of Fellowships.

The Australian - American Fulbright Commission - Fulbright Symposium

The Australian - American Fulbright Commission will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its programs for educational and cultural exchange between Australia and the United States in 2010, and will offer a grant of $30,000 to an organisation selected to host the special Fulbright 60th Anniversary Symposium.

The Fulbright Symposium is to be held between 1st March and 30th September 2010 and will be identified as the Fulbright 60th Anniversary Symposium in all publicity. The grant is a contribution towards the cost of organising the Symposium and may be applied to any cost elements at the discretion of the organisers.

The Group of Eight - Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme

The Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme aims to:

• foster research collaboration of the highest quality between Australian researchers from Go8 universities and German researchers.
• result in research outcomes and the exchange of skills and knowledge of mutual benefit to Australia and Germany.

The Go8 and the DAAD will each provide around 160,000 euros (AUD250,000) in 2010 and 2011 to support projects successful in the 2009 selection round. The German researchers must apply through DAAD and the Australian researchers apply through the Go8. Exchange participants must either be employed as academic staff members in a teaching and research or research only role at a Go8 university, or a PhD student involved in the research project submitted by an eligible staff member.

US Department of Defense: Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs - Gulf War Illness Research Program (Pre-applications)

The Department of Defense Gulf War Illness Research Program (GWIRP) has released the three program announcements described below.

1) The Investigator-Initiated Research Awards: support research focusing on the complex of symptoms known as Gulf War Illness, improving its diagnosis, and better understanding its pathobiology.

2) The Innovative Treatment Evaluation Awards (New): provide support for the systematic evaluation of innovative treatment interventions not previously studied in Gulf War veterans, with the aim of improving their health and functional status.

3) The GWIRP Clinical Trial Awards: support rapid execution of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the health and lives of veterans with GWI.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) - Funding Oppotunities

Internal Deadline

1. High Priority, Short-Term Bridge Award: The High Priority, Short-Term Bridge Awards will each provide up to USD 55,000 annually, including indirect costs, for up to one year. This award will provide one year of funding for research grant applications that address a high priority research area for JDRF and scored within 10% of the funding payline for a review cycle of a research funding agency up to a year prior to the request to JDRF. The goal of this “bridge” funding is to help investigators generate additional supporting data for an amended, competitive application. The internal closing date is 24 June 2009.

2. Regular Research Grants: The purpose of the Regular Research Grant mechanism is to provide investigators with support to explore the feasibility and development of proposals that are considered to be on the leading edge of diabetes research and that address the JDRF research emphasis areas. Proposals that have the potential to impact the current state of diabetes research or that clearly lead to avenues of therapeutic benefit are major considerations for the Regular Research Grant. JDRF Regular Research Grants will be supported for a maximum of USD 165,000 total costs per year for a period of up to 3 years. The internal closing date is 8 July 2009.

3. Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship: The Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship program is designed to attract qualified and promising health scientists, to provide an opportunity to receive full time research training, and to assist these promising individuals in transitioning from a fellowship to an independent (faculty-level) position. The fellowships are intended for those in a relatively early stage of their career. Awards will be made for a duration of up to 3 years, assuming satisfactory progress. The fellowship term is 12 months for each fellowship year, and fellows must devote 75 percent of their effort to the project outlined in the application. Budgets up to USD 90,000 per year for up to 3 years may be requested. The internal closing date is 8 July 2009.

4. Career Development Award: The primary purpose of the Career Development Award is to attract qualified and promising scientists early in their faculty careers and to give them the opportunity to establish themselves in areas that reflect the JDRF research emphasis areas. The Career Development Award is intended for individuals in a relatively early stage of their career. The award is up to USD 150,000 per year, including indirect costs. The internal closing date is 8 July 2009.

5. Innovative Grant: JDRF provides “seed” funding for highly innovative research with potential significant impact on accelerating the mission of JDRF. The innovative research should have the potential for a change in the current paradigm or conventional wisdom or to lead to a seminal discovery or to be groundbreaking. These grants provide one year of support for a maximum of $100,000 in direct costs and indirect costs of 10%, for a total of $110,000. These grants are not renewable. The internal closing date is 8 July 2009.

Mary Philippa Brazill Foundation - Grants for Research in Education and Ethics

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) - Research Grants Opportunities

Internal Deadlines

AFSP offers six types of research grants:

1. Linked Standard Research Grants: for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.

2. Young Investigator Grants: for up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator’s research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.

3. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. The Wenner - Gren Foundation: International Collaborative Research Grants

The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills to the project.

Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication. By encouraging international collaborations, the grant contributes to the development of an international anthropology that values and incorporates different national perspectives and resources. By providing training funds, the grant helps to build capacity in countries were anthropology may be under-resourced. Each researcher must hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification in anthropology or a related discipline.

The grants are for a maximum of US$30,000 for the research project.

The Leakey Foundation - General Research Grants (Pre-Application)

The Leakey Foundation was formed to further research into human origins. Recent priorities include research into the environment, archeology and human paleontology; into the behavior, morphology, and ecology of the great apes and other primate species; and into the behavioral ecology of contemporary hunter-gatherers. The majority of the Foundation's General Research Grants to doctoral students are in the $3,000-to a maximum of $13,500 range; the limit of funding for a single proposal submitted by a post-doctoral applicant or a senior scientist is $22,000.

World Anti-Doping Agency - Social Science Research Grant Program

WADA invites applications for its Social Science Research Grant Program. For the 2009 program, WADA has identified the following three categories of projects:

1. Increasing knowledge of causes of doping behaviour and of risk and protective factors

The National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program, an initiative of the National Geographic Society and the Waitt Institute for Discovery, helps qualified and experienced individuals launch the most difficult stage of a project for which to secure funding—the search. The Catherine Helen Spence Memorial Scholarship 2009

UNESCO - L'Oréal: Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme for Young Women in Life Sciences

Within the framework of the UNESCO Co-Sponsored Fellowships Scheme, a joint programme has been launched with the L'Oréal Corporate Foundation with a view to promoting the contribution of young women - from all over the world - in research developments in the field of life sciences.

Candidates must already be engaged in pursuing research at the doctoral or post-doctoral level in one or allied fields of life sciences including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and physiology.
