Australia - Germany research network: German researchers in Australia survey 2009

Internal Deadline


DAAD would appreciate to increase the quality of information and consider providing additional support to further develop exchanges between Germany and Australia. In order to consolidate and extend the Germany-Australia research network, DAAD needs to better profile the size of the population of German nationals teaching or conducting research in Australia.

FEAST and DAAD, are jointly asking our membership and the widest possible audience to complete a simple survey for all German citizens or residents currently working in Australia who are:
- Lecturers/scientists/academics
- Teach in the fields of German languages  and cultures
- Conduct research in any discipline (Natural sciences, Humanities, Social sciences)

2009 SA Science Excellence Awards

External Deadline

The SA Government support the South Australian Science Excellence Awards as a means to highlight the diversity of scientific research in this State, and facilitate a better understanding of the ways in which research is linked to the development of new technologies and products.

Researchers are encouraged to nominate for these prestigious awards. Awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • South Australian Scientist of the Year: One will be awarded receiving prize money to the value of $50,000.

  • South Australian Young Tall Poppy of the Year: One will be awarded receiving prize money to the value of $15,000.

  • Excellence in Research: One will be awarded in each category receiving prize money to the value of $10,000.

Defence Capability and Technology Demonstrator Program

Australian Rotary Health Research Fund - Pilot project on young Australians with mental health

Internal Deadline


Applications are sought for one-year research "Pilot" projects investigating the mental health of young Australians. This new offer is the only funding available for mental health research grants in 2010. The total budget for one year of funding must not exceed $35,000. Applications requesting more than $35,000 will not be considered.

Applicants must be an Australian citizen or have Permanent Resident Status and not be under bond to any foreign government. Applicants are to provide, where appropriate, evidence of resident status.

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) - Research Program

The PCFA recognizes that current strategies for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer are inadequate. Progress in the management of prostate cancer requires research as well as measures to make scientifically-rigorous clinical trials accessible to patients with prostate cancer.

PCFA Grant Categories:

1. Young Investigator Grants: To support young scientists beginning a career in prostate cancer research.
2. Concept Grants: For senior scientists not currently working in prostate cancer who have an innovative proposals and are seeking startup funding.
3. Project Grants: For general proposals for prostate cancer research, including support for innovative clinical trials.
4. Equipment Grants: For significant items of equipment needed to progress ongoing prostate cancer research.

Myer Foundation - Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program

Internal Deadline


The current priority areas for the Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program are as follows:

  • Communities experiencing social and economic exclusion with particular emphasis on Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers and refugees, and people living in isolated
  • rural and remote areas of Australia
  • Children and young people from impoverished backgrounds whose opportunities for development and advancement are curtailed
  • Small, discreet projects that meet the needs of a community rather than supplementary funding for large projects. A small, discreet project will be considered to have a total budget of up to $50,000.
Grants are capped at $10,000, and are made for a one-year period only. The requested amount may be part of a budget of up to $50,000. Only one application can be considered per applicant. This includes applications submitted to another funding area of The Myer Foundation or the Sidney Myer Fund. Exceptions are made when multiple applications are received from universities and other large organisations where they represent different faculties, departments or schools, and the proposals are unrelated.

Asia - Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect: Call for Applications

Internal Deadline


The Asia-Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect is calling for applications for support under the Australian Responsibility to Protect Fund from research institutions and non-governmental organisations that have a demonstrated capacity to produce high quality research or programs of work. Applications should focus on either one of two Priority Themes:

  • Advancing the Responsibility to Protect concept.
  • Supporting States to build capacity to protect populations and prevent genocide and mass atrocities.

Applicants can apply for funding between $25,000 and $100,000 per year over the course of the research project or program of work for up to two years.

National Archives of Australia - Research Grants

Internal Deadline


A key function of the National Archives is to promote archival research in Australia and encourage scholarly use of the National Archives collection.

The National Archives offers a range of research grants for advanced research and professional development:

1. Margaret George Award for talented, emerging scholars – up to $10,000
2. Frederick Watson Fellowship for established scholars – up to $15,000
3. Ian Maclean Award for archivists and other professionals who are interested in archival issues – up to $15,000

Awards and Fellowships are designed to help scholars complete an innovative and quality research project that:

  • is significant for Australian audiences
  • makes substantial use of the National Archives collection
  • produces as its outcome: articles, a book, website, exhibition, film or event to promote the National Archives collection

Australian Academy of Science - European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST)

Applications are now being received for travel between 1 July 2009 and 30 June 2010 (FY 2009-2010). Funding is available to support up to twelve visits during the FY. Applications are assessed on a first-come first–serve basis. The Australian Academy of Science receives funding from the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) to deliver the project Australian participation in European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST). The objectives of the ISL program are to:

  • Increase the uptake of leading edge science and technology (S&T) through:
  • promoting access to and participation by Australian researchers in strategically focussed, leading edge, international scientific research and technology; and
  • increased strategic alliances between Australian and overseas researchers.
  • Facilitate Australia's access to the global S&T system by supporting bilateral and multilateral relations with other countries.

Funding is available to support up to twelve visits in FY 2009-2010 for Australian researchers to participate in COST Actions. Australian researchers need to be official members of a COST Action to be eligible for funding. This program does not fund students.

Australian researchers travelling to Europe may receive a grant in aid of up to A$5,000 for a STSM, covering a return airfare of up to A$2,500 and daily living allowances. Daily living allowances, covering accommodation and meals are provided at the rate of A$200 per day or a maximum of A$2,500 per month, whichever is the smaller amount.

French Australian Science and Technology (FAST) Program - Call for proposals Round Seven 2009

Internal Deadlines


The objective of FAST is to promote and support scientific and technological cooperation between Australian and French researchers from public and private institutions or enterprises.

Under the FAST program, Australia will contribute a total of up to $A 250,000 per round and France up to 150,000 € per round.

FAST will provide financial assistance, on a competitive basis, for collaborative research projects (including project specific follow-up meetings) between Australian and French researchers. Eligible activities for funding support are international travel and living expenses only. Accordingly, funding does not extend to insurance, salaries or equipment expenses. Individual applications may request funding for up to 2 years.

Under the FAST program Round Seven, applications will be considered for research collaboration in the areas of space sciences and astronomy, Materials and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT). Projects which include an environmental science component will be encouraged and assessed on merit along with all applications.

Psychology Beyond Borders (PBB) - 2010 PBB Mission Awards

Psychology Beyond Borders is seeking proposals for the 2010 PBB Mission Awards. Projects of $5,000 - $15,000 (USD) will be funded with an expected project duration of one year (beginning January 2010). Psychology Beyond Borders' Mission consists of five key areas:

1. Research
2. Psychosocial service delivery
3. Education
4. Public policy
5. Building a network

Psychology Beyond Borders seeks research and action-oriented projects that contribute to at least two of the five key areas of PBB's mission. Projects will be evaluated on the basis of how they contribute to the organization's mission and particularly key area # 1, research. Human Research Ethics Training Workshop

Dates Held


The Ethics Centre of South Australia, in collaboration with the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia, invites all HDR students and commencing researchers to attend the following workshop:
‘Ethics and Integrity in Research with Humans’

This interactive workshop will aim to give participants:

·  an understanding of the ethical issues that may arise in research involving human participants (across the full spectrum from biological samples to whole populations) applied during discipline specific workshops;
·  tools to analyse and address these issues;
·  an understanding of what constitutes good practice in research; and
·  assistance in the preparation of Human Research Ethics Committee applications. 

Current HDR students and commencing researchers who have research projects which require Human Ethics Approval are encouraged to attend this workshop. Please note that priority will be given to HDR students and therefore only a limited number of places are available to commencing researchers.

Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations - Indigenous Staff Scholarships

Internal Deadline


A strong and visible presence by Indigenous people in higher education reduces cultural isolation and heightens the potential for successful outcomes for Indigenous people studying or working in the higher education sector. Many Indigenous staff at Australia’s public higher education institutions are also leaders and mentors to Indigenous people contemplating or undertaking study, and the demands of this role may limit their professional development opportunities.

Five national scholarships are awarded annually, each providing approximately $12,000 (indexed annually) to cover tuition fees and/or student contribution amounts for that year, and a non-taxable stipend of approximately $24,200 for each scholarship holder (indexed annually).

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Early Career Fellowship

The aim of this award is to support the development of early career researchers with outstanding potential for a career in breast cancer research. NHMRC Program Grants
