Australia - Germany research network: German researchers in Australia survey 2009 |

DAAD would appreciate to increase the quality of information and consider providing additional support to further develop exchanges between Germany and Australia.
In order to consolidate and extend the Germany-Australia research network, DAAD needs to better profile the size of the population of German nationals teaching or conducting research in Australia.
FEAST and DAAD, are jointly asking our membership and the widest possible audience to complete a simple survey for all German citizens or residents currently working in Australia who are:
- Lecturers/scientists/academics
- Teach in the fields of German languages and cultures
- Conduct research in any discipline (Natural sciences, Humanities, Social sciences)

2009 SA Science Excellence Awards |

The SA Government support the South Australian Science Excellence Awards as a means to highlight the diversity of scientific research in this State, and facilitate a better understanding of the ways in which research is linked to the development of new technologies and products.
Researchers are encouraged to nominate for these prestigious awards. Awards will be presented in the following categories:
- South Australian Scientist of the Year:
One will be awarded receiving prize money to the value of $50,000.
- South Australian Young Tall Poppy of the Year:
One will be awarded receiving prize money to the value of $15,000.

Round 12 of the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) program has opened. Intending applicants will be required to complete the Expression of Interest form with the endorsement of relevant Heads and EDs in the first instance by 22 June 2009.

H1N1 Influenza 2009 (Human Swine Influenza) Research Funding - Expression of Interest |

The Australian Government, through the National Health and Research Council, will provide $7 million for research into the H1NI influenza 09 virus (human swine influenza).
The funds will help researchers learn more about the properties of the virus and its potential to become more virulent and how best to avoid and treat infection. This research will commence in June 2009 with results expected to be reported by December 2009. Researchers will focus on two areas:
1. Biology of the virus, including the progress of mutations, likely increase or decrease in virulence, susceptibility to antivirals, and the risk of combination with other influenza virus strains.
2.
Health care, including quarantining, effective population based use of antivirals, advice on public health measures and messages and the factors that put individuals at higher risk.

Leukaemia Foundation National Research Program - Call for applications 2010 |

In 2010, the Leukaemia Foundation is calling for innovative research applications for Grants-in-Aid, Fellowships and Scholarships. The Foundation is delighted to call for applications for 2010 for innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and related disorders, and the care of patients and families. The following grants are available:
1. Grants-in-aid ($50,000 - $100,000 for one year): The Leukaemia Foundation invites expressions of interest for grants-in-aid for research projects to support basic, applied and translational research in all fields of research which will improve outcomes for people with blood cancers and related disorders. Applicants are encouraged to develop innovative approaches to haematological problems, especially in the areas of basic or fundamental research. The internal deadline is 24 July 2009.
2. Philip Desbrow Senior Research Fellowship ($200,000/year for 5 years): This new and most prestigious award will provide sustained support for an outstanding young Scientist enabling them to establish a significant research program in an Australian research institute. One award will be made in 2010. This award will provide sustained support for an outstanding young researcher preferably between 3 and 10 years postdoctorate who has established an international reputation for research in the field of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood cancers and disorders. The internal deadline for expression of interest is 24 July 2009.
3. Post Doctoral Fellowship (Up to $100,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates must have been awarded their PhD no more than three years prior to the closing date for applications or else their PhD must be awarded by December of the year of application. The internal deadline is 24 July 2009.
4. PhD Scholarships ($40,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done. Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD. Successful applicants who have already commenced their PhD program will only be awarded a Leukaemia Foundation Scholarship for the balance of their study. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.
5. PhD Scholarships (Clinical) ($55,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done. Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.

Australian Rotary Health Research Fund - Pilot project on young Australians with mental health |

Applications are sought for one-year research "Pilot" projects investigating the mental health of young Australians. This new offer is the only funding available for mental health research grants in 2010. The total budget for one year of funding must not exceed $35,000. Applications requesting more than $35,000 will not be considered.
Applicants must be an Australian citizen or have Permanent Resident Status and not be under bond to any foreign government. Applicants are to provide, where appropriate, evidence of resident status.

Judith Jane Mason and Harold Stannett Williams Memorial Foundation - Research Grants for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Alzheimer’s Disease |

The goal of the Judith Jane Mason and Harold Stannett Williams Memorial Foundation (The Mason Foundation) is to achieve enduring, positive impact in the areas of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease through funding medical research principally into the causes, prevention and/or management of these diseases. There are two categories of grants open to applications for The Mason Foundation:
1.
Medical and Scientific Research Grants – Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Research into more effective diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, care or treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome; and/or Research into cures for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Projects will be funded for one year only and individual grants in the vicinity of $100,000 will be considered.
2. Medical and Scientific Research Grants – Alzheimer’s Disease: Research into more effective diagnosis, or treatment of Alzheimer’s disease; and/or Research into cures for Alzheimer’s disease. The Foundation will favourably consider applications for emerging research concepts requiring seed funding or young investigators being established. Projects will be funded for one year only and Individual grants of up to $50,000 will be considered.
Researchers in this area need lodge only one application in order to be considered by both trusts. The grants are made separately and will be acknowledged appropriately.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Australia: IELTS Joint - Funded Research 2009/10 |

Educational institutions and suitably qualified individuals are invited to apply for funding to undertake applied research projects in relation to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The IELTS Joint Research Committee is interested in supporting external researchers to conduct quality research under the three headings below. This year the committee would particularly encourage applications to undertake research studies which fit within these broad areas:
1. Test development and validation issues
2. Issues relating to contexts of test use
3. Issues of test impact
Consideration will also be given to other issues of current interest in relation to IELTS.
Financial support for individual projects selected will in principle be limited to a maximum of £15,000/AU$36,000 though this upper limit may be reviewed in exceptional circumstances.

Ramaciotti Foundation - General Awards |

Applications are invited for two types of gifts only Establishment Grants and Equipment Grants. Establishment Gifts are intended to provide short term research support for a young investigator who is taking or has taken up a new position in an institution. The gift can be used for any combination of personnel, equipment, consumables or other expenses, but not for overseas travel.
Equipment applications may be made for a contribution towards the purchase of a single item of equipment costing $100,000 or more. Preference will be given to applications for an item of equipment that is to be used on various projects by a number of investigators within a department or institution or by investigators from other institutions working on collaborative projects. Preference will also be given to applications that demonstrate that such a gift from the foundations towards the cost of an expensive item would by providing leverage assist in the raising of the balance of funds required.
The Establishment gift maximum total amount is $30,000. Major Equipment applications may be made for a contribution of $30,000.
Establishment Gift applicants must have a minimum of two and a maximum of five years' cumulative postdoctoral experience as at January 1, 2009. The applicant must be the sole chief investigator of the proposed project and be in or commencing in a full-time position with a tenure for a minimum of three years and that will terminate no earlier than December 31, 2010. All applicants must be able to commence the project no later than July 1, 2009.

The fiscal year 2009 Department of Defense, Bone Marrow Failure Research Program, $5 million appropriation, is offering the first of three funding mechanisms, the Bone Marrow Failure (BMFRP) Hypothesis Development Awards.
The Bone Marrow Failure Hypothesis Development Awards will support the initial exploration of innovative, untested, novel, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in bone marrow failure research. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rational upon which a new hypothesis can be based, or it should provide initial principles of an innovative hypothesis. Funding is available for a maximum period of performance is 18 months. Maximum allowable funding for the entire period of performance is $100,000. French Australian Science and Technology (FAST) Program -
Call for proposals Round Seven 2009 |

The objective of FAST is to promote and support scientific and technological cooperation between Australian and French researchers from public and private institutions or enterprises.
Under the FAST program, Australia will contribute a total of up to $A 250,000 per round and France up to 150,000 € per round.
FAST will provide financial assistance, on a competitive basis, for collaborative research projects (including project specific follow-up meetings) between Australian and French researchers. Eligible activities for funding support are international travel and living expenses only. Accordingly, funding does not extend to insurance, salaries or equipment expenses. Individual applications may request funding for up to 2 years.
Under the FAST program Round Seven, applications will be considered for research collaboration in the areas of space sciences and astronomy, Materials and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT). Projects which include an environmental science component will be encouraged and assessed on merit along with all applications.

American Tinnitus Association (ATA) - Research Grant Program |

The program financially supports scientific studies investigating tinnitus. Studies must be directly concerned with tinnitus and contribute to ATA's goal of finding a cure. ATA awards a maximum of US$300,000 at US$100,000 per year over three years.

The Ethics Centre of South Australia, in collaboration with the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia, invites all HDR students and commencing researchers to attend the following workshop:
‘Ethics and Integrity in Research with Humans’
This interactive workshop will aim to give participants:
· an understanding of the ethical issues that may arise in research involving human participants (across the full spectrum from biological samples to whole populations) applied during discipline specific workshops;
· tools to analyse and address these issues;
· an understanding of what constitutes good practice in research; and
· assistance in the preparation of Human Research Ethics Committee applications.
Current HDR students and commencing researchers who have research projects which require Human Ethics Approval are encouraged to attend this workshop. Please note that priority will be given to HDR students and therefore only a limited number of places are available to commencing researchers.

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) - Research Program |

The PCFA recognizes that current strategies for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer are inadequate. Progress in the management of prostate cancer requires research as well as measures to make scientifically-rigorous clinical trials accessible to patients with prostate cancer.
