H1N1 Influenza 2009 (Human Swine Influenza) Research Funding - Expression of Interest |

The Australian Government, through the National Health and Research Council, will provide $7 million for research into the H1NI influenza 09 virus (human swine influenza).
The funds will help researchers learn more about the properties of the virus and its potential to become more virulent and how best to avoid and treat infection. This research will commence in June 2009 with results expected to be reported by December 2009. Researchers will focus on two areas:
1. Biology of the virus, including the progress of mutations, likely increase or decrease in virulence, susceptibility to antivirals, and the risk of combination with other influenza virus strains.
2.
Health care, including quarantining, effective population based use of antivirals, advice on public health measures and messages and the factors that put individuals at higher risk.

Leukaemia Foundation National Research Program - Call for applications 2010 |

In 2010, the Leukaemia Foundation is calling for innovative research applications for Grants-in-Aid, Fellowships and Scholarships. The Foundation is delighted to call for applications for 2010 for innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and related disorders, and the care of patients and families. The following grants are available:
1. Grants-in-aid ($50,000 - $100,000 for one year): The Leukaemia Foundation invites expressions of interest for grants-in-aid for research projects to support basic, applied and translational research in all fields of research which will improve outcomes for people with blood cancers and related disorders. Applicants are encouraged to develop innovative approaches to haematological problems, especially in the areas of basic or fundamental research. The internal deadline is 24 July 2009.
2. Philip Desbrow Senior Research Fellowship ($200,000/year for 5 years): This new and most prestigious award will provide sustained support for an outstanding young Scientist enabling them to establish a significant research program in an Australian research institute. One award will be made in 2010. This award will provide sustained support for an outstanding young researcher preferably between 3 and 10 years postdoctorate who has established an international reputation for research in the field of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood cancers and disorders. The internal deadline for expression of interest is 24 July 2009.
3. Post Doctoral Fellowship (Up to $100,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates must have been awarded their PhD no more than three years prior to the closing date for applications or else their PhD must be awarded by December of the year of application. The internal deadline is 24 July 2009.
4. PhD Scholarships ($40,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done. Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD. Successful applicants who have already commenced their PhD program will only be awarded a Leukaemia Foundation Scholarship for the balance of their study. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.
5. PhD Scholarships (Clinical) ($55,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done. Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.

Australian Rotary Health Research Fund - Pilot project on young Australians with mental health |

Applications are sought for one-year research "Pilot" projects investigating the mental health of young Australians. This new offer is the only funding available for mental health research grants in 2010. The total budget for one year of funding must not exceed $35,000. Applications requesting more than $35,000 will not be considered.
Applicants must be an Australian citizen or have Permanent Resident Status and not be under bond to any foreign government. Applicants are to provide, where appropriate, evidence of resident status.

Judith Jane Mason and Harold Stannett Williams Memorial Foundation - Research Grants for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Alzheimer’s Disease |

The goal of the Judith Jane Mason and Harold Stannett Williams Memorial Foundation (The Mason Foundation) is to achieve enduring, positive impact in the areas of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease through funding medical research principally into the causes, prevention and/or management of these diseases. There are two categories of grants open to applications for The Mason Foundation:
1.
Medical and Scientific Research Grants – Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Research into more effective diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, care or treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome; and/or Research into cures for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Projects will be funded for one year only and individual grants in the vicinity of $100,000 will be considered.
2. Medical and Scientific Research Grants – Alzheimer’s Disease: Research into more effective diagnosis, or treatment of Alzheimer’s disease; and/or Research into cures for Alzheimer’s disease. The Foundation will favourably consider applications for emerging research concepts requiring seed funding or young investigators being established. Projects will be funded for one year only and Individual grants of up to $50,000 will be considered.
Researchers in this area need lodge only one application in order to be considered by both trusts. The grants are made separately and will be acknowledged appropriately.

Ramaciotti Foundation - General Awards |

Applications are invited for two types of gifts only Establishment Grants and Equipment Grants. Establishment Gifts are intended to provide short term research support for a young investigator who is taking or has taken up a new position in an institution. The gift can be used for any combination of personnel, equipment, consumables or other expenses, but not for overseas travel.
Equipment applications may be made for a contribution towards the purchase of a single item of equipment costing $100,000 or more. Preference will be given to applications for an item of equipment that is to be used on various projects by a number of investigators within a department or institution or by investigators from other institutions working on collaborative projects. Preference will also be given to applications that demonstrate that such a gift from the foundations towards the cost of an expensive item would by providing leverage assist in the raising of the balance of funds required.
The Establishment gift maximum total amount is $30,000. Major Equipment applications may be made for a contribution of $30,000.
Establishment Gift applicants must have a minimum of two and a maximum of five years' cumulative postdoctoral experience as at January 1, 2009. The applicant must be the sole chief investigator of the proposed project and be in or commencing in a full-time position with a tenure for a minimum of three years and that will terminate no earlier than December 31, 2010. All applicants must be able to commence the project no later than July 1, 2009.

Arthritis Australia - Grants In Aid and Project Grants 2010 |

Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.
Grants are typically for short-term projects with well defined aims that can be achieved within a 12 month period. The amount allocated is generally in the range of $10,000 - $15,000 per grant for new investigator grants. A maximum of four project grants valued up to $50,000 will be available, including grants focusing on rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Selection is by review process. It is expected that an explicit, justified budget will be provided as part of your application.

Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia Inc - Research Grants 2010 |

Researchers working in Australia in fields that are relevant to motor neurone disease are invited to apply for
funding to support research in the calendar year 2010.
1. Grants-in-Aid for research into motor neurone disease in 2010: Applications for projects in biomedical and health care research are encouraged. A
range of grants, including the named grants below, are offered. In recent years, grants-in-aid have ranged
from $15,000 to $35,000 with an average of around $25,000.
2. Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010 - 2012): The Fellowships of the MND Research Institute of Australia aim to encourage young researchers to focus
their interest on MND.
The Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record in
areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease. Salary will be funded for up to three years at
$72,500 per year.

Kidney Health Australia - Medical Research Funding Program (Seeding Grants) |

The Kidney Health Australia Medical Research Funding Program provides funding annually to kidney related research projects.
1. Seeding Grants: Kidney Health Australia provides funding for seeding grants of up to $15,000 per year (or more depending on MSAC consideration) for up to an optional maximum of two years for research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidneys and urinary tract.
The application should be for a genuinely new research idea. Preferred ranking will be given to applicants in the early stages of their research career applying for the first time as Chief Investigator.
The grants will be for biomedical research work to be carried out by Australians in Australia. The internal deadline is 23 June 2009.
2. Biomedical Research Scholarships: Kidney Health Australia provides scholarships for individuals wishing to study full time for the research degrees of PhD or MD and Masters by research, by undertaking research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidney. The amount of the scholarship stipend will range from $28,000 (Science) to $33,000 (Medical), depending on the qualifications the applicant holds and duration of study, for a period of up to 2 years for a Masters by Research, and up to 3 years for a PhD degree. Applicants should have graduated, or be proposing to graduate in the current academic year. The internal deadline is 21 August 2009.

Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.
1. Fellowships: The Heald Fellowship is available for research programs both overseas and in Australia. Please note that this is for one year only and there will be no renewals, except in rare circumstances e.g. part-time research.
2. Scholarships: Arthritis Australia offers scholarships for young science and medical graduates to undertake thesis studies into arthritis and related disorders at recognised universities. These scholarships provide research training to doctorate or masters level and are designed to develop the intellectual and technical expertise required for a career involving laboratory and clinical investigation. Myer Foundation - Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program |

The current priority areas for the Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program are as follows:
- Communities experiencing social and economic exclusion with particular emphasis on Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers and refugees, and people living in isolated
- rural and remote areas of Australia
- Children and young people from impoverished backgrounds whose opportunities for development and advancement are curtailed
- Small, discreet projects that meet the needs of a community rather than supplementary funding for large projects. A small, discreet project will be considered to have a total budget of up to $50,000.

Applications are now being received for travel between 1 July 2009 and 30 June 2010 (FY 2009-2010). Funding is available to support up to twelve visits during the FY. Applications are assessed on a first-come first–serve basis. The Australian Academy of Science receives funding from the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) to deliver the project Australian participation in European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST). The objectives of the ISL program are to:
- Increase the uptake of leading edge science and technology (S&T) through:
- promoting access to and participation by Australian researchers in strategically focussed, leading edge, international scientific research and technology; and
- increased strategic alliances between Australian and overseas researchers.
- Facilitate Australia's access to the global S&T system by supporting bilateral and multilateral relations with other countries.
Funding is available to support up to twelve visits in FY 2009-2010 for Australian researchers to participate in COST Actions. Australian researchers need to be official members of a COST Action to be eligible for funding. This program does not fund students.
Australian researchers travelling to Europe may receive a grant in aid of up to A$5,000 for a STSM, covering a return airfare of up to A$2,500 and daily living allowances. Daily living allowances, covering accommodation and meals are provided at the rate of A$200 per day or a maximum of A$2,500 per month, whichever is the smaller amount.

1. High Priority, Short-Term Bridge Award: The High Priority, Short-Term Bridge Awards will each provide up to USD 55,000 annually, including indirect costs, for up to one year. This award will provide one year of funding for research grant applications that address a high priority research area for JDRF and scored within 10% of the funding payline for a review cycle of a research funding agency up to a year prior to the request to JDRF. The goal of this “bridge” funding is to help investigators generate additional supporting data for an amended, competitive application. The internal closing date is 24 June 2009.
2. Regular Research Grants: The purpose of the Regular Research Grant mechanism is to provide investigators with support to explore the feasibility and development of proposals that are considered to be on the leading edge of diabetes research and that address the JDRF research emphasis areas. Proposals that have the potential to impact the current state of diabetes research or that clearly lead to avenues of therapeutic benefit are major considerations for the Regular Research Grant. JDRF Regular Research Grants will be supported for a maximum of USD 165,000 total costs per year for a period of up to 3 years. The internal closing date is 8 July 2009.
3. Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship: The Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship program is designed to attract qualified and promising health scientists, to provide an opportunity to receive full time research training, and to assist these promising individuals in transitioning from a fellowship to an independent (faculty-level) position. The fellowships are intended for those in a relatively early stage of their career. Awards will be made for a duration of up to 3 years, assuming satisfactory progress. The fellowship term is 12 months for each fellowship year, and fellows must devote 75 percent of their effort to the project outlined in the application. Budgets up to USD 90,000 per year for up to 3 years may be requested. The internal closing date is 8 July 2009.
4. Career Development Award: The primary purpose of the Career Development Award is to attract qualified and promising scientists early in their faculty careers and to give them the opportunity to establish themselves in areas that reflect the JDRF research emphasis areas. The Career Development Award is intended for individuals in a relatively early stage of their career. The award is up to USD 150,000 per year, including indirect costs. The internal closing date is 8 July 2009.
5. Innovative Grant: JDRF provides “seed” funding for highly innovative research with potential significant impact on accelerating the mission of JDRF. The innovative research should have the potential for a change in the current paradigm or conventional wisdom or to lead to a seminal discovery or to be groundbreaking. These grants provide one year of support for a maximum of $100,000 in direct costs and indirect costs of 10%, for a total of $110,000. These grants are not renewable. AFSP offers six types of research grants:
1. Linked Standard Research Grants: for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.
2. Young Investigator Grants: for up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator’s research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.
3. The Wenner - Gren Foundation: International Collaborative Research Grants |

The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills to the project.
Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication. Within the framework of the UNESCO Co-Sponsored Fellowships Scheme, a joint programme has been launched with the L'Oréal Corporate Foundation with a view to promoting the contribution of young women - from all over the world - in research developments in the field of life sciences.
Candidates must already be engaged in pursuing research at the doctoral or post-doctoral level in one or allied fields of life sciences including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and physiology. Projects involving animal models (i.e. experimentation using vertebrate laboratory animals) are rejected, and proposals in the area of cosmetics research are NOT encouraged; preference is given to non cosmetic research.

Highly qualified scientists of any discipline who could contribute to the scientific development of an Austrian research institution by working at it. The Lise Meitner Program is designed:
1. to enable highly qualified researchers from abroad to work at Austrian research facilities and participate in Austrian research programs for the benefit of and to stimulate research in Austria;
2. to introduce into Austria new scientific fields, to establish new scientific approaches, methods, processes and techniques, to exploit newly gained know-how for Austrian science and to provide a lasting strengthening of the host institute's scientific quality based on the applicant's scientific expertise;
3. to promote cooperation between Austrian scientists and the home countries of Lise Meitner Scientists upon their return.

Through its Research awards, UFAW aims to encourage high quality research that is likely to lead to substantial improvements in animal welfare. UFAW seeks to promote both fundamental research aimed at providing new insight into the subjective mental experiences of animals relevant to their welfare and at understanding their needs and preferences, and also to promote applied research aimed at developing practical solutions to animal welfare problems. UFAW is concerned with the welfare of farm, companion, laboratory, and captive wild animals and with free-living wild animals whose welfare is compromised by humans.

Through its Small Projects and Travel awards (up to £3,500), UFAW supports a variety of activities for the benefit of animal welfare. The Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award recognises distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to psychology by psychologists at mid or later career stages. The contribution may lead to the understanding or amelioration of an important practical problem.
