Consultation Paper on NHMRC’s Research Fellowships Scheme

NHMRC’s Research Fellowship scheme, in place now for decades, has been an outstanding success. Many of Australia’s current and past research stars have been supported through the scheme and NHMRC remains strongly committed to it.

On the 25 May 2009, NHMRC Research Committee launched a consultation process which raises a number of questions and issues for comment and input from the research and wider community in the Consultation Paper on NHMRC’s Research Fellowship Scheme.

Call for research on H1N1 Influenza 2009 - Additional Information Released

NHMRC is calling for public health and medical research proposals that aim to rapidly inform and advance Australian strategies to prevent, prepare for and respond to a potential H1N1 Influenza pandemic and inform the development of public policy: http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/grants/types/granttype/

A total of up to $7 million has been set aside by NHMRC to fund the best research that addresses needs that are not already being covered through other means.

NHMRC is therefore calling for research to be conducted over the current Australian influenza season, to better understand the biology of the virus and its impact on public health in order to inform public policy development.

Arthritis Australia - Grants In Aid and Project Grants 2010

Internal Deadline


Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.

Grants are typically for short-term projects with well defined aims that can be achieved within a 12 month period. The amount allocated is generally in the range of $10,000 - $15,000 per grant for new investigator grants. A maximum of four project grants valued up to $50,000 will be available, including grants focusing on rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Selection is by review process. It is expected that an explicit, justified budget will be provided as part of your application.

Retina Australia - Research Grants

Internal Deadline


Retina Australia provides funds, raised by public donation all over Australia, for research scientists to undertake an area of study which can further the body of knowledge about the causes, treatments and possible cures for inherited retinal diseases. Retina Australia grant will not normally exceed $40,000 in any one year but special consideration may be given to extending this limit to $60,000 in the case of a highly ranked application.

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation (HFG) - Research Grants in the Natural and Social Sciences and the Humanities

Internal Deadline


The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation (HFG) welcomes proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence, aggression, and dominance. Particular questions that interest HFG concern violence, aggression, and dominance in relation to social change, the socialization of children, intergroup conflict, interstate warfare, crime, family relationships, and investigations of the control of aggression and violence. Priority will also be given to areas and methodologies not receiving adequate attention and support from other funding sources.

HFG awards research grants to individuals for individual projects and does not award grants to institutions for institutional programs. Awards in the range of US$15,000 to $30,000 a year for periods of one or two years.

The Australian Academy of Science - Award for Conservation of Endangered Australian Veterbrate Species

Internal Deadline


This award offers support for research on endangered Australian vertebrate species (endangered either locally or nationally) with the objective of understanding the causes of their decline and with a view to instituting, or improving, the management of the conditions necessary for the species' recovery.

A total of $20,000 is available for allocation to one or more than one grant. Preference will be given to independent research workers whose research is not funded, or only partially funded, by a university or other institution. Applicants undertaking Masters and particularly PhD studies should ensure that their application identifies clearly the discreet aspect or research component of that larger study for which they are seeking funding support from this award. Successful applicants will be required to give evidence of appropriate Ethics Committee approval.

Sugar Research & Development Corporation (SRDC) - Research Projects

SRDC is calling for researchers to submit research and development proposals for projects commencing from July 2010. SRDC are prepared to invest in bright new ideas and innovative R&D projects from anywhere in the world, which will deliver significant benefits to the Australian community and sugarcane industry.

Research proposals should target one of the following:

1. Mitigating risks of climate change, and facilitating adaptation to climate change and variability.
2. Delivering opportunities for the sugarcane industry in energy, biomass utilisation and product diversification.
3. Reducing production costs and/or improving the utilisation of capital and other resources for cane farming, harvesting and milling.
4. Increasing uptake of improved technologies and improving decision-making by industry enterprises.
5. Developing improved sugarcane varieties
6. Reducing risks of exotic biosecurity threats, and improving management of endemic pests and weeds, including risks enhanced by climate change.

Expressions of Interest applications will need to be submitted online using the SRDC application centre by Friday 14 August 2009 (external). Susan G. Komen for the Cure - Prevention Promise Grants (Pre-Application)

Prevention Promise Grants seek to support integrated programs of collaborative and cross-disciplinary research projects leading to the aggressive translation of scientific discoveries into interventions and strategies that have the greatest potential to significantly reduce breast cancer incidence, defined here in terms of the prevention of primary breast cancers in previously asymptomatic women or prevention of second primary breast cancers in women with a previous history of cancer.

Proposals seeking to prevent breast cancer recurrence would not be within the scope of this RFA. These grants seek to remove current roadblocks to development and clinical translation of effective prevention interventions.

Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (MSRA) – Ian Ballard Travel Fellowship Award

The goals of the MSRA Ian Ballard Travel Fellowship are to give young scientist the opportunity to:

1. Meet and deliberate with research leaders in their research speciality
2. Learn new techniques that can be brought back to Australia
3. Establish relationships with key scientists

Australian Academy of the Humanities - Travelling Fellowships

Internal Deadline


Fellowships of up to $4,000 each, they are intended to allow early-career humanities researchers to travel overseas for short periods (not less than two weeks) to access materials in connection with their research. This Programme also incorporates:

1. The Ernst Keller Travelling Fellowships (for travel to European countries to conduct research in European topics or studies – early career researchers and researchers in German studies; however, researchers in other European topics are eligible for the Fellowship and are welcome to apply).

2. The French Embassy in Australia Travelling Fellowships (for travel to France in order to gain access to resources held in French institutions), these are jointly funded by the French Embassy in Australia and the Academy.

Australian Academy of Science - Graeme Caughley Travelling Fellowship

The purpose of the Fellowship is to enable ecologists resident in Australia or New Zealand to share their expertise by visiting scientific centres and giving lectures in countries other than Australia or New Zealand. The Fellowship is offered every two years. Up to $5000 (GST exempt) is offered.

2010 Australian Fulbright Scholarships - Applications Open

Valued at up to $A50,000, Fulbright scholarships are open to Australian citizens to undertake research or study in the United States for 3 – 12 months. Scholarships can be started between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2011.

As the largest and one of the most prestigious educational scholarship programs in the world, Fulbright provides unique opportunities for Australians to build long term research collaboration and linkages with U.S. universities.

French Australian Science and Technology (FAST) Program - Call for proposals Round Seven 2009

Internal Deadlines


The objective of FAST is to promote and support scientific and technological cooperation between Australian and French researchers from public and private institutions or enterprises.

Under the FAST program, Australia will contribute a total of up to $A 250,000 per round and France up to 150,000 € per round.

FAST will provide financial assistance, on a competitive basis, for collaborative research projects (including project specific follow-up meetings) between Australian and French researchers. Eligible activities for funding support are international travel and living expenses only. Accordingly, funding does not extend to insurance, salaries or equipment expenses. Individual applications may request funding for up to 2 years.

Under the FAST program Round Seven, applications will be considered for research collaboration in the areas of space sciences and astronomy, Materials and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT). Projects which include an environmental science component will be encouraged and assessed on merit along with all applications.

A key function of the National Archives is to promote archival research in Australia and encourage scholarly use of the National Archives collection.

The National Archives offers a range of research grants for advanced research and professional development:

1. Margaret George Award for talented, emerging scholars – up to $10,000
2. Frederick Watson Fellowship for established scholars – up to $15,000

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) - Research Program

The PCFA recognizes that current strategies for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer are inadequate. Progress in the management of prostate cancer requires research as well as measures to make scientifically-rigorous clinical trials accessible to patients with prostate cancer.

PCFA Grant Categories:

1. Young Investigator Grants: To support young scientists beginning a career in prostate cancer research.
2. Concept Grants: For senior scientists not currently working in prostate cancer who have an innovative proposals and are seeking startup funding.
3. Project Grants: For general proposals for prostate cancer research, including support for innovative clinical trials.
4. Equipment Grants: For significant items of equipment needed to progress ongoing prostate cancer research.
