2008 DEEWR Publications Collection

Researchers and school coordinators are reminded that DEEWR (formerly DEST) publications are due in Research Branch by the end of March. We expect to receive and check over 2500 papers before the June deadline. Many thanks to those coordinators who have begun to submit papers on a progressive basis.

Defence Capability and Technology Demonstrator Program

NSW Department of Commerce - The Co-operative Development Grants Program

Criminology Research Council - 2009 Research Grants

The National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre (NSPAC) - Productive ageing research grants

NSPAC provides funding to a broad range of researchers to undertake consumer oriented research into productive ageing. NSPAC is inviting funding applications for innovative projects that have clear outcomes and benefits for seniors and the general public. Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia Inc - Research Grants 2010

Researchers working in Australia in fields that are relevant to motor neurone disease are invited to apply for funding to support research in the calendar year 2010.

1. Grants-in-Aid for research into motor neurone disease in 2010: Applications for projects in biomedical and health care research are encouraged. A
range of grants, including the named grants below, are offered. In recent years, grants-in-aid have ranged from $15,000 to $35,000 with an average of around $25,000.

2. Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010 - 2012): The Fellowships of the MND Research Institute of Australia aim to encourage young researchers to focus their interest on MND. The Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record in
areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease. Salary will be funded for up to three years at $72,500 per year.

Kidney Health Australia - Medical Research Funding Program

The Kidney Health Australia Medical Research Funding Program provides funding annually to kidney related research projects.

1. Biomedical Research Scholarships: Kidney Health Australia provides scholarships for individuals wishing to study full time for the research degrees of PhD or MD and Masters by research, by undertaking research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidney. The amount of the scholarship stipend will range from $28,000 (Science) to $33,000 (Medical), depending on the qualifications the applicant holds and duration of study, for a period of up to 2 years for a Masters by Research, and up to 3 years for a PhD degree. Applicants should have graduated, or be proposing to graduate in the current academic year. The internal deadline is 21 August 2009.

Arthritis Australia - Grants In Aid and Project Grants 2010

Internal Deadline

Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.

Grants are typically for short-term projects with well defined aims that can be achieved within a 12 month period. The amount allocated is generally in the range of $10,000 - $15,000 per grant for new investigator grants. A maximum of four project grants valued up to $50,000 will be available, including grants focusing on rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Selection is by review process. It is expected that an explicit, justified budget will be provided as part of your application.

J.O & J.R Wicking Trust- General Grants, Support Grants

The goal of the Wicking Trust is to achieve systemic improvements through enduring, positive impact in the areas of care of the aged, problems associated with ageing and Alzheimer's disease. The Trust provides funding to provide benefits for the blind or visually impaired, the aged or for persons suffering from Alzheimer's disease and includes funding research into problems associated with the above. There are 4 categories of Grants.

Leukaemia Foundation National Research Program - Call for applications 2010

Internal Deadlines

In 2010, the Leukaemia Foundation is calling for innovative research applications for Grants-in-Aid, Fellowships and Scholarships. The Foundation is delighted to call for applications for 2010 for innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and related disorders, and the care of patients and families. The following grants are available:

1. Grants-in-aid ($50,000 - $100,000 for one year): The Leukaemia Foundation invites expressions of interest for grants-in-aid for research projects to support basic, applied and translational research in all fields of research which will improve outcomes for people with blood cancers and related disorders.  Applicants are encouraged to develop innovative approaches to haematological problems, especially in the areas of basic or fundamental research. The internal deadline is 24 July 2009.

2. Philip Desbrow Senior Research Fellowship ($200,000/year for 5 years): This new and most prestigious award will provide sustained support for an outstanding young Scientist enabling them to establish a significant research program in an Australian research institute. One award will be made in 2010. This award will provide sustained support for an outstanding young researcher preferably between 3 and 10 years postdoctorate who has established an international reputation for research in the field of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood cancers and disorders. The internal deadline for expression of interest is 24 July 2009.

3. Post Doctoral Fellowship (Up to $100,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates must have been awarded their PhD no more than three years prior to the closing date for applications or else their PhD must be awarded by December of the year of application. The internal deadline is 24 July 2009.

4. PhD Scholarships ($40,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done.  Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD.  Successful applicants who have already commenced their PhD program will only be awarded a Leukaemia Foundation Scholarship for the balance of their study. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.

5. PhD Scholarships (Clinical) ($55,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done.  Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.

Australian Rotary Health Research Fund - Pilot project on young Australians with mental health

Internal Deadline

Applications are sought for one-year research "Pilot" projects investigating the mental health of young Australians. This new offer is the only funding available for mental health research grants in 2010. The total budget for one year of funding must not exceed $35,000. Applications requesting more than $35,000 will not be considered.

Applicants must be an Australian citizen or have Permanent Resident Status and not be under bond to any foreign government. Applicants are to provide, where appropriate, evidence of resident status.

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program (Deadline Extended)

The National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program is designed to foster wide collaboration between groups of investigators and pooling of knowledge, expertise and resources to enable larger scale or accelerated research programs into the prevention, causes, treatment or management of breast cancer.

Funding will now be made available in two stages:
Stage 1: up to $1 million dollars, per annum, for 3 years (Years 1-3).
Stage 2: up to $1 million per annum for an additional two years (Years 4 and 5).  Provision of Stage 2 funding will be dependent on satisfactory completion of Stage 1 research and the availability of funds.

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) - Research Program

The PCFA recognizes that current strategies for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer are inadequate. Progress in the management of prostate cancer requires research as well as measures to make scientifically-rigorous clinical trials accessible to patients with prostate cancer.

PCFA Grant Categories:

1. Young Investigator Grants: To support young scientists beginning a career in prostate cancer research.
2. Concept Grants: For senior scientists not currently working in prostate cancer who have an innovative proposals and are seeking startup funding.
3. Project Grants: For general proposals for prostate cancer research, including support for innovative clinical trials.

The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme

Internal Deadline

The program related primarily to health problems using beer additives which initially arose in Canada and the United States. The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme (AHRGS) aims to provide financial support for independent research in the area of Alcohol and Health.

Value of the fund is up to $35,000. The grants are available to post-graduate researchers on a competitive basis. The key objective of the AHRGS is to help build capacity among young researchers in the early stages of their career.

Heart Foundation - Travel Grants (Round 3)

Travel Grants are an exciting opportunity for the Heart Foundation to support the development of early career cardiovascular researchers. African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) - Victor Rothschild Fellowships

AIMS specially encourage African PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working overseas to apply for Victor Rothschild fellowships to help them establish contacts with African scientists, students and teachers across the continent.

AIMS will cover full travel, accommodation and subsistence costs for the selected Victor Rothschild fellows. A research lab will be available and the fellows will receive a small stipend to cover incidental costs. Fellows will be encouraged to participate in the AIMS teaching program, and to use the AIMS facilities including computer laboratory and library, to conduct scientific research during their stay

Arthritis Australia - Fellowships & Scholarships

Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.

1. Fellowships: The Heald Fellowship is available for research programs both overseas and in Australia. Please note that this is for one year only and there will be no renewals, except in rare circumstances e.g. part-time research.

2. Scholarships: Arthritis Australia offers scholarships for young science and medical graduates to undertake thesis studies into arthritis and related disorders at recognised universities. These scholarships provide research training to doctorate or masters level and are designed to develop the intellectual and technical expertise required for a career involving laboratory and clinical investigation. Scholarships are intended, in general, to support basic and clinical research training within Australian research units and as a precursor to more advanced study in Australia and overseas. Scholarships are for one year and are renewable for three years, depending on progress and funding priorities.

Australian Academy of the Humanities - Travelling Fellowships

Fellowships of up to $4,000 each, they are intended to allow early-career humanities researchers to travel overseas for short periods (not less than two weeks) to access materials in connection with their research. This Programme also incorporates:

1. The Ernst Keller Travelling Fellowships (for travel to European countries to conduct research in European topics or studies – early career researchers and researchers in German studies; however, researchers in other European topics are eligible for the Fellowship and are welcome to apply).

2. The French Embassy in Australia Travelling Fellowships (for travel to France in order to gain access to resources held in French institutions), these are jointly funded by the French Embassy in Australia and the Academy.

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation (HFG) - Research Grants in the Natural and Social Sciences and the Humanities

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation (HFG) welcomes proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence, aggression, and dominance. Particular questions that interest HFG concern violence, aggression, and dominance in relation to social change, the socialization of children, intergroup conflict, interstate warfare, crime, family relationships, and investigations of the control of aggression and violence. Priority will also be given to areas and methodologies not receiving adequate attention and support from other funding sources.

HFG awards research grants to individuals for individual projects and does not award grants to institutions for institutional programs. Awards in the range of US$15,000 to $30,000 a year for periods of one or two years.

The Australian Academy of the Humanities - The Publication Subsidy Scheme

One of the aims of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (AAH) is to advance knowledge of the Humanities by encouraging and supporting scholarship, and the pursuit of excellence, in the broad-ranging fields of the Humanities.

In accordance with this aim, the AAH includes in its activities the Publication Subsidy Scheme to provide modest financial support of up to AU$3,000 for the publication of scholarly works of high quality in the Humanities. The scheme is designed to assist Humanities scholars based in Australia. Both independent scholars and those working within an institution are eligible for the scheme.

Myer Foundation - Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program

Internal Deadline

The current priority areas for the Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program are as follows:

• Communities experiencing social and economic exclusion with particular emphasis on Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers and refugees, and people living in isolated
• rural and remote areas of Australia
• Children and young people from impoverished backgrounds whose opportunities for development and advancement are curtailed
• Small, discreet projects that meet the needs of a community rather than supplementary funding for large projects. A small, discreet project will be considered to have a total budget of up to $50,000.

Grants are capped at $10,000, and are made for a one-year period only. The requested amount may be part of a budget of up to $50,000. Only one application can be considered per applicant. This includes applications submitted to another funding area of The Myer Foundation or the Sidney Myer Fund. Exceptions are made when multiple applications are received from universities and other large organisations where they represent different faculties, departments or schools, and the proposals are unrelated.

Myer Foundation - Small Grants Program

The Myer Foundation's current priority areas are:

The Australian Academy of Science - Award for Conservation of Endangered Australian Veterbrate Species

Internal Deadline

This award offers support for research on endangered Australian vertebrate species (endangered either locally or nationally) with the objective of understanding the causes of their decline and with a view to instituting, or improving, the management of the conditions necessary for the species' recovery.

A total of $20,000 is available for allocation to one or more than one grant. Preference will be given to independent research workers whose research is not funded, or only partially funded, by a university or other institution. Applicants undertaking Masters and particularly PhD studies should ensure that their application identifies clearly the discreet aspect or research component of that larger study for which they are seeking funding support from this award. Successful applicants will be required to give evidence of appropriate Ethics Committee approval.

Sugar Research & Development Corporation (SRDC) - Research Projects

SRDC is calling for researchers to submit research and development proposals for projects commencing from July 2010. SRDC are prepared to invest in bright new ideas and innovative R&D projects from anywhere in the world, which will deliver significant benefits to the Australian community and sugarcane industry.

Research proposals should target one of the following:

1. Mitigating risks of climate change, and facilitating adaptation to climate change and variability.
2. Delivering opportunities for the sugarcane industry in energy, biomass utilisation and product diversification.
3. Reducing production costs and/or improving the utilisation of capital and other resources for cane farming, harvesting and milling.
4. Increasing uptake of improved technologies and improving decision-making by industry enterprises.
5. Developing improved sugarcane varieties

Applications are assessed on a first-come first–serve basis. The Australian Academy of Science receives funding from the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) to deliver the project Australian participation in European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST). The objectives of the ISL program are to:

• Increase the uptake of leading edge science and technology (S&T) through:
• promoting access to and participation by Australian researchers in strategically focussed, leading edge, international scientific research and technology; and
• increased strategic alliances between Australian and overseas researchers.
• Facilitate Australia's access to the global S&T system by supporting bilateral and multilateral relations with other countries.

Funding is available to support up to twelve visits in FY 2009-2010 for Australian researchers to participate in COST Actions. Australian researchers need to be official members of a COST Action to be eligible for funding. This program does not fund students.

Australian researchers travelling to Europe may receive a grant in aid of up to A$5,000 for a STSM, covering a return airfare of up to A$2,500 and daily living allowances. Daily living allowances, covering accommodation and meals are provided at the rate of A$200 per day or a maximum of A$2,500 per month, whichever is the smaller amount.

The Broad Foundation - Medical Research Program (BMRP) for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Research grants are available for innovative proposals that will lead to improvements in the prevention, diagnosis or therapy of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Investigators in nonprofit institutions worldwide are eligible for funding.

Basic and clinical investigators, scientists not currently working in inflammatory bowel disease, and interdisciplinary teams are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to proposals for work conducted with patients and with strong potential of clinical applicability in the foreseeable future. Research using non-human material should lead to translational benefits to patients with IBD.

Funding may be requested for up to two years. Second-year funding will be based on an evaluation of the progress and the perceived value of the findings from the first year of funding. There are no deadlines or specific dates by which to request funding. Proposals are accepted and reviewed year–round, and the BMRP makes every effort to provide rapid response and funding.

Budgets up to USD 90,000 per year for up to 3 years may be requested. The internal closing date is 8 July 2009.

3. Career Development Award: The primary purpose of the Career Development Award is to attract qualified and promising scientists early in their faculty careers and to give them the opportunity to establish themselves in areas that reflect the JDRF research emphasis areas. The Career Development Award is intended for individuals in a relatively early stage of their career. The award is up to USD 150,000 per year, including indirect costs. The internal closing date is 8 July 2009.

4. Innovative Grant: JDRF provides “seed” funding for highly innovative research with potential significant impact on accelerating the mission of JDRF. The innovative research should have the potential for a change in the current paradigm or conventional wisdom or to lead to a seminal discovery or to be groundbreaking. These grants provide one year of support for a maximum of $100,000 in direct costs and indirect costs of 10%, for a total of $110,000. These grants are not renewable. American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) - Research Grants Opportunities

The Wenner - Gren Foundation: International Collaborative Research Grants

The Leakey Foundation - General Research Grants (Pre-Application)

The Leakey Foundation was formed to further research into human origins. SI's Global Drug Policy program aims to broaden, diversify, and consolidate the network of like-minded organizations and individuals that are actively challenging the current state of international drug policy. Stemming from the notion that the "war on drugs" is actually a "war on drug users," the program advocates a more balanced approach in international drug policy with a greater focus on human rights. The program is dedicated to utilizing scientific evidence and input from organizations and individuals engaged in and affected by drug use and drug policy in the development of policy recommendations.

The Australian Academy of Science - Early Career and Career Awards

Each year the Australian Academy of Science rewards scientific excellence. Honorific awards are made to early-career researchers under 40 and to career researchers for life-long achievements:

Nominations are invited for the Paul Bourke Award for Early Career Research (formerly Early Career Award), honouring young Australians who have achieved excellence in scholarship in the social sciences. Nominations (for which there is no formal nomination form) should comprise:
