Consultation Paper on NHMRC’s Research Fellowships Scheme

NHMRC’s Research Fellowship scheme, in place now for decades, has been an outstanding success. Many of Australia’s current and past research stars have been supported through the scheme and NHMRC remains strongly committed to it.

On the 25 May 2009, NHMRC Research Committee launched a consultation process which raises a number of questions and issues for comment and input from the research and wider community in the Consultation Paper on NHMRC’s Research Fellowship Scheme.

Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) - Access to Major Research Facilities Program (AMRFP)

Internal Deadline


The Access to Major Research Facilities Program (AMRFP) supports access by Australian researchers from industry, private and public research organisations and universities to major international research facilities that are not available in Australia or to attend overseas strategic planning meetings to secure access to a major research facility.

This program primarily supports travel where time has been granted on an overseas major facility following peer review. Collaboration visits will not be supported unless time has already been granted at an eligible facility. Two six-month funding rounds are held each year.

NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) - Call for Applications

Internal Deadline


The NHMRC have recently introduced the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) Scheme which replaces the Centres for Clinical Research Excellence Scheme and the Capacity Building Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research.    

The CRE Scheme seeks applications from teams of researchers to pursue innovative, high quality collaborative research activities in the following priority areas:

  • Clinical Research
  • Research into Asbestos Related Diseases
  • Population Health Research
  • Electromagnetic Energy Research
  • Health Services Research 

The CRE will build capacity, support research that will lead to improved community health outcomes, and ensure effective translation of research outcomes primarily into practice. Funding will be awarded for a period of five years and is expected to commence in 2010. Applications open on 10 July 2009.

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) - Young Investigator Award Program

Internal Deadline


The program is intended to facilitate innovative research opportunities and supports basic and/or clinical investigators, however, research must be relevant to our understanding, treatment and prevention of serious psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, or child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. Awards are up to $30,000/year, for one or two years (maximum of $60,000) and this award supports scientists at the advanced post-doctoral or assistant professor (or equivalent) level.

The 2010 Young Investigator Awards application submission has been rescheduled to November.

ANZ Charitable Trusts - Major Grants

Internal Deadline


The Bequest would like to support the development of ideas and catalytic projects that support women and families in the raising of children and that have the potential to enhance the physical and emotional health of women and children and young people within Victoria, including: vulnerable children and young people needing supported education and training pathways; projects focused on indigenous groups and communities; projects located in rural and regional areas; early intervention projects and prevention programs designed to tackle the causes of disadvantage; helping meet the needs of women and children in health care and access to health care. The value of the funding is $10,000 to $80,000 per annum.

The Bequest will favourably consider funding projects that aim to bring about change, particularly beyond the immediate project target group and/or organisation; have made plans for sustainability; have the potential to leverage additional funding from other sources; will build the capacity of the organisation to better respond to need; and are not eligible for, or suitable for, government funding from existing government programs.

Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research - Project Development

ACIAR is part of Australia's international development cooperation program and works toward advancing Australia's national interest by assisting developing countries to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. It does this by encouraging Australian agricultural scientists to use their skills for the benefit of developing countries through international agricultural research and development partnerships.

ACIAR welcomes ideas for new projects at any time. Initial project ideas should be addressed to the appropriate ACIAR Research Program Manager (RPM). ACIAR's principal goals are to reduce food insecurity, improve livelihoods, and care for the natural resource base for agriculture. Small Grants up to $150,000;Medium Grants $150,000 to $400,000; Large Grants $400,000. See Guidelines for definition of these.

Fenner Conference for the Environment & Boden Research Conferences (Biological Sciences)

The Academy supports research through travelling fellowships and conferences that focus on rapidly developing fields of research. Expressions of Interest for these awards are now sought for 2010/11.

Fenner Conference: Funding of up to $8000 (GST exempt) is provided. The supplementation of this sum is encouraged. One conference is funded annually.

Boden Conferences: One conference per annum will be funded. A sum of up to $10,000 (GST exempt) is offered.

Societies and organisers are invited to submit a one page expression of intent to hold a conference setting out the aims, objectives and timeliness of the program; evidence of support from the relevant scientific society should also be provided. Successful proposers will be invited to provide a detailed proposal for further assessment.

The National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre (NSPAC) - Productive ageing research grants

NSPAC provides funding to a broad range of researchers to undertake consumer oriented research into productive ageing. NSPAC is inviting funding applications for innovative projects that have clear outcomes and benefits for seniors and the general public. This year three priority areas for the grants have been identified:

Association for Research between Italy and Australasia (ARIA) - Australian Travel Award for L’Aquila researchers

External Deadline


Do you have colleagues in L’Aquila, Italy who want to study at the University of Adelaide?

A Travel award is administrated by ARIA-Canberra (Association for Research between Italy and Australasia, Canberra) to provide support for the scholars affected by the L’Aquila earthquake by offering a possibility to continue their research in an Australian Institution. Each of the 10 Awards will provide AU$5,000 towards the visit of a researcher from L’Aquila to an Australian institution. At least eight of the ten Travel Awards will be granted for visits to the Group of 8 Universities

The sponsored research visits will have to be carried out by 31 December 2010 and should have a minimum duration of 8 weeks. Applications close on 30 September 2009. Notification to the successful applicants by early November 2009.

Acton Institute - Calihan Travel Grants

The Calihan Travel Grants provide financial assistance to students who have been selected to present, at an academic conference, research relevant to themes promoted by the Acton Institute. Such themes include the integration of theological ideas with principles of limited government, rule of law, religious freedom, and economic liberty. Grants are also open to students who need to travel to, and perform research at, archives or libraries or to attend educational conferences that involve the above themes. Travel grants do not exceed $3,000.

US Department of Defense Multiple Sclerosis Research Program Funding Opportunities (Pre-Application)

The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriations Act provides $5 million to the Department of Defense Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP) to
promote innovative research focused on multiple sclerosis (MS). The MSRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative and integrated research that will enhance knowledge relevant to understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of, and to quantifying and treating, MS.

US Department of Defense Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) Pre-Applications

Internal Deadlines


The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriation Act provides for $16 million (M) to the Department of Defense (DOD) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) to research cancers not addressed in the breast, prostate, and ovarian cancer research programs. The funds provided are directed to be used to conduct research in the following areas:

1. Mentor-Predoctoral Fellow Research Award in non-invasive cancer ablation treatment research. Internal deadline is 29 July 2009.
2. Concept Award in non-invasive cancer ablation treatment research, and Genetic cancer research and its relation to exposure to the various environments that are unique to a military lifestyle. Internal deadline is 8 July 2009.
3. Idea Award in genetic cancer research and its relation to exposure to the various environments that are unique to a military lifestyle. Internal deadline is 29 July 2009.
4. New Investigator Award in genetic cancer research and its relation to exposure to the various environments that are unique to a military lifestyle. Internal deadline is 29 July 2009.
5. Synergistic Idea Award in pediatric brain tumors within the field of childhood cancer research. Internal deadline is 29 July 2009.
6. Collaborative Translational Science Award in melanoma and other skin cancers as related to deployments of service members to areas of high exposure. Internal deadline is 29 July 2009.

The Barth Syndrome Foundation, Inc. (BSF) - Science & Medicine Research Grant Process (Request for Research Proposals)

Internal Deadline


The Barth Syndrome Foundation (BSF) provides funding for research on the natural history, biochemical basis, gene product function and treatment of Barth syndrome. Value of the fund is up to $40,000 for two years.

BSF is most interested in providing “seed money” to be used by experienced investigators for the testing of initial hypotheses and collection of preliminary data leading to successful long-term funding by NIH and other major granting institutions. In addition, we are especially interested in attracting new investigators to the very interesting field of Barth syndrome research.

DFAT Australia Malaysia Institute - Collaborative Research Grants

Internal Deadline


The Australia-Malaysia Institute (AMI) provides financial support to selected projects which aim to promote and enhance bilateral links between Australia and Malaysia. Funding is awarded through a competitive selection process. Applications are now being invited for funding in the 2009-10 financial year, for projects commencing between September 2009 and 30 June 2010.

Most grants awarded are in the range of AUD $3,000 - $10,000. Larger grants will only be provided for particularly worthwhile projects. Funding priority will be given to projects which have an identified Malaysian partner and seek to strengthen Australia’s bilateral relationship with Malaysia in the following areas: Public Policy; Education and Science: Health: Media: Sport.

Menzies Centre for Australian Studies - Rydon Fellowship in Australian Politics & Political History

This fellowship is tenable at the Menzies Centre for one term and preference is given to:

1. scholars who have recently completed a doctorate and have a contract to convert their thesis into a book; and
2. scholars who are engaged in collaborative research with Menzies Centre staff.

Remuneration is £5,000. Fellows will normally be based in London during the term of their tenure, which will occur at some time between October 2009 and May 2010.

European Commission - Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowships (IIF)

This opportunity aims at encouraging top class researchers from 'third' countries to work on research projects in Europe, with a view to developing mutually beneficial research co-operations between Europe and third countries. Proposals from all areas of scientific and technological research of interest to the European Union are welcome. Funding includes a salary for the researcher and a contribution towards research-related costs.

The Matsumae International Foundation - Fellowship

The Matsumae International Foundation is offering another round of fellowships. The Foundation hopes to accept researchers from as many nations as possible, but first priority will be given to the fields of natural science, engineering and medicine. Fellowships are available between October 2009 - March 2010. Available for the fellowship is 240,000 yen monthly and 100,00 yen on arrival, plus airfare and insurance.

US Department of Defense Bone Marrow Failure Research Program (BMFRP) - Pre-Applications

The fiscal year 2009 Department of Defense, Bone Marrow Failure Research Program, $5 million appropriation, is offering the first of three funding mechanisms, the Bone Marrow Failure (BMFRP) Hypothesis Development Awards.  

The Bone Marrow Failure Hypothesis Development Awards will support the initial exploration of innovative, untested, novel, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in bone marrow failure research. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rational upon which a new hypothesis can be based, or it should provide initial principles of an innovative hypothesis. Funding is available for a maximum period of performance is 18 months. Maximum allowable funding for the entire period of performance is $100,000. Arthritis Australia - Grants In Aid and Project Grants 2010

Internal Deadline


Arthritis Australia 2010 research grant applications are now open to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals and recognised research institutes.

Grants are typically for short-term projects with well defined aims that can be achieved within a 12 month period. The amount allocated is generally in the range of $10,000 - $15,000 per grant for new investigator grants. A maximum of four project grants valued up to $50,000 will be available, including grants focusing on rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Selection is by review process. It is expected that an explicit, justified budget will be provided as part of your application.

Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) - Research Program

The PCFA recognizes that current strategies for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer are inadequate. Progress in the management of prostate cancer requires research as well as measures to make scientifically-rigorous clinical trials accessible to patients with prostate cancer.

PCFA Grant Categories:

1. Young Investigator Grants: To support young scientists beginning a career in prostate cancer research.
2. Concept Grants: For senior scientists not currently working in prostate cancer who have an innovative proposals and are seeking startup funding.
3. Project Grants: For general proposals for prostate cancer research, including support for innovative clinical trials.
