FEAST News - Get ready for upcoming calls for 2010 (2010 Work Programmes for FP7)

Calls for the 2010 Work Programmes for FP7 are expected to open within the coming weeks. All researchers interested in engaging with FP7 to contact their European colleagues now, rather than wait for the calls to open. Similarly, all European researchers are reminded that they should consider including Australian partners in your proposal - Yes! Australians can be involved, and Yes! Australians may be eligible for EC funding.

Consultation Paper on NHMRC’s Research Fellowships Scheme

NHMRC’s Research Fellowship scheme, in place now for decades, has been an outstanding success. Many of Australia’s current and past research stars have been supported through the scheme and NHMRC remains strongly committed to it.

On the 25 May 2009, NHMRC Research Committee launched a consultation process which raises a number of questions and issues for comment and input from the research and wider community in the Consultation Paper on NHMRC’s Research Fellowship Scheme.

Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) - Access to Major Research Facilities Program (AMRFP)

Internal Deadline


The Access to Major Research Facilities Program (AMRFP) supports access by Australian researchers from industry, private and public research organisations and universities to major international research facilities that are not available in Australia or to attend overseas strategic planning meetings to secure access to a major research facility.

This program primarily supports travel where time has been granted on an overseas major facility following peer review. Collaboration visits will not be supported unless time has already been granted at an eligible facility. Two six-month funding rounds are held each year.

NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) - Call for Applications

Internal Deadline


The NHMRC have recently introduced the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) Scheme which replaces the Centres for Clinical Research Excellence Scheme and the Capacity Building Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research.    

The CRE Scheme seeks applications from teams of researchers to pursue innovative, high quality collaborative research activities in the following priority areas:

  • Clinical Research
  • Research into Asbestos Related Diseases
  • Population Health Research
  • Electromagnetic Energy Research
  • Health Services Research 

The CRE will build capacity, support research that will lead to improved community health outcomes, and ensure effective translation of research outcomes primarily into practice. Funding will be awarded for a period of five years and is expected to commence in 2010. Applications open on 10 July 2009.

The Australian Academy of Science - Award for Conservation of Endangered Australian Veterbrate Species

Internal Deadline


This award offers support for research on endangered Australian vertebrate species (endangered either locally or nationally) with the objective of understanding the causes of their decline and with a view to instituting, or improving, the management of the conditions necessary for the species' recovery.

A total of $20,000 is available for allocation to one or more than one grant. Preference will be given to independent research workers whose research is not funded, or only partially funded, by a university or other institution. Applicants undertaking Masters and particularly PhD studies should ensure that their application identifies clearly the discreet aspect or research component of that larger study for which they are seeking funding support from this award. Successful applicants will be required to give evidence of appropriate Ethics Committee approval.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Australia - Travel Awards

The Macquarie Group Foundation Diabetes Research Innovation Partnership aims to advance the level and impact of type 1 diabetes research in Australia.

Young Scientist: JDRF invites applications from young researchers for grants of up to $2,500 to allow travel to research institutions or scientific meetings, for the purpose of furthering the researcher’s expertise in the study of type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents residing in
Australia.

Allied Health and Nursing: The Allied Health and Nursing Travel Grants are funded by the Macquarie Group Foundation as part of this partnership. JDRF invites applications from young allied health professionals for grants of up to $2,000 to allow travel for the purpose of presenting their research relevant to type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents residing in Australia.

Australian Research Council Nanotechnolgy Network (ARCNN) - Travel Grants

ARCNN supports the nanotechnology community by making funding support available to postgraduate students and early career researchers (within 5 years of award of PhD degree) for travel and accommodation expenses associated with visits within Australia.

Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF) - The Shaffer Fund for Innovative Glaucoma Research

The Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF) supports new, novel and high impact clinical, epidemiological and laboratory research. Successful projects target one or more of GRF’s Strategic Research Goals, with an emphasis on collaborative pilot projects across disciplines.

Investigators must possess a graduate or post-doctoral degree to apply for support. We encourage interdisciplinary teams and collaborations that may lead to new glaucoma treatments. Shaffer Grants are typically awarded in the range of US$15,000 to $40,000 and are awarded for one year.

American Academy of Implant Dentistry: Research Foundation - Research Grants

Internal Deadline


The American Academy of Implant Dentistry Research Foundation (AAIDRF) Small Grants Program is intended to provide limited support for meritorious dental implant research projects which include, but are not limited to, the following purposes:

1. To conduct research which determines the feasibility of a larger research project. This may be described as the conduct of pilot studies of venture research.
2. To develop and test new techniques and procedures.
3. To carry out a small clinical or animal research project.
4. To analyse existing data.

Investigators from any scientific discipline and at any stage of their career may apply for a Small Grant. Applicants may request up to US$10,000 (total costs)
for the entire budget to fund the project for up to a two-year grant period.

NIH /US Department of Health and Human Services: Highly Innovative Tactics to Interrupt Transmission of HIV (HIT-IT) (R01) - Letter of Intent

The purpose of this initiative entitled “Highly Innovative Tactics to Interrupt Transmission of HIV (HIT-IT)” is to foster exceptionally innovative, high risk, original and/or unique and unconventional research that, if successful, will have an unusually high impact on HIV/AIDS prevention. Applicants to this FOA must articulate how their proposed new idea, approach and rationale: (1) offer a potential solution to interrupt HIV transmission and prevent acquisition, (2) could be unequivocally tested and potentially implemented, (3) differ from current or previous failed approaches, and (4) will contribute, inform, or provide incremental knowledge to the field regardless of the outcome of the proposed work.

US Department of Defense Multiple Sclerosis Research Program Funding Opportunities (Pre-Application)

US Department of Defense Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) Pre-Applications

Internal Deadlines


The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriation Act provides for $16 million (M) to the Department of Defense (DOD) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) to research cancers not addressed in the breast, prostate, and ovarian cancer research programs. The funds provided are directed to be used to conduct research in the following areas:

1. Mentor-Predoctoral Fellow Research Award in non-invasive cancer ablation treatment research. Internal deadline is 29 July 2009.
2. Concept Award in non-invasive cancer ablation treatment research, and Genetic cancer research and its relation to exposure to the various environments that are unique to a military lifestyle. Internal deadline is 8 July 2009.
3. Idea Award in genetic cancer research and its relation to exposure to the various environments that are unique to a military lifestyle. Internal deadline is 29 July 2009.
4. New Investigator Award in genetic cancer research and its relation to exposure to the various environments that are unique to a military lifestyle. Internal deadline is 29 July 2009.
5. Synergistic Idea Award in pediatric brain tumors within the field of childhood cancer research. Internal deadline is 29 July 2009.

DFAT Australia Malaysia Institute - Collaborative Research Grants

Internal Deadline


The Australia-Malaysia Institute (AMI) provides financial support to selected projects which aim to promote and enhance bilateral links between Australia and Malaysia. Funding is awarded through a competitive selection process. Applications are now being invited for funding in the 2009-10 financial year, for projects commencing between September 2009 and 30 June 2010.

Most grants awarded are in the range of AUD $3,000 - $10,000. Larger grants will only be provided for particularly worthwhile projects. Funding priority will be given to projects which have an identified Malaysian partner and seek to strengthen Australia’s bilateral relationship with Malaysia in the following areas: Public Policy; Education and Science: Health: Media: Sport.

Dr. R.Marika Conference Support Scholarship

The scholarship was created jointly by the Australia Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and Reconciliation Australia. Offered each year, the scholarship will support an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander researcher to attend a major international conference held outside Australia. The scholarship will provide funding of up to $3000 and will be awarded on merit.

Support is restricted to an individual. Applications for the Dr R. Marika Conference Support Scholarship are not part of the AIATSIS research grant application process and will be considered separately by AIATSIS and Reconciliation Australia.

The Garnett Passe & Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation - Research Training Fellowships

Applications are invited for Research Training Fellowships in Otorhinolaryngology or the related fields of biomedical science to commence in 2010. In the NHMRC Training Support Package Level 1 range, clinically loaded if appropriate, with a maintenance allowance of $7,500 pa.

The Sector for Social and Human Sciences calls for nominations for the Avicenna Prize 2009. The prize (US$10,000) includes a gold medal of Avicenna along with a certificate and a week-long scientific visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran, seeks to promote ethical reflection on issues raised by the rapid advancements in science and technology.

National Breast Cancer Foundation - Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program (Deadline Extended)

The National Collaborative Breast Cancer Research Grant Program is designed to foster wide collaboration between groups of investigators and pooling of knowledge, expertise and resources to enable larger scale or accelerated research programs into the prevention, causes, treatment or management of breast cancer.

Funding will now be made available in two stages:
Stage 1: up to $1 million dollars, per annum, for 3 years (Years 1-3).
Stage 2: up to $1 million per annum for an additional two years (Years 4 and 5).  Provision of Stage 2 funding will be dependent on satisfactory completion of Stage 1 research and the availability of funds.
