The Access to Major Research Facilities Program (AMRFP) supports access by Australian researchers from industry, private and public research organisations and universities to major international research facilities that are not available in Australia or to attend overseas strategic planning meetings to secure access to a major research facility.
This program primarily supports travel where time has been granted on an overseas major facility following peer review. Collaboration visits will not be supported unless time has already been granted at an eligible facility. Two six-month funding rounds are held each year.

NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) - Call for Applications |

The NHMRC have recently introduced the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) Scheme which replaces the Centres for Clinical Research Excellence Scheme and the Capacity Building Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research.
The CRE Scheme seeks applications from teams of researchers to pursue innovative, high quality collaborative research activities in the following priority areas:
- Clinical Research
- Research into Asbestos Related Diseases
- Population Health Research
- Electromagnetic Energy Research
- Health Services Research
The CRE will build capacity, support research that will lead to improved community health outcomes, and ensure effective translation of research outcomes primarily into practice. Funding will be awarded for a period of five years and is expected to commence in 2010. Applications opened on 10 July 2009. Applicants should note that NHMRC’s new on-line system will be used.

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) - Young Investigator Award Program |

The program is intended to facilitate innovative research opportunities and supports basic and/or clinical investigators, however, research must be relevant to our understanding, treatment and prevention of serious psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, or child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. Researchers working in Australia in fields that are relevant to motor neurone disease are invited to apply for
funding to support research in the calendar year 2010.
1. Grants-in-Aid for research into motor neurone disease in 2010: Applications for projects in biomedical and health care research are encouraged. A
range of grants, including the named grants below, are offered. In recent years, grants-in-aid have ranged
from $15,000 to $35,000 with an average of around $25,000.
2. Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010 - 2012): The Fellowships of the MND Research Institute of Australia aim to encourage young researchers to focus

1. Biomedical Research Scholarships: Kidney Health Australia provides scholarships for individuals wishing to study full time for the research degrees of PhD or MD and Masters by research, by undertaking research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidney. Leukaemia Foundation National Research Program - Call for applications 2010 |

In 2010, the Leukaemia Foundation is calling for innovative research applications for Grants-in-Aid, Fellowships and Scholarships. The Foundation is delighted to call for applications for 2010 for innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and related disorders, and the care of patients and families. The following grants are available:
1. Grants-in-aid ($50,000 - $100,000 for one year): The Leukaemia Foundation invites expressions of interest for grants-in-aid for research projects to support basic, applied and translational research in all fields of research which will improve outcomes for people with blood cancers and related disorders. Applicants are encouraged to develop innovative approaches to haematological problems, especially in the areas of basic or fundamental research. The internal deadline is 24 July 2009.
2. Philip Desbrow Senior Research Fellowship ($200,000/year for 5 years): This new and most prestigious award will provide sustained support for an outstanding young Scientist enabling them to establish a significant research program in an Australian research institute. One award will be made in 2010. This award will provide sustained support for an outstanding young researcher preferably between 3 and 10 years postdoctorate who has established an international reputation for research in the field of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood cancers and disorders. The internal deadline for expression of interest is 24 July 2009.
3. Post Doctoral Fellowship (Up to $100,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates must have been awarded their PhD no more than three years prior to the closing date for applications or else their PhD must be awarded by December of the year of application. The internal deadline is 24 July 2009.
4. PhD Scholarships ($40,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done. Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD. Successful applicants who have already commenced their PhD program will only be awarded a Leukaemia Foundation Scholarship for the balance of their study. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.
5. PhD Scholarships (Clinical) ($55,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done. Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.

Australian Rotary Health Research Fund - Pilot project on young Australians with mental health |

Applications are sought for one-year research "Pilot" projects investigating the mental health of young Australians. This new offer is the only funding available for mental health research grants in 2010. The total budget for one year of funding must not exceed $35,000. The CASS Foundation Travel Grants are offered to further the career opportunities of early career Australian post-doctoral researchers by enabling them to make presentations of their research findings at international conferences/meetings/related activities ("conferences") where they may meet colleagues and establish the foundations for on going research collaborations. The CASS Travel Grants program was developed to assist early career researchers (ECR). In most cases, CASS will consider an ECR to be a researcher who is within seven or eight years of the start of their research career.
Note: Applications open 3 August 2009. Opening date of Conference/Meeting/Activity must fall between 1 November 2009 and 31 May 2010.
The maximum amount of a CASS Travel Grant that may be awarded is the lesser of A$6,000.00 or eighty percent (80%) of the “Total Cost” as disclosed on the Application Form.

Research grants are available for innovative proposals that will lead to improvements in the prevention, diagnosis or therapy of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Investigators in nonprofit institutions worldwide are eligible for funding.
Basic and clinical investigators, scientists not currently working in inflammatory bowel disease, and interdisciplinary teams are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to proposals for work conducted with patients and with strong potential of clinical applicability in the foreseeable future. American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) - Research Grants Opportunities |

AFSP offers six types of research grants:
1. Linked Standard Research Grants: for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.
2. Young Investigator Grants: for up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator’s research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.
3. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.
4. Standard Research Grants: for up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.
5. Distinguished Investigator Grants: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.
6. Pilot Grants: of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

The Wenner - Gren Foundation: International Collaborative Research Grants |

The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills to the project.
Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication. By encouraging international collaborations, the grant contributes to the development of an international anthropology that values and incorporates different national perspectives and resources. By providing training funds, the grant helps to build capacity in countries were anthropology may be under-resourced. Each researcher must hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification in anthropology or a related discipline.
The grants are for a maximum of US$30,000 for the research project.
