2009 DEEWR Publications Collection


Researchers and school coordinators are reminded that DEEWR (formerly DEST) HERDC publications are due in Research Branch by the end of March. Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) - Access to Major Research Facilities Program (AMRFP)

Internal Deadline


The Access to Major Research Facilities Program (AMRFP) supports access by Australian researchers from industry, private and public research organisations and universities to major international research facilities that are not available in Australia or to attend overseas strategic planning meetings to secure access to a major research facility.

This program primarily supports travel where time has been granted on an overseas major facility following peer review. Collaboration visits will not be supported unless time has already been granted at an eligible facility. Two six-month funding rounds are held each year.

NSW Department of Commerce - The Co-operative Development Grants Program

Australian Rotary Health/Bipolar Expedition - Bi-Polar Disorder in Australia (One Year Research Project)

The Bipolar Expedition is an initiative developed within the Australian branch of the successful Brightest Young Minds Foundation, an organisation which provides a platform for Australian adults to launch ventures to address pressing social issues. In November 2009 an expedition will embark on a three-week trek to the South Pole and in April 2010 a similar trek to the North Pole. This initiative began to discover better ways to manage and diagnose Bipolar Disorder. Australian Rotary Health is partnering The Bipolar Expedition to advertise, assess and distribute funds raised. Researchers Australia-Wide are encouraged to apply.

The Australian Rotary Health/Bipolar Expedition Research Project is valued at $55,000.00 + GST for 1 year.

The Australian Society for Medical Research - Research Awards

Internal Deadline


ASMR offers two Research Awards annually. These awards support a postgraduate student member of the ASMR nearing completion of their studies or a recently graduated ( 2 years maximum) postdoctoral member to undertake a short period of research in a laboratory outside of Australia ($5,000) or in a distal laboratory ($2,000) within Australia. The award specifically excludes support for conference attendance and travel for an extended period of postdoctoral studies. Applicants for these awards must have been members of the ASMR for at least 12 months immediately preceding the year in which the Award application is to be considered.

NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) - Call for Applications

Internal Deadline


The NHMRC have recently introduced the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) Scheme which replaces the Centres for Clinical Research Excellence Scheme and the Capacity Building Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research.    

The CRE Scheme seeks applications from teams of researchers to pursue innovative, high quality collaborative research activities in the following priority areas:

  • Clinical Research
  • Research into Asbestos Related Diseases
  • Population Health Research
  • Electromagnetic Energy Research
  • Health Services Research 

The CRE will build capacity, support research that will lead to improved community health outcomes, and ensure effective translation of research outcomes primarily into practice. Funding will be awarded for a period of five years and is expected to commence in 2010. Applications opened on 10 July 2009. Applicants should note that NHMRC’s new on-line system will be used.

Once potential applicants receive their ‘login’ they can proceed with filling out their Profile and CV. Australian Podiatry Education and Research Foundation - Research Grants

Internal Deadline


The mission of the Australian Podiatry Education and Research Foundation (APERF) is to support and facilitate research into foot and related problems. As such, the Foundation offers financial support for projects that are focussed on the causes, assessment, diagnosis, management and outcomes of foot and related problems. Further to this, the Foundation supports research into professional issues associated with podiatry and the provision of quality podiatric care.

The APERF Grant is open to all people involved in foot and related research. However, weighting will be given to applications whose team includes podiatric representation, particularly as the primary applicant.

Grants between $2,000 and $4,000 for novice researchers and $2,000 and $8,000 for experienced researchers will be available for projects.

Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia Inc - Research Grants 2010

Researchers working in Australia in fields that are relevant to motor neurone disease are invited to apply for funding to support research in the calendar year 2010.

1. Grants-in-Aid for research into motor neurone disease in 2010: Applications for projects in biomedical and health care research are encouraged. A
range of grants, including the named grants below, are offered. In recent years, grants-in-aid have ranged from $15,000 to $35,000 with an average of around $25,000.

2. Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010 - 2012)
: The Fellowships of the MND Research Institute of Australia aim to encourage young researchers to focus their interest on MND. The Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record in
areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease. Salary will be funded for up to three years at $72,500 per year.

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) - Young Investigator Award Program

The program is intended to facilitate innovative research opportunities and supports basic and/or clinical investigators, however, research must be relevant to our understanding, treatment and prevention of serious psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, or child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. Awards are up to $30,000/year, for one or two years (maximum of $60,000) and this award supports scientists at the advanced post-doctoral or assistant professor (or equivalent) level.

The 2010 Young Investigator Awards application submission has been rescheduled to November.

ANZ Charitable Trusts - Major Grants

The Bequest would like to support the development of ideas and catalytic projects that support women and families in the raising of children and that have the potential to enhance the physical and emotional health of women and children and young people within Victoria, including: vulnerable children and young people needing supported education and training pathways; projects focused on indigenous groups and communities; projects located in rural and regional areas; early intervention projects and prevention programs designed to tackle the causes of disadvantage; helping meet the needs of women and children in health care and access to health care. The value of the funding is $10,000 to $80,000 per annum.

Kidney Health Australia - Medical Research Funding Program

The Kidney Health Australia Medical Research Funding Program provides funding annually to kidney related research projects.

1. Biomedical Research Scholarships: Kidney Health Australia provides scholarships for individuals wishing to study full time for the research degrees of PhD or MD and Masters by research, by undertaking research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disorders of the kidney. The amount of the scholarship stipend will range from $28,000 (Science) to $33,000 (Medical), depending on the qualifications the applicant holds and duration of study, for a period of up to 2 years for a Masters by Research, and up to 3 years for a PhD degree. Applicants should have graduated, or be proposing to graduate in the current academic year. The internal deadline is 21 August 2009.

Leukaemia Foundation National Research Program - Call for applications 2010

Internal Deadlines


In 2010, the Leukaemia Foundation is calling for innovative research applications for Grants-in-Aid, Fellowships and Scholarships. The Foundation is delighted to call for applications for 2010 for innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and related disorders, and the care of patients and families. The following grants are available:

1. PhD Scholarships ($40,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done.  Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD.  Successful applicants who have already commenced their PhD program will only be awarded a Leukaemia Foundation Scholarship for the balance of their study. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.

2. PhD Scholarships (Clinical) ($55,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done.  Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD. The internal deadline is 18 September 2009.

The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme

The program related primarily to health problems using beer additives which initially arose in Canada and the United States. The Alcohol and Health Research Grants Scheme (AHRGS) aims to provide financial support for independent research in the area of Alcohol and Health.

Value of the fund is up to $35,000. The grants are available to post-graduate researchers on a competitive basis. The key objective of the AHRGS is to help build capacity among young researchers in the early stages of their career.

CASS Foundation Ltd - Travel Grants (Round 2)

The CASS Foundation Travel Grants are offered to further the career opportunities of early career Australian post-doctoral researchers by enabling them to make presentations of their research findings at international conferences/meetings/related activities ("conferences") where they may meet colleagues and establish the foundations for on going research collaborations. The CASS Travel Grants program was developed to assist early career researchers (ECR). In most cases, CASS will consider an ECR to be a researcher who is within seven or eight years of the start of their research career.

Note: Applications open 3 August 2009. Opening date of Conference/Meeting/Activity must fall between 1 November 2009 and 31 May 2010.

African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) - Victor Rothschild Fellowships

AIMS specially encourage African PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working overseas to apply for Victor Rothschild fellowships to help them establish contacts with African scientists, students and teachers across the continent.

AIMS will cover full travel, accommodation and subsistence costs for the selected Victor Rothschild fellows. US Department of Defense - Lung Cancer Research Funding Opportunity Concept Awards (Pre Applications)

US Department of Defense: 2009 Spinal Cord Injury Research Program Funding Opportunity - Pre Applications

The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriations Act provides $35 million to the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP). This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). A summary of SCIRP funding opportunities is provided below:

1.Clinical Trial Award- Rehabilitation: The Clinical Trial Award – Rehabilitation (CTA-R) supports rapid implementation of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the understanding of SCI and amelioration of its consequences. All studies must be focused on rehabilitative aspects of SCI. Internal deadline is 20 August 2009.

2. Translational Research Partnership Award: The intent of the SCIRP Translational Research Partnership Award is to encourage multi-institutional, multidisciplinary partnerships among clinicians and laboratory scientists that accelerate the movement of promising ideas in SCI research into clinical applications. Proposals that focus on research outcome measures are encouraged. This award is intended to support both new and established scientists across a broad spectrum of disciplines in research projects that are likely to make a major impact on SCI research. 3. Investigator-Initiated Research Award:
The Investigator-Initiated Research Award (IIRA) is intended to support studies that make an important contribution to SCI research and/or patient care. Projects should address an Area of Encouragement and be applicable to the health care needs of the military service members, their family members, and/or the U.S. veteran population. All applications must specifically and clearly address the military relevance of the proposed research. Collaboration with military researchers and clinicians is encouraged. 4. Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award:
The SCIRP Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award (EHDA) supports the initial exploration of innovative, untested, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the SCI research field. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rationale upon which a new hypothesis can be based, or they should provide initial principles of an innovative hypothesis. This award is designed to provide investigators with the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations. Some gaps in supporting rationale may exist due to a lack of available information. 5. Advanced Technology/Therapeutic Development Award:
The Advanced Technology/Therapeutic Development Award (AT/TDA) is intended to support demonstration studies of pharmaceuticals (drugs, biologics, and vaccines) and medical devices in preclinical systems and/or the testing of therapeutics and devices in clinical studies. The intent of the Advanced Technology/Therapeutic Development Award is to assess therapeutics and devices for the treatment, prevention, detection, and diagnosis of SCI. PRORP Program Announcements have been released in five funding mechanisms by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs. The Program Announcements are open and accepting submissions. Independent investigators, scientists and clinicians (at all academic levels) in the fields of: Trauma, Emergency Medicine, Orthopaedic Specialists, Orthopedic Surgery, Rehabilitation, Orthopaedic Materials Science and Engineering, Sports Medicine, and Physical Therapy are eligible to apply. The five funding mechanisms are:

1. The Broad Foundation - Medical Research Program (BMRP) for Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Research grants are available for innovative proposals that will lead to improvements in the prevention, diagnosis or therapy of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Investigators in nonprofit institutions worldwide are eligible for funding.

Basic and clinical investigators, scientists not currently working in inflammatory bowel disease, and interdisciplinary teams are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to proposals for work conducted with patients and with strong potential of clinical applicability in the foreseeable future. Research using non-human material should lead to translational benefits to patients with IBD.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) - Research Grants Opportunities

AFSP offers six types of research grants:

1. Linked Standard Research Grants: for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.

2. Young Investigator Grants: for up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator’s research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.

3. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.

4. Standard Research Grants: for up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.

5. Distinguished Investigator Grants: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.

6. Pilot Grants: of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

The A-T Children's Project - Research Grant Program

The A-T Children's Project strives to assist respected scientists in developing a clearer understanding of ataxia-telangiectasia. The Project provides competitive grant awards for basic and translational research grants related to A-T. The Wenner - Gren Foundation: International Collaborative Research Grants

Internal Deadline


The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills to the project.

Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication. By encouraging international collaborations, the grant contributes to the development of an international anthropology that values and incorporates different national perspectives and resources. By providing training funds, the grant helps to build capacity in countries were anthropology may be under-resourced. Each researcher must hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification in anthropology or a related discipline.

The grants are for a maximum of US$30,000 for the research project.

Internal deadline for Round 2 is 24 November 2009 for projects starting in July through December of the following year.

The Barth Syndrome Foundation, Inc. (BSF) - Science & Medicine Research Grant Process (Request for Research Proposals)

The Barth Syndrome Foundation (BSF) provides funding for research on the natural history, biochemical basis, gene product function and treatment of Barth syndrome. Value of the fund is up to $40,000 for two years.

BSF is most interested in providing “seed money” to be used by experienced investigators for the testing of initial hypotheses and collection of preliminary data leading to successful long-term funding by NIH and other major granting institutions. In addition, we are especially interested in attracting new investigators to the very interesting field of Barth syndrome research.

National Geographic Society - Waitt Grants Program

The National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program, an initiative of the National Geographic Society and the Waitt Institute for Discovery, helps qualified and experienced individuals launch the most difficult stage of a project for which to secure funding—the search. Grants are made for exploratory fieldwork that holds promise for new breakthroughs in the natural and social sciences. NGS/Waitt Grants applications are processed throughout the year and grants are awarded expeditiously to help researchers take advantage of immediate opportunities.

Funded through a five-year grant from the Waitt Family Foundation, the NGS/Waitt Grants Program is administered by National Geographic Mission Programs and makes approximately one hundred grants annually of $5,000 to $15,000. Hereditary Disease Foundation - Research Grants

The focus of the Hereditary Disease Foundation is on Huntington's disease. Support will be for research projects that will contribute to identifying and understanding the basic defect in Huntington's disease. The Thrasher Research Fund - Early Career Award (Paediatrics)

The Thrasher Research Fund is pleased to announce the fourth year of its Early Career Award Program in for 2009. The Fund will continue to make 30 awards in 2009,expanded from 21 awards in 2006-2007. The Fund is open to a variety of research topics important to children’s health. The Fund’s current focus is on clinical/translational pediatric research. Alexander von Humboldt - Research Fellowships

Australian Academy of Science - The Rudi Lemberg Travelling Fellowship

The purpose of the Fellowship is to enable either Australian or overseas scientists of standing to visit Australian scientific centres and to deliver lectures.
