The Federal Government’s budget announced that up to 50 ARC Super Science 2010 Fellowships are intended to be offered in three areas:
1. Space science and astronomy;
2. Marine and climate science; and
3. Future industries research – biotechnology and nanotechnology.
Whilst there are no firm dates available at present, interested applicants are requested to complete and return a Notification of Intent to Research Branch at arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au by 4 September 2009.

SA Premier’s Science & Research Fund (PSRF) – Round 7 Advance Notice |

The SA Stage Government has given advance notice that Round 7 of the SA Premier’s Science & Research Fund (PSRF) will run this year. The PSRF was established to facilitate investment in key science and research initiatives that have a demonstrable potential to generate significant strategic and sustainable economic, social and/or environmental benefits for the State.
In Round 7, applications addressing SA strategic research areas (refer SASP, STI10, Constellation SA), with a focus on Adaptation to Climate Change will be particularly welcomed. As in previous years, the PSRF will also consider requests for support for ARC Laureate Fellowship applications.
The PSRF application process involves two stages.
• Stage 1: comprises a 3-page 'Expression of Interest' and these are due by Monday 31st August 2008 in Research Branch, together with a fully signed internal contribution certification page
• Stage 2: successful Stage 1 applicants will be invited to submit a more detailed Stage 2 application and project case by Friday 3 October 2008.

CSIRO Flagship Clusters - CSIRO Flagship Collaboration Fund |

The fifth round of Flagship Clusters offers collaboration opportunities in the following six key research areas of national interest. Specifications are available at:
The Flagship clusters fund a large scale of activity with an emphasis on people and partnerships working on a collection of projects relevant to a Flagship's goals. The Flagship clusters foster collaboration between CSIRO, universities and other publicly-funded research agencies.
Flagship clusters will be funded for about three years at approximately A$1million per annum from the Flagship Collaboration Fund. Co-investment from partner organisations is expected, at least matching the contribution from the Flagship Collaboration Fund.

Foundation Daw Park - 2009/2010 Research Grants Program |

Foundation Daw Park Board invites applications for its 2009/2010 Grants Program. For this round of grants the Board has allocated a total of $100,000 for medical research on the following bases: $85,000.00 for Repatriation General Hospital -based research projects and $15,000.00 for applications from South Australian researchers (including those based at Repatriation General Hospital) for a project specifically focussed on Defence and Veteran Health and well-being.

Non Medical Research Projects
The Foundation has this past year attracted external funding in excess of $35,000 for non-research projects at Repatriation General Hospital, ie; 3 x bariatric beds; patient wallets; computer equipment for patient therapy (OT). This was in addition to the $20,000 which formed part of the 2008/2009 Grants Program.
For 2009/2010 the Foundation will continue to seek funding for projects through external funding organisations and will be seeking applications on this basis shortly.

The Cancer & Bowel Research Trust - Research Grants |

The Cancer & Bowel Research Trust objectives are to provide funding to scientific and medical research into the causes, cure and prevention of cancer related illness for all
Australians, along with increasing community awareness of preventative measures into the causes of bowel cancer. Grants are offered each year to support research over a period of 1-3 years.
Grant assistance is intended to support work for which the applicants already have some or will have some support within
their respective institutions. Qualified researchers who will be conducting the research at a host institution in Australia. The institution can be within a University, affiliated to a University
or major hospital, or an appropriate independent medical or scientific research institute. Up to a maximum of $40,000 per year can be awarded.

NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) - Call for Applications |

The NHMRC have recently introduced the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) Scheme which replaces the Centres for Clinical Research Excellence Scheme and the Capacity Building Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research.
The CRE Scheme seeks applications from teams of researchers to pursue innovative, high quality collaborative research activities in the following priority areas:
- Clinical Research
- Research into Asbestos Related Diseases
- Population Health Research
- Electromagnetic Energy Research
- Health Services Research
The CRE will build capacity, support research that will lead to improved community health outcomes, and ensure effective translation of research outcomes primarily into practice. Funding will be awarded for a period of five years and is expected to commence in 2010. Applications opened on 10 July 2009. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF): The Australian Pest Animal Management Program (APAMP) - Expression of Interest |

The Australian Pest Animal Management Program (APAMP) is funded under the Australian Government's Caring for our Country initiative. The 2009-10 funding round of APAMP is now open. Applications for projects to develop and promote improved pest animal monitoring and control approaches are invited from local and state government agencies, incorporated community groups and research organisations. Proposals for projects of 1-3 years duration are invited; however funding beyond the first year will be subject to availability of Program funds. Proposals to extend the objectives of existing APAMP projects will be considered.
Grants of $10,000 to $100,000 a year over a 1-3 year period are available for individual projects and there is an expectation of significant in-kind and/or direct
support from applicants and third parties.

Sugar Research & Development Corporation (SRDC) - Capacity Building Projects |

Capacity Building Projects (CBP) are an initiative aimed at helping sugar industry people and organisations to build their capacity for leadership, learning and/or change by conducting a learning activity, or through travel. Activities might include conducting a seminar or workshop in your local area and inviting guest presenters from other regions, other industries or the R&D community. Some activities might lay the groundwork for a later application for a research project. Travel might be to attend a workshop or conference, or to visit another region or another industry.
Maximum SRDC funding is $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for groups. Activities planned as part of these proposals should be undertaken in calendar year 2009.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) announces the launch of the Rapid Response Innovation Awards, a one-of-a-kind rolling application program to
support novel Parkinson's disease related research in real-time. The goal of this exciting new program is to rapidly support innovative research focused on the cause of and cure for
Parkinson's disease (PD).
MJFF is eager to fund high-risk, high-reward projects tackling critical scientific roadblocks that if successful, can open new avenues for PD
therapy development. With the understanding that submission and review of innovative, high-risk, high-reward proposals should not be limited to one deadline each year, the Rapid
Response Innovation Awards will operate on a rolling basis. Research proposals may be submitted at any time during the year and funding decisions will be made within six weeks of
receiving the application. Rapid Response Innovation Awards are designed to support projects with little to no existing preliminary data, but that have the potential to significantly impact
our understanding or treatment of Parkinson's disease. Program Highlights:

US Department of Defense - Bone Marrow Failure Research Funding Opportunities (Pre - Applications) |

Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) congressional appropriations have provided $5 million to the Department of Defense (DOD) Peer Reviewed Bone Marrow Failure Research Program (BMFRP). The program will support innovative research focused Bone Marrow Failure (BMF).
The FY09 BMFRP is pleased to announce the release of the second and third of three award mechanisms, the Idea Awards and the Synergistic Idea Awards.
1. Idea Awards: support innovative ideas and high-impact approaches to bone marrow failure research to move toward the BMFRP vision of understanding and curing bone marrow failure disease. This award mechanism is designed to support new ideas, not ideas that are extensions of existing work. Proposals should have a high probability of revealing new avenues of investigation. Maximum period of performance is 3 years. Maximum allowable funding is $375,000 in direct costs for the entire period of performance or a lesser period of performance, plus indirect costs in accordance with the institution’s negotiated rate agreement.
2. Synergistic Idea Awards: support innovative ideas and synergistic approaches to bone marrow failure research through scientific collaborative partnerships. This award mechanism is designed to support new ideas, not ideas that are extensions of existing collaborative efforts. Collaborative partnerships must involve two Principle Investigators (PIs) who will use synergistic and complementary perspectives to address a central problem or question in bone marrow failure research. Proposals should have a high probability of revealing new avenues of investigation. Applications must clearly identify the synergy that will enable or greatly accelerate the evaluation of a single innovative hypothesis. Maximum period of performance is 3 years. Combined total maximum allowable funding is $750,000 in direct costs for the entire period of performance, plus indirect costs in accordance with the institution’s negotiated rate agreement.

The Mizutani Foundation invites grant applications for basic studies in the field of Glycoscience. The applications will be reviewed by the selection committee, consisting of specialists
appointed by the Foundation, based on

The Australian Academy of Science invites expressions of interest from junior scientists who are no more than 30 years of age to visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States of America. Proposals in any health-related field of natural science will be considered.

The A-T Children's Project - Research Grant Program |

The A-T Children's Project strives to assist respected scientists in developing a clearer understanding of ataxia-telangiectasia. The Project provides competitive grant awards for basic and translational research grants related to A-T.
