The Federal Government’s budget announced that up to 50 ARC Super Science 2010 Fellowships are intended to be offered in three areas:
1. Space science and astronomy;
2. Marine and climate science; and
3. Future industries research – biotechnology and nanotechnology.
Whilst there are no firm dates available at present, interested applicants are requested to complete and return a Notification of Intent to Research Branch at arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au by 4 September 2009.

SA Premier’s Science & Research Fund (PSRF) – Round 7 |

The SA Stage Government Premier’s Science & Research Fund (PSRF) was established to facilitate investment in key science and research initiatives that have a demonstrable potential to generate significant strategic and sustainable economic, social and/or environmental benefits for the State.
In Round 7, applications addressing SA strategic research areas (refer SASP, STI10, Constellation SA), with a focus on Adaptation to Climate Change will be particularly welcomed. As in previous years, the PSRF will also consider requests for support for ARC Laureate Fellowship applications.
The PSRF application process involves two stages.
• Stage 1: comprises a 3-page 'Expression of Interest' and these are due by Monday 31st August 2008 in Research Branch, together with a fully signed internal contribution certification page
• Stage 2: successful Stage 1 applicants will be invited to submit a more detailed Stage 2 application and project case by Friday 3 October 2008.

Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) - DBL Development Fund & Roche Research Grant |

1. DBL Development Fund: The purpose of the DBL Development Fund is to improve, through research and demonstration, the techniques, practice, administration, planning, delivery and evaluation of hospital pharmacy services in Australia. Applicants are required to have 12 months current membership with SHPA, or, in the case of student members, three months current membership at the closing date for award applications.
In 2009 the DBL Development Fund will provide up to $33,500 to assist SHPA members undertake:

research projects
•
development activities such as attendance at conferences, seminars, study tours.
2. Roche Research Grant on ‘Quality and Safety’: This grant valued at $10,000 is designed to enable a project to be undertaken in the areas of quality and safety in medicines use. Suitable projects would demonstrate the impact of hospital pharmacy on medicines management in terms of quality, safety, and, where relevant, the economic benefit.
The grant is available to members of SHPA with 12 months current membership and student members with three months membership.

Cancer Council SA - Seeding Grants for Data Manager Support |

A number of Cancer Council seeding grants of up to $35,000 will be made available for data manager support for clinical cancer databases in SA, commencing in 2009. The purpose is to strengthen the availability and capacity of clinical cancer databases in SA for research and service monitoring.
This grants program is part of a broader cancer data infrastructure initiative in SA jointly funded by SA Health and Cancer Council SA relating to the SA Cancer Registry, hospital cancer registries and like data collections, bio-specimen data systems, and data linkage through the SA Cancer Data Grid.

NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) - Call for Applications |

The NHMRC have recently introduced the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) Scheme which replaces the Centres for Clinical Research Excellence Scheme and the Capacity Building Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research.
The CRE Scheme seeks applications from teams of researchers to pursue innovative, high quality collaborative research activities in the following priority areas:
- Clinical Research
- Research into Asbestos Related Diseases
- Population Health Research
- Electromagnetic Energy Research
- Health Services Research
The CRE will build capacity, support research that will lead to improved community health outcomes, and ensure effective translation of research outcomes primarily into practice. Funding will be awarded for a period of five years and is expected to commence in 2010. Applications opened on 10 July 2009. Australian Development Research Awards 2009 Funding Round |

As a part of AusAID’s Development Research Strategy, which aims to increase the role of research in contributing to the effectiveness of the aid program, a competitive funding round has been established. AusAID is currently advertising the 2009 Funding Round for the Australian Development Research Awards.
The aim of the Australian Development Research Awards (ADRA) is to attract high quality research that informs policy development and increases the general stock of knowledge around development issues.
The 2009 ADRA Funding Round is open to all Australian and international not-for-profit institutions or organisations where research is a core component of the organisation’s mandate. Proposals should address pertinent and cutting edge questions in development research in the following areas of high priority:
- Disability-inclusive development
- Economics
- Gender
- Performance-linked aid
Applicants can apply for funding for projects up to three years in duration, with successful proposals eligible to receive between A$100,000 and A$300,000 per year.

Association for International Cancer Research (AICR) - Research Grants |

AICR awards grants to support fundamental or translational research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. AICR do not support clinical research. AICR will consider applications that include some clinical research in a project which is mostly basic or translational. However, completely clinical applications, such as intervention studies, clinical trials or health care delivery research are beyond the remit of AICR. Before submitting applications that include clinical research, potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact AICR for advice.
AICR accepts applications from non-profit research institutions anywhere in the world. Projects are for a maximum of three years and can include funding for research staff (post doctoral and/or PhD students), consumables, essential items of equipment and travel.

The Stanley Medical Research Institute (SMRI) - Regular Treatment Trials

The largest program at SMRI is for the identification of medications that will improve the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The purpose of this program is to support the testing of medications to assess their efficacy for treating schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. SMRI is especially interested in supporting the testing of medications that are unlikely to be tested by pharmaceutical companies because they are not commercially profitable.
Regular treatment trials can be funded for up to $300,000 per year. Applications will be accepted from researchers in any country except where prohibited by United States law. The skills and academic experience of the applicant will be considered, but no particular academic degree is required.

United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues - Trust Fund for the Second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

The 2010 Call for applications for the Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues relating to the Second International Decade of the World's Indigenous People is open.
The Fund will give priority to projects concerning the main areas of the Second Decade: culture, education, health, human Rights, the environment and social and economic development. Indigenous organizations or organizations working for indigenous peoples can apply for small grants from the Trust Fund. Guidelines to applicants for the Fund are available below.
It is expected that the Fund will mainly be used for small grants projects with a budget for up to 10,000 US$ covering one year’s expenses.

The Heart Foundation offers Summer Scholarships to give undergraduates an opportunity to participate in biomedical, clinical or public health research projects which are broadly related to cardiovascular function and disease.
Summer Scholarships are offered to assist undergraduates who have completed at least two years of a relevant undergraduate degree to obtain research experience. Summer Scholarships are offered for a duration of up to 6-8 weeks.

National Library of Australia Summer Scholarships |

The summer scholarships were established to support younger scholars undertaking any research which can be supported by the Library’s collections. Preference for Norman McCann Scholarships will be given to those working in the disciplines of history, literature, librarianship, archives administration or museum studies. Preference for Seymour Scholarships will be for those undertaking biographical research.
The scholarships are tenable for a period of six weeks commencing on the first working day of January each year.
The scholarships are open to tertiary students who have commenced postgraduate study and are under the age of thirty at 31 December in the year of their application. Applicants must be Australian citizens or have permanent residence. Preference will be given to applicants who would otherwise find it difficult to use the Library’s collections for reasons such as geographic distance from Canberra.

The A-T Children's Project - Research Grant Program |

The A-T Children's Project strives to assist respected scientists in developing a clearer understanding of ataxia-telangiectasia. The Project provides competitive grant awards for basic and translational research grants related to A-T. One- and two-year projects are funded up to a maximum total direct cost of US$75,000 per year.
Please note that the A-T Children's Project is currently focusing its funding efforts on grant proposals that are relevant to a therapeutic intervention for A-T and/or proposals that facilitate translational or clinical research for this disease
